A church on the city’s South Side was readied Monday for a private funeral service for the slain mother, brother and nephew of singer-actress Jennifer Hudson, a day after a public memorial that drew hundreds of friends, family and fans.

The convicted felon suspected in the slayings of actress-singer Jennifer Hudson’s mother, brother and nephew told police he is innocent but balked at taking a lie-detector test, a police official said.

As a native of Chicago, my prayers and heart go out to Jennifer Hudson and her family. However, my sympathy and concerns are not reserved for the Hudson family alone. They stretch long and wide, covering the hundreds of victims and victims’ families whose murders go unsolved and remain out of the national spotlight.
