Sevyn Streeter‘s peaceful protest was blocked before a performance Wednesday at the Philadelphia 76ers game against the Oklahoma City Thunder in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Just before she was scheduled to sing the National Anthem, the “Won’t Stop” singer tweeted a video saying she was told by team management she would not be allowed to perform while wearing her “We Matter” jersey.
Sevyn reportedly refused to change into several outfits provided by the team.
Sevyn is not the first anthem singer to protest the current mistreatment of Black Americans. Miami Heat anthem singer Denasia Lawrence took a knee while singing last week. Commenters on social media didn’t hesitate to weigh in on the controversy.
