A Black man was fatally shot five times in the back by officers from the Los Angeles Police Department while running away with his hands raised, according to several eyewitnesses, CBS News reports. Family identified the man as 18-year-old Carnell Snell Jr.

Police say they pulled over a car in south Los Angeles with paper plates, suspicious it was stolen, according to Sgt. Barry Montgomery. CBS News writes that Snell exited the vehicle and police pursued him on foot. The driver continued in the car and is currently still on the loose, police say.

LAPD officials report that a handgun was recovered at the scene, but have not released any details. Police also have not publicly identified Snell as the shooting victim.

Witnesses say Snell was running with his arms up, yelling to police that he was unarmed. Snell was shot on the same street where he lived on, according to family members who spoke with CBS.

Snell’s 17-year-old sister Trenell says she was outside with friends when she saw her brother running toward her. She immediately hit the floor when she heard shots ring out. When she stood, she saw her brother handcuffed, lying in the street.

Monique Morgan told authorities Snell was her son, CBS reports. “Please let me see my baby. If that’s my baby, please let me see him,” Morgan pleaded with police after arriving to the scene.

CBS News reports several protesters gathered near the crime scene demanding answers and waving “Black Lives Matter” flags. Demonstrators also gathered at Mayor Eric Garcetti’s residence, where his car and vehicle were egged. On Sunday, protests continued near the crime scene.

Snell’s shooting death was just one day after a mentally ill Pasadena man named Reginald Thomas, 36, was fatally shot by police.
