The Sundance breakout film The Birth of A Nation just released a new riveting poster that has everyone talking.

Debuting on Tidal, the one-sheet depicts Nate Parker, the movie’s director and star, with an American flag noose across his neck. On Parker’s Instagram page, he posted the image with the following caption, “#Healing can only come through an honest confrontation with our past. Do we have courage to examine the true Birth of this Nation?”

Powerful, especially in these hard times. And of course, Black Twitter was here for the gut punching imagery.

The upcoming film — which won two awards at Sundance and was sold for $17.5 million to Fox Searchlight — also stars Gabrielle Union, Aja Naomi King, Armie Hammer, and Jackie Earle Haley. The story focuses on Nat Turner, a literate slave and preacher, who devises an uprising to lead his people to freedom.

The Birth of a Nation debuts in theaters nationwide on October 7 and is expected to be the film to beat this upcoming awards season.
