A federal grand jury in Tampa has indicted a former Florida sheriff's deputy on charges of violating the civil rights of an unarmed Black man, who was brutally beaten after surrendering to the officers following a brief chase last year, reports Reuters.

Monday night's event highlighted historic speeches by civil rights heroes like MLK, Malcolm X, Fred Hampton, Sojourner Truth, and Shirley Chisholm, recited by Lin Miranda-Manuel, Andre Holland, Michael B. Jordan, Octavia Spencer, and civil rights icon Harry Belafonte.

Ahead of the Martin Luther King holiday, military officials this week yanked an offensive flyer that featured an image of the slain civil rights leader on an advertisement for a "fun shoot" at a Georgia Air Force base, reports the AJC.

Frances Hooks, the civil rights leader and widow of Benjamin Hooks, died Thursday.

Lewis, who tweeted he was "grateful" for the honor, reportedly cried when he was informed of the idea months ago.
