Cashing in at $19.1 million and placing second behind “Underworld 4,” the George Lucus film about the bravery of the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II exceeded expectations and is well-positioned to break even in the coming months.

Lucas has been very open about the hurdles he has had to overcome to bring the film to the big screen:

Lucas spent 20 years pursuing the project, and recently revealed he couldn’t get any studio to finance the film because of an all-black cast. He finally decided to put up the money himself, and spent $58 million on the production budget and another $35 in distribution costs.

Now that the film has had a strong opening weekend, do you feel it will boost the mainstream public’s confidence in all-black casts?
