Black people in the U.S. reported doing worse economically in 2025 than at any time since the Federal Reserve began publishing its Economic Well-Being of U.S. Households report in 2013.

The Black unemployment rate has been seen by many financial analysts as a bellwether for where the economy as a whole could be headed. 

Outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas estimates there could be 1 million layoffs by the end of 2025, a number usually seen in a recession.
