Not surprising that funds were not available for this project. I certainly hope that we support this film. Let Hollywood know that we want to see movies about us. Accurate movies. Last time I checked, Hollywood wsa run by the elite Left. Obama has made several trips out to LA to do major fundraising. Yet, those same execs can’t fund a Black movie that doesn’t show some sports star, rapper, or a comic sidekick to the white action hero. Has anyone seen the preview for this film? It looks dreadful, not to mention incredibly historically inaccurate. The 332nd Fighter Group had one of the lowest kill/loss ratios in the entire European theater (110 confirmed kills to 150 confirmed losses), whereas the 56th Fighter Group racked up an astounding 700 kills and 128 losses. Hell, the German “Ace of Aces”, Erich Hartmann, was credited with 352 kills BY HIMSELF over the course of 2.5 years. Either one of those stories would be far more interesting to the majority of Americans than this heavily fictionalized account of the Red Tails.

Also, what the hell was Lucas thinking with cartoonish lines like “How you like that mister Hitler!”? I can guarantee that those words were never spoken in the c**kpit of a P-51, and that idiotic football chant is pure fantasy; these men were preparing for their deaths in the moments before the next sortie, not pumping themselves up to win the SuperBowl.

So, between the quality of the film’s writing, Luca’s uncanny ability to turn anything he touches to s**t, and the fact that it features an all black cast (an extremely unprofitable venture for most major studio films), Red Tails will probably be the biggest flop of 2012.

I hope it has success. Maybe they will cast black people in something besides reality shows and Tyler Perry movies. But roots didn’t open alot of doors so I am not wholing my breath.

There have been scores upon scores of movies made about various aspects of the American Military, Air Force, Naval Forces, and the like. If you’re going to talk ratio, let’s talk about the number of War/Action/Military movies made, at the very least, with stories concerning the contributions of Black American troops across the span of our country’s history vs. the number of films completely bypassing such information. This brings A LOT of credence to what Eric Monte has been talking about for almost 40 years with Norman Lear. If you read about Monte, he does sound bitter. You’re not being honest if you are expecting to know what all Brothaz and Sistahs will do in response to this movie coming out. Black people have individual minds and are just as likely to create a surprise box office smash with this film as any of the films that were marketed to the general public, assumed to be a “guaranteed hit” but then flopped (there are plenty).

So that argument against a movie that might bring new light to the reality of Black contributions doesn’t quite cut it (my skepticism, however, is because of Lucas’ former fictional Jar Jar character laced with racist undertones that went unquestioned by George Lucas and those on his team with any authority to stop it).

One possibility is that a few Brothaz and Sistahs could go see the movie and if they like it, they
tell their friends and it gets a bigger and bigger audience because of word of mouth.

Actually that statement doesn’t hold up when you look at actual figures. Take a movie like “The Color Purple”, made on a modest budget of $15 million. It grossed $135 mil. That ain’t bad, yet where were all the books with similar themes and all the cash in movies that usually follow a successful movie. The Joy Luck Club was made for 10.5, and it tripled it’s cost coming in at around 40 mil at the box office. When you include Dvd and video sales these movies were pretty solid. Yet unlike even minor hits with white themed pictures not even the actors were able to turn a role in a successful film into long term work.

This is not the usual Hollywood story for “white” films the screenwriters, or the stars. It is not just about money. There is something else going on here.
