Brooklyn Arena

From MTV.com:

BROOKLYN, New York — It’s been seven years since Jay-Z announced he was bringing the New Jersey Nets back home to New York during his 2003 “Fade To Black Concert” at Madison Square Garden. On Thursday (March 11), Nets co-owner Hov, an assortment of New York politicians and executives from the Nets came to Brooklyn for a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the team’s future home, the Barclays Center.

The Brooklyn Steppers Marching Band led the way into the press conference, which took place at Brooklyn’s Atlantic Yards. Jay walked in with Beyoncé, standing out in a crowd that included the Reverend Al Sharpton, New York Governor David Paterson and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Plenty of jokes flew as each person came to the podium. Governor Paterson got serious when talking about people opposed to the arena being built in Brooklyn because of the disruption it would cause in the community. Paterson promised more than 16,000 union jobs and more than 5,500 “permanent jobs” for the people in Brooklyn. He also said he expected the new stadium to yield more than $1.5 billion for the city over the next few years. The embattled governor, a Brooklyn native, expressed his love for the Nets and said when they left New York for New Jersey it was “one of the worst days of my life — other than becoming governor.”

    That’s definitely what’s up! Get your grown man on! I’m proud of Jay-Z and have always felt he set positive examples for young men in general, not just African-American. That’s what you call swagger @ it’s fullest! Men of our culture (hip-hop no color intended) quick to rap and/or sing about cars, money, laying up w/ different women, alcohol, and bling. At a bare minimum, I have yet to witness someone say they want to provide jobs to people in their old neighborhoods and help others get a come up. You may not be able to hand out 5,500 permanent positions, but I’m sure you got enough “star power” and money to make a fantasy a reality for many down and out folks who you claim are your “people”.

    I’m very proud of Jay-Z.
    When I hear people saying he’s falling off, they’re wrong. He’s rising–higher than music, which was just a stepping stone to take off.

    Jay-Z got a good deal, no money down and part owner of an NBA team – possibly the worst of all time.

    Now the real deal, NYC is ending bus/subway passes for all school children thanks to the loss of money that this deal is ‘causing. We’re going back in time to separate but “equal” schooling thanks to the change.

    Thousands of jobs have been lost on the site and a family homeless shelter was shut down on the site in mid-winter to make way for these billionaires.

    Stadium was supposed to be designed by reknowned architect Frank Gehry and be built to high sustainability LEED standards – is it happening as promised to the community? NO and NO.

    A lot of people talk about things they know nothing about.

    By the way, the State used Eminent Domain to steal peoples land and give it to the developer – by definition this is not in the public interest. It’s a travesity.

    Read more about it from real leaders like Black Panther and City Councilman Charles Barron.

    @TheRealDimeo

    f**k whitey? that would be the school kids across NYC that are predominantly of color? that would be the Minority Owned Businesses that got kicked out of the 22 acre footprint for 16 skyscrapers that aren’t getting built, but are being leveled anyway while only the arena gets built? that would be the neighborhood between Biggie and Kweli? That would be in Shirley Chisolm’s historic Congressional District? In Councilwoman Tisch James’ NY City Council District? In Velmanette Montgomery’s NYS Senate District? In Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries NYS Assembly District? All of these leaders are Black fool – that’s their district, check the record, these are not the supporters of the project – the supporters would be the Jewish Borough President, Jewish Mayor and Jewish Developer.

    Come back when you have a clue what you’re talking about.
