Michelle Marks, 23, was on the phone with her boyfriend Sam around 9:30 p.m. on Monday, when she suddenly screamed, “He’s got a gun!”
Marks had just left her job at Fornino pizzeria near Pier 6 at the Brooklyn Bridge Park when her 53-year-old ex-boyfriend approached and fatally shot her in the head, according to DNAinfo. Sources told DNAinfo he was taken into custody on Tuesday afternoon. At the time of reporting, he had not been formally charged.
“I want to talk to you,” the man said loud enough that Sam could hear him over the phone. Those were the last words he heard before a deafening silence. Sam quickly texted Marks’ mother, informing her of the tragic plea.
Marks was planning on filing a restraining order against her ex-boyfriend on Tuesday morning. She sadly was never afforded the chance. Her body was discovered in an empty lot at Joralemon Street and Atlantic Avenue, police said.
“She was friendly, loving, caring. She would do you a favor. She would speak her mind. She was feeling good about herself. She wanted to go to California,” said Marks’ mother, Pauline Marks.
Police report that Marks and her ex-boyfriend shared an abusive past. Marks made three domestic calls to police during their relationship, which began in 2013. She recently filed a complaint against him on May 16.
“She was breaking it off with him and he just didn’t like it,” Marks’ mother said.
This past Sunday, the ex-boyfriend assaulted Marks in the hallway of her home in Crown Heights. Luckily, her mother arrived in time to rescue her child. Her mother said the man had a “vacant” look in his eyes and seemed disturbed.
They fled the apartment and called police to arrange another complaint.
“He’s going to pay for what he did. I hope he’s going to reap what he sows. He’s not going to get away with it,” Marks said.
