the wire harvard

From The Harvard Crimson

Harvard students will be able to watch the “The Wire” for class credit next year.

At a panel last night, stars of the HBO hit series joined Harvard professors in discussing the applications of the show—which depicts the struggles of urban life in Baltimore—in understanding and combating real urban social issues.

“‘The Wire’ has done more to enhance our understanding of the systemic urban inequality that constrains the lives of the poor than any published study” Sociology Professor William J. Wilson said.

African American studies chair Professor Evelyn B. Higginbotham said that there would be a new course in which Wilson will use “The Wire” as a case study for poverty in America.

“I’m going to do whatever I need to do to get into that class. I’m excited,” said Martin A. Kessler ’13.

Attendee Sarah V. Chace ’80, who is also a fan of the show, said she already uses “The Wire” as a case study in a class on community leadership she teaches at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven. She said she came to the event to hear more about how other academics and the actors view the role of “The Wire” in depicting urban life.

I love The Wire… what does this have to do with anything

there’s a difference between having a class on something and using something as a case study in a class. they’re not having a class on the wire. they’re using the wire as a case study in a class. the whole class won’t be about the wire. smh

I suppose this would be fine but like another person commented and said, what does the wire have to do with school. Maybe some of them people who attend Harvard need to learn street smarts. They are book smart but dumb as a lug when it comes to the streets. They walk around campus simply thinking that they are so shielded. Wake up people. Crime, drugs, abuse etc is all around you. The problem can be sitting right next to you. You could be the problem.
And while you’re teaching them the streets. Let me or my daughter who loves school, get a chance to learn what they learn at Harvard. Let my daughter come to school there and learn. Be reminded. I don’t have the money to send my daughter to any college but she still loves school and would probably jump at a chance to go there. She is now 23 yrs old.

But yes. By all means. Teach on.

In my opinion, this “class” will serve as some typical depiction of inner city life. The problem is, this class will only go to reinforce stereotypes or misconceptions about young Black males. This is why no matter what, we are always viewed as criminals and thugs. I don’t know for sure, but has Harvard ever had a class using the God Father or Scar Face as case study. They’re f**king movies!!!!!Harvard should do studies of real life causes to the effects we see in the inner city and society in general and stop wasting time with this BS!!!!

It should be taught in any school that has a reputable business class degree and or American History. It’s a true account for how an entire state can be defeated and drummed out of the livable class. It’s amazing, this is our capitol, so what’s that say about the rest of the nation? I simply loved this HBO series and there needs to be something else like it on TV now. There is also something to be said about legalizing drug distribution and the crime rate flex.

We already have this class at UC Davis…so it’s nothing new.

might I add that all a class like this does is perpetuate the social stereotypes about the “ghetto” or the inner city. So unless the professor is street smart I’d rather they didn’t teach this class.

UCLA teaching Tupac classes, Harvard teaching the wire…

Not sure if we should be flattered or mad… What purpose could the study of black culture of this magnitude hope to serve at a school that’s supposed to be so far above the fray?

I like the Wire. I’ve seen every episodes. The show does not properly depict all black culture. Every black person does not live like the ones on the Wire just like not all live like the Huxtables. We need more shows that depict how more Black People actually live.

If you think The Wire solely because it depicted blacks in a negative light, you weren’t paying attention. If you thought it was all about black folks selling dope and living hand to mouth, you missed out. The show focused on five major institutions and the role they played in a post-industrial city. The show depicted people of many races with a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. No group of people came out totally clean, which is a reflection of reality. It showed the humanity of those who struggle on the bottom rung, and showed a more sinister side of those we hold in high regard. So don’t pigeonhole the show into something that denigrates black folks, as that was just a part of the story. The show effectively paints everyone in an unflattering light, as all are complicit in the city’s troubles to some degree.

I think the show is worthy of study. As worthy as any other fictional work that gets studied in school. I’m not an expert in social science, so I don’t know how it stacks up against other works that could be studied. That’s where professors come into play. They are well schooled in the current body of knowledge of the subject and can put The Wire in perspective relative to the current body of knowledge. In that sense, I doubt it would be a class just about The Wire. There will likely be supporting research students have to do to provide some intellectual rigor. This kind of thing is not unprecedented. I took an advanced strategy course that used The Godfather to examine contrasting styles of competitive strategy. It took much more than watching the movie to learn the lesson.

The Wire is one of the best shows ever on TV. Its not just about drugs and gangs and crime, but those things are there (And in the second season its shown they are just as much a part of poor white life as with poor black life)

There are just as many black “good guys” in the show (The mayor, the police, the politicians, the kids etc) as there are black “bad guys”

The show is very well thought out but at the same time a thinking show, which made it boring for most people.

I actually dropped my HBO after they dogged the show by not putting it up for any awards and then dropping it after 5 seasons.

I am glad the show caught someones attention. The acting is great (As a large number of the cast have moved on to other shows and movies) the attention to actually shooting it in B-More and not on a Hollywood set, using a lot of local actors to make it more real.

It is finally getting the attention that it deserved.
