On Monday, Virginia asked the Supreme Court to overturn a ruling by the state Supreme Court that ruled its redistricting effort was illegal.

The new map would divide Shelby County, Tennessee’s lone majority-Black district that includes the city of Memphis, into three separate districts.

The move comes as the Florida state legislature advanced a new congressional map that could potentially give the GOP four new House seats.

Should Virginia’s redistricting effort hold up in court, Democrats will hold the advantage in the House race during the upcoming midterm elections.

Despite having the support of Gov. Wes Moore and the state House, the Maryland Senate never brought the redistricting effort to a vote

The map will be submitted to the Grand Assembly, where the Democratic majority are divided on pursuing a mid-decade redistricting effort.

Virginia’s redistricting effort is somewhat of a Hail Mary, considering it has to pass twice through the Grand Assembly and be put to a public vote.
