Legendary rock star David Bowie has died at the age of 69 after a battle with cancer.

The news was released via a statement posted on his social media accounts that read, “David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.”

The news was also confirmed by his son Duncan Jones on Twitter, who said he will be taking a break from social media.

The rock star was known for reinventing the sound of the ’70s and ’80s, and was married to supermodel, Iman. Several notable figures have taken to social media to mourn the loss of the singer, songwriter and musician.

Just like that blue bird…

R.I.P David Bowie 💔 The Goblin King! Amidst the many maniacal makings of my musical flare, the "Ashes to Ashes" video has beautifully haunted me since the day I saw it! So funky, so rock & roll, so poetic, so creepily vivid! Labyrinth might be the most quoted film in the family on the low! "Jump magic, jump!" I recently gave my cousin @natcrawf31 a Labyrinth T Shirt a fan gave me because I knew how much she would appreciate it! Check timelines! Can't make it up! I met him in brief and thanked him in the most star stricken way ever but I got it off my nervous chest! "THANKS!" That thank you was for every member of my family and the new generation that watch that movie and sing the songs like they were released yesterday and love them just as we always will!!! Suffragette City!!! Under Pressure!!! Let's Dance!!! 💔 with love…
