Carmen Elena Chavez, 19, lost control of her vehicle on a Los Angeles street and plowed into two homeless people sleeping on the sidewalk, killing them almost instantly, reports KTLA.

Drinking played a factor in the crash, but the driver’s blood-alcohol level was not released.

According to police, Chavez was traveling at a dangerous speed around midnight, when she attempted to make a right turn and jumped the curb, smashing into the two people. They were dragged about 50 feet and had to be extricated by the Jaws of Life by firefighters.

Five people were in the vehicle. According to a witness, Chavez attempted to leave the scene and had to be stopped by witnesses who told her, “Oh no, you’re not going to leave, there’s someone under the car.”

Chavez has been arrested on vehicular manslaughter charges, and bail has been set at $100,000.

This crash comes one day after Natina Reed, of the ’90’s group Blaque,” was killed after being struck by a vehicle in Atlanta, Georgia. As previously reported by NewsOne, it was initially reported that it was a hit-and-run, but further details revealed in a press release by police show that the driver stopped and called 911.

No charges were filed in that case.
