Former Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland (pictured, right) is mourning the death of her mother, Doris Rowland Garrison (pictured, left), who suddenly went into cardiac arrest on December 1 and died just one day later in her hometown of Atlanta according to the Los Angeles Times.
Rowland had just recently given birth to her first child, Titan Jewel Witherspoon on November 4 and her mom was reportedly over the moon about her new grandson.
The 66-year-old grandmother who would have turned 67 on December 6, raised Rowland and her brother Orlando almost exclusively after her divorce in 1988. Doris then uprooted her family from Atlanta to Houston and was the supportive force behind Rowland’s singing ambition.
As Rowland’s star began to shine, Doris was a constant in her life, rooting alongside her as she made musical strides. Rowland has oftentimes publicly praised her mother for making sacrifices so that she could pursue her singing career. Rowland, an avid Instagram user, said in an October post last year, #AlwaysMamasbaby Loves my Momma!
A representative for Rowland issued a statement about her mother’s passing to the Los Angeles Times:
“It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing of my mother, Doris Rowland Garrison,” the statement said. “She was an incredible soul who made countless sacrifices so that I could become the woman — and now mother — I am today.”
Services for Doris will be held Saturday in Decatur, Ga.
