Alabama– Two shots were fired in a courtroom in Goodwater, Alabama, and a man was removed on a stretcher, local media reported on Thursday.

GOODWATER, Ala. (AP) — Police in central Alabama say an officer shot and wounded a man who attacked a judge and tried to grab a gun from a spectator in a municipal courtroom.

State police trooper Chad Joiner says the wounded man was in court in Goodwater on a domestic violence charge. He was taken by helicopter to a Birmingham hospital, but there was no immediate word on his condition. The officer who shot him was providing security in the courtroom.

Frank Teel, a lawyer in nearby Rockford, said the shooting happened during court at Goodwater City Hall. His brother, attorney Carlton Teel, is a county district judge and was in the building at the time. The judge’s aide suffered powder burns.

GOODWATER, Ala. (AP) — One person was hurt Thursday in a shooting at a municipal court in Alabama, authorities said.

No one was killed, according to Coosa County Coroner Alan Wingfield, who said the wounded person was rushed to a hospital. There was no immediate word on his or her condition.

Frank Teel, a lawyer in nearby Rockford, said the shooting happened during municipal court, although it’s unclear whether cases were being heard at the time. His brother, attorney Carlton Teel, serves as the city judge and was in the building.

“I’ve not talked to him, but I’m told he was OK,” Frank Teel said. “It’s my understanding no one was hit, but his office manager had powder burns.”

Dennis Connell, who works at a grocery store in the town, said emergency vehicles swarmed around City Hall, where the city courtroom is located on the second floor. One person told WSFA-TV that two shots were heard.

The town of 1,500 is about 60 miles north of Montgomery.
