Ntozake Shange’s 1975 play, For Colored Girls who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf, was coup of the year for Tyler Perry. Not only will he produce and direct the upcoming film version, the King of Coonery will also write the adaptation of what may be the most important work about black female identity ever. Ask any black woman, especially the artsy/moody/self-aware type, about For Colored Girls … and she will respond with a wistful look and fond memories.

I was Lady in Blue in a high-school production and have told more than one sorry dude, “insteada being sorry all the time, try being yourself,” quoting the Lady in Red (but playing it off like I came up with it on my own). This is classic material, and now we can expect the intentionally stripped-down aesthetic of Shange’s work to be replaced by style choices that only a closeted gay man could make. Even worse, Perry has announced that he’d like to cast the likes of Oprah, Halle Berry and Beyoncé to tackle the play’s issues, which include love, rape, abortion and relationships.

Beyoncé??? Please pass the Xanax.

How did we come to such a low point in black entertainment? Sadly, money always talks. Did you know that Tyler Perry’s films have grossed about $319 million in seven years, while Spike Lee’s have grossed $372 million in 23 years? When you account for the inclusion of rather mainstream flicks including “Inside Man” ($88 million) in Lee’s canon, Tyler Perry is really in black folks’ pockets at an alarming speed. We’re going to see his movies in droves, and I just cannot figure out why.

Women love feminine men… And the combination of such alter ego’s makes it even more appealing. Spike Lee has been the epitome of what black film makers should mold themselves after, so the comparison is quite sickening if u ask me, and this clown complains about getting bootlegged.

I don’t think Mr. Perry is hiding behind anything. What I think is that he has open a lot of doors for women who have lost hope and all sense of prayer. Look at it this way he is a man, a black man at that, and he’s basically giving you the recipe on how women and men can figure each other out. Simply put, there is nothing to figure out except use your brains and keep God first in everthing you do. Mr. Perry hits all the points of normal family behavior in his plays and movies. You want to know what the big difference is, its because IT’S A MAN TELLING THE STORY..HA..HA..HA.

Hey, when I watch him performing I’m just wondering does he apply that same concept to HIS! actual life, because if he does, hunny LOOK OUT!!, cause here come CaramelLuv4U.

I have never bootlegged a spike lee film… nor have I ever bought on… yet, I have all Tyler Perry’s film and I bought them all. and will continue to. Spike Lee is not the epitome of the black man in film… he sucks. Tyler Perry shows what he was raised around. He had a single black mom. or maybe he didn’t but that is what he portrays. We women lived through this and everybody got that kinda gramma and that kinda of unca joe or charles. and they know when they get to struggling they can go to gramma for advice if she aint got no money. I am now the Madea of the family. and yes they all carry guns…….

strange how a black man dresses up like an old black woman and acts a fool (like most black women do)and sistas support him %100 but when he tries to do something about them in a dramatic format or a realiazation about black female life sistas turn on him like they do black men in general.it just shows how the heads of most sistas are stuck up their azzes,i dont even like this sick shyt of a black man dressed like an old woman talkin shyt but if anybody can pull for colored girls off in a format that most will go see it would have to be him,or it or what ever the creepy azz niggah is supposed to be.

Well.. I am NOT religious, so I’m not feeling the ‘Spiritual’ part of this stuff (although I fail to see where Spirituality and a Gun-Toting Grandmother/Crazed Maniac can both co-exist in a Play/Film) but, I WILL say this – I think that Tyler Perry’s Plays/Movies are basically ALL THE SAME! They ALL portray at least one Bad guy (a physically/mentally/emotionally abusive Male character), a Woman who’s his ‘victim’, a Physically Fit Male character who comes to the rescue of the abused ‘victim’ woman, even after she has a hard time trusting him at first because of all the abuse. And there’s always the slapstick characters like ‘Mr. Brown’ or ‘Madea’ to wreak comedic/violent havoc on the situation. I am very proud of the brother for what all he’s accomplished (especially considering his ‘unfortunate’ upbringing and being a fellow New Orleans native), but I just don’t quite understand why all the Hoopla over his Cookie Cutter Plays/Films with their endless entourage of interchangeable characters! I find his work entertaining, but repetitive nonetheless. I will also say this.. Among today’s issue-laden women, Tyler has definitely found the winning Lottery Ticket! ;-)

why is there a Perry vs. Lee thing all of a sudden. I wish there were a thousand black directors studios and actors making whatever they wanted whenever they wanted. Im still wondering why all the fantasy movies are about little white kids imagining things, like little black kids dont imagine anything or have the capacity to be in a fantasy. If you hate on Spike or Tyler for any reason other then their work and what you didnt like that they did…..PLEAAAAAAAASE go play in the street during rush hour, jump off a building or just go live in a cave…. he makes good movies point blank. his movies reflect every day events of crude reality. Every movie that he has produced so far has been top in the movies. If you think his movies are repetitive then what about flava of love or i love new york episode 1 – 2000. Who knows he might remake this work into a movie and it may actually be good ! Im sure he is fully aware about the moves he is making.

Sounds like hating to me and those are words i don’t use. to the person who wrote the article it sounds like you just don’t like tyler perry so you should of let someone else write it due to your lack of impartiality and how i could tell it’s personal is your reference to his sexuality and him being in black folks pocket which has nothing to do with the topic. Give black people enough credit to know what they do and don’t like if they can go promote a gangsta movie or spoof movies why not tyler perry who sometimes hit home with the issues some black families go thru while i love tyler perry films i also love spike lee movies i actually try to see all black movies. I believe I heard spike lee insulting his work here’s my problem with that he knows better than anyone else that we have enough critics against us without adding to our own he had his time to shine and could still do so there’s room he’s older than perry and can’t be compared perry is still growing give him that space to do so help him and if you don’t care for his work respectfully disagree but don’t put down the man’s work live and let live Spike and Perry both hit issues that black people go thru just in a different manner.

I’m not a big fan of TP I watched a few of his movies with a lady friend against my will and I was glad I did. I enjoyed them and found them very moving. I say to those who don’t get or don’t like his movies, maybe you lack the intellectual curiosity and maturity to understand the deeper message of hope, redemption and faith.

I refuse to watch anything Tyler Perry!!! When you are used to being feed swine you develope a taste for it, IE Tyler Perry movies. We will grow up, one day, it took over 400 years to make negroes hopefully it doesnt take as long to reverse the process, but it would only make sense. We just need more brothas and sisters to make movies so we will have more of a choice of films to watch.

Spike has made several very good movies. He is one if not the best director and writer in the business for those that dont know. Tyler Perry movies are clown shows with a twist of Jesus on the side!!

I am reading some of the comments on this page and do realize that there are alot of bitter, angry people on here. One Brother on here described Tyler as a CLOWN. Wow !!! I went to this Brothers’ personal page and he is promoting KRYME WORLD RECORDS. Crime ? That is the very image that has alot of our youths brains scrambled today. This is because we as a people don’t know how to seperate entertainment from the real. Tyler Perry is an entertainer at most, as are his stories are entertainment. Some of us are looking to deep, and cannot muster the entertainment value. Please, it is’nt that serious !!! Learn to LOVE, LAUGH, and PRAISE GOD . Look deeper into issue’s outside of the entertainment world. Though Tyler hits close to home with his material, we as a people might want to consider picking up some books and reading them, Politics, Social Studies, Self Awareness…etc. Maybe then, we can understand the social structure of Tyler’s work. Me, personally, I love his work. As for his wearing a dress on stage ? Think about Shakespeare, where the men played female parts all the time. Spike Lee has been my mentor for the past 24 years, very good on issues. One must admit that life in the South was and is far different than that of Bedstuye Brooklyn. If issue should be taken up with something such as the IN THE POCKET thing. How about these so-called preachers and people of God on your television screens, crying and begging for money in God’s name. Be mad at them for making a mockery of, “THE KINGDOM of GOD.” Tyler, is only a man at the end of the day. Even he acknowledges that. There is no glorification in being ignorant. Entertainment is just that, “ENTERTAINMENT.”

while some people say his movies are all the same, you as the veiwer have to take the time to look beyond the surface. take each film, find the relationships, the paralle concepts and motifs of the film and you will see that there is more to his story lines. Clearly the author of this article has something against Mr. Perry. I feel as though Tyler Perry has done what alot of us want to do but know we cant. He made his dream come true, plays, movies, tv shows, and now a talk show. He is a household name regardless of how u look at. me personally i dont really get into spike lee all that much, that is not to say that I dislike Lee’s work, because I think he has done some very compelling work over the yrs. but to compare the two is very uneven, because they both have a drastic different approach to portay the black community. we need to stop making this divide and just support the few african american representatives we have in the film industry.

I’m not mad at his hustle either. I do appreciate that he’s giving so many of our sisters jobs. However I wonder how this is going to turn out. I pray that he stays true to the play and works with some very talented screen writers who will do a good job with an on screen adaptation of this AWESOME and life altering play. I’m curious.

One problem i see so often in my color of people, is that some of us hate to see other blacks prosper, you can lay it on feminine men, or issue ladden women, but the bottom line is, some people live to condemn, one thing that slavery taught the black man was to hate himself, and anyone he feels might threaten his position as a man! Sometimes anger fills us up so tight, we forget to breathe! Everyone was put here for a purpose, we need to find that purpose maybe it will keep us occupied long enough to work on ourselves! There should never be an emphasis put on Spike Lee, and Tyler Perry, they both are greats at their crafts! Whether you like one or hate the other is not a debate, the only two things in this world that will never be defeated, is the devil and his imps because they never disagree, and Hate, it the only thing that drives some peoples hearts and minds! Why do black men hate strong black women, that’s like hating yourself, if it wasn’t for a black women you wouldn’t be here, unless you could birth yourself! Issue laden, tell your mama she’s issue laden, i want to be a fly on the wall LOL, to see how fast your head gets spun/slapped around! Just stop trying to be right all the time, find some peace in being wrong occasionally!

This gonna be my last post on this subject… As pointed out Tyler Perry has acc**ulated well over a quarter billion dollars for his film work. That being said, its time to move on from the “Madea” character.

Deuteronomy Chapter 22 verse 5: The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth to a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: For all that do so are an abomination unto the Lord thy God.

We all know that this is just “ACTING” but, out of the money that he has acc**ulated by this acting, how much of a distraction has this been to people who are weak in faith, and not only that imagine how many people have neglected priorities in life, such as going without a “need” to support him for simple entertainment. Wake Up

@ Rok that is so true my brother. Now don’t get me wrong Tyler Perry is a good guy he has brought jobs to the black community in Atl I just don’t like him promoting black older woman as crazy insane woman. Tyler makes his money off marketing and adding faith in his movies and plays it paints a good picture but the world sees it as blacks acting up and looking foolish woman are more prone to fellow Tyler Perry because that’s his core audience. But like I said he has done a lot for the black community. Black still don’t like a man acting like a woman that’s what Dave Chappelle was talking about and one out of many reasons why he stop doing his show.He is another example of making a lot of money on the way some blacks act and it hurt him in the end. Google and listen to some of his interviews.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/aledra14/ aledra14

jasonx34 once again we have people not talking with sense. first of perry has chosen to direct and give movies that show us in a different light then those of the opposite races to them we will always be the crackhead, struggle prostitute with four or five children and no father around to help, over the over extended black woman who hurts those around her to get to the top or hell in some movies just angry and bitter or not cast at all for the role period. what u dont understand about tyler perry films they eliberate on the feelings surround the unexplain actions and reaction of black people black woman in particular. why are we tired of this feeling why cant we get from up under the pain, and what can help out of it into a brighter day and love of ourselves. see instead of you truly getting the elements of the films and thinking about them instead you criticize and demean the positive light tyler perry projects us in as african american people. to me at the end of the day im just happy to see some of my faces on tv telling about different issues in my community instead people who will never look like or understand for that matter try and tell me about issues in my community jasonx34 get a f**king grip bro’.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/armandx99/ armandx99

Enough. Let’s be honest. Hollywood does not take a chance on developing a serious movie involving Black people, unless some stereotypes are implemented at our expense. There should be Black dramas that don’t involve dead beat dads, drug dealers, gangsters, prostitutes, pimps, and other undesirable elements. There should be shows that would be our equivalent of Cheers, Friends or Seinfeld, that was not comprised of four triffling w***es or a group of aimless losers getting drunk, high, or just not having a clue. Moreover, whatever is produced should limit the slang to a much lower degree. *NEWSFLASH* Just like we don’t all look alike, we don’t all talk alike either! Yes,it’s sad that Tyler Perry’s movies have come so close to the success of Spike Lee’s, despite the fact that Spike has spent so much more time and resources trying to equalize America’s view of us. By this I mean, Spike tried to branch out of just showing stereotypes, showing the lives and lifestyles of real people, which aren’t that different from the lives of whites. Still, even Spike continued to do just Tyler is doing now, giving a few glimpses here and there, while perpetuating just enough stereotypes to make sure the material is relatable and that we show out. The sad truth is, WE don’t show out to serious movies that cast us in a positive light. How many of us turned out to see Denzel in Malcolm X? If we want the stereotypes to end, we have to make it known to Hollywood and our Black television and film makers that we are hungry for real dramas and sitcoms, where you don’t necessarily have to be a doctor, lawyer, stock broker, or business owner to have a meaningful and successful life. It’s sad, but the closest thing we’ve had to that recently was a sitcom in the 90′s called Roc–about a Garbage man and his RN wife.

Depressing, is the word that comes to mind. I went to see this play and rememberd thinking “if this gets any more depressing i’m leaving. so i’m getting my hat right…
Someone please explain to me why do we perpetuate the same negative sterotypes as the white media does of black men in these playes. What a waste of a good oportunity, I mean It’s just more black on black crime , but we seem to be exclusively better at beating our own selves down than they ever could, just like “cops,Judge Whoever, Jerry springer, ect.
I’m waiting the story of our future, where we are looking over our own cities and towns, and maybe even some black faces on the money. IMAGINE!!

I am a product of the play “For Colored Girls… ” and remember sitting through the times and motifs of that particular era for our culture. I value the genius of Tyler Perry but would have to second think if the artist of this day Beyonce’ and others could identify with those of us who had become those colored girls… they came after us with their own struggle but no knowledge of those who struggled before them. But hey, I really don’t have a nickle in the quarter (I won’t make any money off of it either way) but those are my thoughts.

You know what? Whoever wrote this article is a prime example of the “crabs in a barrel” mentality plagueing us as a race. At no point can same blacks simply be happy that another has achieved something. Whatever vendetta you have against this man, is your business and you should keep it to yourself. If he’s hurt you in some personal way, be an adult and talk to him about it. The box office speaks for itself. You don’t have to like it, because as it appears, someone does! And guess what, those who don’t like him or his movies have options! Change the channel or guess what don’t see the movie. His character Madea is not about crossdressing and you idiots saying it is is where the white folks get it from. Oh and whoever quote the scripture, “Deuteronomy Chapter 22 verse 5: The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth to a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: For all that do so are an abomination unto the Lord thy God”. Tell that to the women you know who wear pants and shorts! yeah, i’m sure you won’t! Walk up and quote that same scripture. Let’s not be hypocrites right! You speak about it deferring the people who are “weak in faith” But isn’t every movie or play he’s done about redemption, and God being able to bring you though anything and everything you are going through? But, all you see is a man in a dress. Wow, if it concerns you that much, you need not be worried about his sexuality , but your own! The character is simply about a grandmother, and I’m not sure where you’re from, but I’m from Louisiana and my grandmothers “played no games”. Either of them! Not everybody’s grandmother is knitting and making cookies. My grandmothers were bold and brass and guess what, if you tried to hurt them or their families, you better be ready for what’s gonna go down. His movies reflect what is happening in our communities. You act as if he’s telling family secrets or something. Go to any urban area and you’ll see its truth. You complain about the comedies he makes, well why not let him do this drama. Did you write the book? If he’s been given the oportunity by the writer, then it’s no business of yours, just don’t see the movie if you hate him that much! Another idea, write your own play, make it a movie and then let’s see your attitude when other blacks, such as yourself, speak negatively about what you put your hard work into. Butthole!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/cestleon/ cestleon

Shay, I’d expect a “God fearing” woman to jump up and defend this obviously closeted gay man. After all y’all may have similar issues with your paramours……He didn’t kill off Madea, so obviously he likes the money (and perhaps, that hot assed suit) that is made of his transvestite minstrel show. I mean Flip Wilson had “Geraldine” but Geraldine stayed on his variety show and didn’t pop up here and there everytime Flip thought he had a chance to make her pop up. Not that I am critical of his (Perry) orientation I mean if he’s into guy’s then that’s his thing, but he DOES need to stop brainwashing these simple minded women out here by pimping the “god-spell” (gospel). And If he (Perry) were so “Holy” he wouldn’t be cross-dressing and making secular references to what is accepted as “black culture” all of the time. No, I am not a bible thumper. As a matter of fact, the fact that people like Perry have to resort to such tomfoolery to get people to pay attention to what is an archaic scripture is a true testament to the irrelevance of that doctrine in modern society. Hence the reason why I have evolved from that mindstate, (but thats MY choice as some people need mandates to control their life). I know I may have caused an ire in some but let’s face it 85% of the church goers are straight up sinners 6 days of the week! I’ll admit I’m not perfect, but at least I’m honestly at peace with it! It’s also a slap in the face to anyone who is of color (that seems to be his targeted demographic) that has an I.Q. of over 115. Now he wants to do something serious? Judging by the elementary content of his previous work and the slant against black men in it. This seems to be a little more than another “wannabe lifetime” flick that will dictate how black men “should and shouldn’t be” for the chickens to eat up like the corniness that constitutes most of his work! The only difference is that some of you have gave him so much that he can get “A-listers” now to draw some of you in like sheople to the slaughter! It’s a sad state that this guy has made so much off of black people for making us laugh at ourselves, yet blacks are progressing at a very slow rate. So what if we got Obama? It’s not like he grew up like a lot of “African Americans! And yes, there are too many negative stereotypes coming out of Hollyweird, it’s been like that since “blaxploitation”. Hence the reason why I support the bootleggers everytime I get. But I guarantee that more black people would flock to see the next “gangsta flick wif fiddy” than to see anything that has a plot or decent acting or dare I say it…..anything that requires some thought! If I lying then why has Perry made more off of clowning on a stage than Spike had made with full length features, yet he’s (Perry) only been doing this a fraction of the time? At this point I may have stepped on some toes, but who gives a damn? I’m as much as a hater as Bill Cosby and his comdemnation of the stupid s**te that black people excuse as being “part of the culture”. I’m also tired of people screaming hating when someone brings up the idiocy that is celebrated by blacks (some of these sorry excuses for rap videos, movies, sports figures, etc. etc.). Then again if my critique is hating, then I simply hate ignorance just as some people may hate the truth about themselves!

DONT DO IT! In Life we have our place: Tylers place is “modern day black exploitation, half-as-su.ck up to women- exploit stereo types-over act – coonery- closet homOS-x-ual based GOD thanking BS filmaker!

NO The scripture on garmets DOES NOT refer to Clothing adorning the body –
In Bible days all MEN & WOMEN wore robes’ there were no pants and skirts.
The passage refers to SE.Xuality – lesbianism of women and Gay males.

Tyler is simply acting when he adorns the clothing and character – but i dont hold that scripture against him as i dont think it applies here.

NO TYLER IS not as Talented as Spike Lee or Singleton, Ice Cube not even Van Peebles. Those Directors make a positive statement and teach a lesson – Tyler acts a dam-fool and white people LOVE IT!

WHITE POWERS that be – those who LOVE to see blacks stay low, stay uneducated, stay in the dark-stay dumb-stay unaware-stay fools-see themselves as coonery- and concern themselves NOT with serious world issues – they LOVE TP and will put their funds behind him to promote promote promote.

Today 2009: the best way to hold blacks back, and insure that Blacks are not prepared for the future is to finance TYLER PERRY MOVIES and promote him

    - So what if his films gross more, DRUG Sells are a multi billion dollar enterprise in black communities does that mean its GOOD? no!

Get a video camera, make anything reflecting Blacks as coons, shuck-n- jive, dance-focused, loud-boisterous-unconcerned with global issues or world crises, but do so covertly’ aka…dont make it too obvious – keep it suttle. Use 20% of your interview time -thanking God- whether you mean it or not- thank him, give praise to GOD when asked about your project- and you will build an empire just like TP.
Madea is NOT typical – when did you EVER see your Grandmother waving a pistil around? That is a very touchy subject to write about for Tyler Perry or whoever else would write a movie about. Prayer lots of it for Tyler Perry if he is going to write this movie “Colored Girls”. Who better to do it than him, Tyler Perry to me is a wonderful writer his movies like Madea go’s to Jail, I can do bad all by myself others he has opened my eyes. if anything he has opened up doors for black actors/actresses who need jobs.

We all need to Pray for Tyler Perry no other has opened up doors to this kind of movie making busness for black people like him. Spike lee has not done like this i can not name anyone in the entertainment busness who has.

    God bless, hefilms

The author of this article, along with most of these comments, are a prime example of “the crab barrel” method as Shay described.

Why does the Black American community remain so individualistic? Granted, I prefer Spike Lee & John Singleton over Perry…but there is room for more than 3 Black directors! And *newsflash* not every Black director needs to follow the same formula when making films. So why pit them against each other? This is madness.

You folks are coming off as bitter, spiteful, and plain ole’ hateful. I support Perry because he is giving older Black actors another chance to work, new Black actors a chance to shine, and defeating the concept that we can’t sell movie tickets. Look at “I can do bad by myself” last week. It pummeled Jennifer Aniston AND Megan Fox’s films. And it topped the box office in it’s opening week. Why aren’t you Blacks happy about such an achievement. I mean, even when I saw it there were a considerable amount of Whites in the audience. Showing that Perrys films DO have mainstream appeal (when most Hollywood execs swear that we don’t).

Geesh…Jesus Christ himself could come down from the Heavens to direct this film and you fools would still have something
bad to say. And sense this “journalist” knows all…why don’t you suggest who should make it, Bitter Betty!

And to kennyd4…Maybe sisters “support him 100%” because he is one of the few to actually have a Black female character in positive roles as main characters. Not to mention, finally show them in interracial relationships (a known taboo in Hollywood films). So maybe you are the a**hole being a fool :)

((At no point can same blacks simply be happy that another has achieved something. Whatever vendetta you have against this man, is your business and you should keep it to yourself.))

If he’s hurt you in some personal way, be an adult and talk to him about it. The box office speaks for itself. You don’t have to like it, because as it appears, ((someone)) does! And guess what, those who don’t like him or his movies have options! Change the channel or guess what don’t see the movie. His character Madea is not about crossdressing and you idiots saying it is is where the white folks get it from. (standing ovation here).

Oh and whoever quote the scripture, “Deuteronomy Chapter 22 verse 5: ((The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth to a man)) neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: For all that do so are an abomination unto the Lord thy God”. Tell that to the women you know who wear pants and shorts!

((let’s not forget–women didn’t show ANY PART of their FLESH–so dresses above the ankle and were against the law and so was not covering your hair!))

yeah, i’m sure you won’t!

My grandmothers were bold and bra** and guess what, if you tried to hurt them or their families, you better be ready for what’s gonna go down.

His movies reflect what is happening in our communities. You act as if he’s telling family secrets or something. Go to any urban area and you’ll see its truth.

You complain about the comedies he makes, well why not let him do this drama. Did you write the book? ((If he’s been given the opportunity by the write,r then it’s no business of yours, just don’t see the movie if you hate him that much!))

    ::::::::>>>And DRUM ROLL PLEASE!!!!<<<::::::::::::::::
Another idea, write your own play, make it a movie and then let’s see your attitude when other blacks, such as yourself, speak negatively about what you put your hard work into.” (end quote)

whites just love all foolish acting not just when they are Black, Dumb and Dumber, Howard Stern, Sienfeild, Dude Where’s my CAr beleve me the list goes on and on. But I look at Tyler’s plays as just poking fun at real life giving us a good laugh.. When i watched tv in the 70′s Bill Cosby, Sidney Poitier, Foxy Brown etc.. always played thieves, pimps prostitutes and just plain crimnals that the white man was always out to get. It would make me mad when the white man called them the N word on the movie. Plus our cartoons called the so called Black characters black sambos and had the ugliest looking characters.Blacks cannot get parts in 90% white films unless they are playing criminals. Tyler p. gives us good work and you complain. Just like a N— doing just what the white man wants go against your own. Uncle Tom (Now are you Oh of course not)Then stop acting like it

After studing the ILLUMINATI and there plan for a New World Order I find it ridiculous how blind and ignorant our nation of people has been. After Tupac gave his life to make the plot known to us people who are admitted members of the Baphomet are being rewarded by the people they brainwash. How in a world of so much access to knowledge can a man be a martyr to teach us and we still blindly support brainwashing causes. And to think, the majority of those who patronize Tyler Perry are actually church going alledgedly zealous Christians. Are we so blind or so hypocritical? Its a pity and ashame but this is the New World Order we are living in.

okay so I lied about not touching this subject again…lol

I tip my hat @ cestleon for using “higher intellect” to address the subject.

First of all, most people who are making comments dont read the subject, so your opinion dont count. Second if u not reading the subject, then I know u not reading the bible so, u only make yourself look the part of what u explain(stupid) Third don’t nobody “HATE” Tyler Perry he’s a good laugh, he’s seemingly intelligent, and he’s done alot for establishing “himself”

For all the Tyler defenders, okay he’s spread a good message about black women. What have u done to help spread this wonderful message that he’s inspired u with? Just as I thought… u laugh at keep doing your normal routine.

I clearly made my point in explaining my disposition, u are not even intelligent enough to know the difference in men and womens attire in the first place. Pants and shorts can be womens attire the same as men, even a dress or gown can be the same attire for men as well, and in both cases we know the difference between the two and we also know the “accessories” that goes along with the attire that he puts on and we know men dont carry purses, breast suits, lipstick etc… but u dont seem to have a universal perspective on what apparel actually is. so kick da dust

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/rene1953/ rene1953

Every movie he’s ever done was a hit. But the one thing they do is leave you thinking. There’s always a message in his movies. If he wants to tackle this one then let him do, but please don’t put Beyonce in it. She’s a good entertainer but she really can’t act.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/sekoo63/ sekoo63

It’s really stupid (I chose the word carefully) to suggest that Tyler Perry is bad for the black community. His movies, plays and television series have created thousands of high paying jobs for black people. And now that his television shows are in syndication; guranteed income for many, many actors for a long time.

His success in the entertainment industry has kicked down barriers that other black producer/directors were prevented from gaining access to for almost one hundred years!

We don’t have to agree about the content of his works BUT no one in their right mind can disagree about the economic impact he has had on the black community.

We (black people) throw trillions of dollars away on drugs, clothing, cars and alcohol that is produced by whites or Asians or folks from other countries and don’t blink let alone complain about who gets that money!

As soon as a brother starts making significant money, we want to question the “good” it does! That is the height of stupidity.

If you cannot support what he does at least have the decency not to critcize it. That is the worse kind of playa hate.

You probably mad because he wouldn’t let you be in one of his movies or he turned down some pap you tried to pass off as a script!

STOP THE HATE. REJOICE IN THE MAN’S SUCCESS.

You know what- I’m tired of the negativity within our own race about a creative brother giving his view of the world he grew up experiencing. All the negative people reading this or anything else- try reading up on the CRAB In The Barrel Effect! I’m sure you’ll find some way to disprove that as well- sad, really sad! If you don’t like something he’s doing to help all races cope with their situations in life, then how about changing the channel or produce your own views while fighting Hollywood in the process. Food for thought- a good man always told me that if you don’t have anything good to say, then try not saying anything at all! Peace

I will say this and I will definitely have to pray and try to get more balance temper wise because when I saw this topic and what they were saying I wanted to choke the writer. Tyler Perry is a man that has gone from rags to riches and have come up with real and inspiration plays and movies as black man. Blackplanet.com and other black people are hating so much on this dude. Tyler Perry is great for black people. We don’t have any truly good black leaders because once so black people get power they want to be the man but that position was never promised to them. If you look at what Tyler Perry has done and how far he has came from and the fact that all his plays and movies have Godly lessons and values in them. The man is blessed. Those that want to hate be careful of going against something God has made happened because if God is behind Tyler and I feel that he is, to go against him would be bad for you

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/aloreeng/ aloreeng

All I can do is shake my head!! I haven’t read any of the comments but I hate when I hear black people attack other black people. We really have to get past the self hate. Perry’s movies are not minstrel shows full of buffoonery and coonery! The reality is, whether we like it or not, there are “Madeas” out there. There are people struggling with addiction and abuse out there. There are plenty of people dealing with infidelity and low self esteem. That’s a fact! Perry’s movies also portray intelligent, professional black people and have positive spiritual messages. Spike had his day and during his time we supported his very militant messages. You can’t compare the money because we are talking about a totally different time. Movies were what…$6 back then? Let’s stop this criticism of each other and congratulate this young man for doing big things and making Hollywood take notice. Are we really going to remain crabs in a barrel our entire existence?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Sheltwon3/ Sheltwon3

I laughed at some of these comments because Tyler Perry shows a lot of different side and situations. Sometimes the truth will look like a stereotype. I wish it was different but people do fit a lot of those profiles. The issues is with the stigma of what those stereotypes say about black people. Sometimes the truth to a person who does not want to like you gives them excuses and reason but the thing is it should show the human and vunerable and weak side of you as a human being. You have a lot of shows on TV that only show positive sides of a race and even get you to love a criminal with a great personality played by a guy in Hollywood known for being a likable person. That is not real. That is fantasy but people fall for it. You can find a lot of stuff in Tyler Perry movies in the news and in newspaper and magazine articles. Also if you live in those areas, you can see it on a daily basic probably worst than what Perry could show. That whole cross-dressing thing is stupid. He is a playing a role based on a character he came up with. It is funny how people that are not right try to use the bible against you without actually being able to interpret what it is saying

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Shea_Bird32/ Shea_Bird32

Journalist are supposed write articles that are based on facts, and should be able to print the those facts without bias. Tyler Perry has made movies and plays and many of them have used to humor to soften the blow of what unfortunately is everyday life for many African Americans. I have every confidence in this man’s ability to produce a product of this magnitude without turning it into something shameful. If nothing else Tyler Perry has the talent to be able to put forth something that has played an important role in black culture and I know that he can and will do it with honor and integrity. You, on the other hand have seriously disappointed me. So many of our people have had opportunities to do something wonderful and have been cut down before having a chance to try. It’s sad that in 2009 some of our biggest adversaries are proving to be people of our own race. Give Mr. Perry a chance to show the world that his success is not limited to comedy, he’s already proven it to me.

Oh, that’s right…, there wasn’t one! 33 years and no one, man or woman has come forth to do a movie. Out of all the people who have graduated high school, college and film school since that time, nobody has come forward and now that someone has, we have nothing but negative words to say. Tyler Perry doing “For Colored Girls Only…” I say, what better Queen do you know?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Da_J_Rok/ Da_J_Rok

I’m glad that im alergic to shellfish… cause the coined slogan “Crabs In A Barrel” and “HATIN” is so overused.

The point in giving a “MESSAGE” to someone is not to disguise it but to “THOROUGHLY” explain. So to say he has such a wonderful message is lame, because it’s more humor based and off center dialect then anything. You people are not looking at the “Big Picture” u lookin at snapshots and the proof of that is how u cant seem to grasp the concept of what this whole subject is surrounding. Answer me one question… How can a man direct the thoughts of a woman? Who know’s a woman better then a woman, and the same rule applies to men. That being said, he can easily mislead the simple. The only Woman Director that I can think of off the top of my head is Debbie Allen. But if Debbie Allen was doing this, it wouldnt be a single post on this blog. Why u say? Because she hasn’t made a “TYPECAST” character to influence the masses. Tyler Perry has literally made u think that when we “CRITIQUE” something it’s “HATE” when its not. And it’s not his(Tyler) fault truly that u think this way, its yours and he is not responsible for fixing it… U ARE!!!

    I pitty the simple

In short, they talk about Tyler having the public fooled but putting Spike Lee on a pedelstal, basically comparing the two (which the only similariy is they are both black men who has made movies)the message is totally different. The author of these opinions have chips on their shoulders and need to get off Tyler’s back and let the brother walk!!
He is imperfect FIRST and if you sit back and try to find something to talk about negatively U WILL FIND IT! So get a life and keep your negative opinion to yourself & out of the media b/c he gets enough of that from people looking to tear the black race down & keep us all on the unemployment line. Don’t let yourself be used like that!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Truth3244/ Truth3244

The craps in a barrel analogy doesn’t apply here. Secondly, this isn’t a journalist piece – it’s a blog which means it’s an opinion. That being said, I do not think Tyler Perry should have his hands off For Colored Colored Girls. I think Tyler Perry’s earlier works were his personal best and the vast majority of everything since, especially his movies with the exception being Why Did I Get Married? (movie & play) have been a pale comparison and laughable (and not in the humorous sense – the patheic sense). @ Snakehips23 because a movie had not been produced doesn’t mean that it should be made into a movie just because. Some things shouldn’t be made into a movie because sometimes the core value of the piece is lost. Additionally, sometimes the integrity of the piece is sacrifice for the sake of boosting ticket sales – which would seem to be the case here with Perry enlisting big names oppose to big talent (Beyonce’s acting has improved but no where it needs to be to portray any of these characters & Oprah’s best acting was in The Color Purple).

The author was entirely ignorant and rude in implying Perry as a closet gay man. There is nothing wrong with being gay – as if that is some sort of handicap on a person’s ability to be creative.

SCIENCE Says it, DNA is specific to each person and your talent /skills are based in part on your DNA!

Yes, you’re right about 1 thing …IGNORACE*** @ its best! Next time pls read -properly – interpet correct and refrain from ignorant condeming uneducated juvenile lambasting of a man who simply expresses a personal opinion — which in effect means zilch, and will make no difference in TP’s life, for women like unto yourse

just in case you cant comprehend again…”like unto yourself” does NOT mean you personallly – it means OTHER Women who happen to be similar in some ways.

As much as I respect Tyler Perry for living his dream and bringing in big box office receipts for black cinema, I have to say I think most of his movies are terrible. I’m an avid movie watcher. I’ve watched everything from Citizen Kane to The Negotiator. I look for character development, theme, moral and plot as well as good acting, and action when appropriate. Perry’s movies are very predictable with grandiose and obvious archetype characterizations and stereotypes. I can never understand how his movies get theatrical releases when a regular movie with white characters with the same exact themes and characteristics would be relegated to cable tv at best. When I watch his movies in a theater, I feel like Im watching a movie on Lifetime or Hallmark. You shouldn’t have to watch his movies with a different eye because he’s black director. If a movie isn’t entertaining me, I will turn it off. I will say his last few films have gotten a little better.

I gotta admit when I was reading everyone’s opinion about this article, some negative, some positive….I was trying to think of an educated and some what whitty comment of my own to get everyone thinking about what they wrote in contrast with mine.
To make a long comment, not as long. You know what they say….”Opinions are like…”
The writer of this article placed the negative info into the article to get us all thinking and writing, its how they pull us in. They want to know that someone is reading their work. Good job…..”I guess.” But it did bring out the “Haters” and the fans. But with any celeb you either love them or hate them. In my opinion of TP, he surrounds himself with like-minded or at least positive thinking people. I’m sure he knows the seriousness of this play and he is listening to those who have high opinions of how it should be done.
To end my comment I have to say, the mere mention of Coonery is over the top. I mean why did we have to go that far. Then take one extra step and mention “Closet Gay.” Wow!!! I know the writer is only mentioning things that have been said about TP, but wow. Most that agreed were only a few inches from crucifying the brother. And here is the truth….those same ones hating will watch another one of his films just to find something else to hate. Enjoy your time watching.

Well Hitman, obviously u took notice to my comments because u decided to visit my page. I am not a “Tyler Hater” so bury that with Santa Claus. Just like u said the author of this post put a twist on things, Tyler does the same with his screenplays so thats irrelevant. Now compare the two, the writer of this post may generate 100-200 hits, Tyler Perry over $300 milli, that math is simple another one for ya boy. To conclude all this even though this is like my 7th or 8th conclusion, Tyler needs to take his fanbase and reprogram them to reality, its all fun and games to somebody get hurt. Everybody likes something different. Tyler Perry makes movies that are entertaining and have a positive message. You don’t have to watch them but please show the man some respect. He is not a coon and his sexuality is none of anybody’s business. I didn’t Like For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide but obviously you did. There are enough movies and plays out there for everybody to find something they like.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Poetic_Assasin/ Poetic_Assasin

I personally liked Erykah Badu’s take on “for colored girls,” which is the video to “bag lady.” That being said, while i applaud Tyler for not being negative, my problem with his brand of humor is that i always know what is going to happen in his movies after the first 15 minutes. His writing style is very simplistic. I can’t even bring myself to watch “house of pain” or any of his comedies, because I can’t laugh at a joke if i see the set-up for the punchline come nearly 5 minutes before it happens.
what i do like about Tyler Perry is that he will cast an array of black actors whom have never been given a shot to showcase their skills, or are really talented but may not have had work in white Hollywood in a while: Alfre woodard, Keshia Knight Pullium,Robin Givens…the list goes on. I give him his props for helping out his own people and for not letting the word “no” create his destiny.

Ok, whether u like the message in his movies or you go simply for the comedy, you shouldn’t think poorly of the man just because a character in his plays and movies causes him to crossdress. White people have been cross dressing in plays since the 40s and 50s in order to inspire humor in people. This is the same with Tyler Perry. Madea is a character made to inspire humor in people, he’s not dressing up as a woman and walking the streets once the stage is empty. And to call him gay for that is simply incredulous. Further more, I think we all put a little too much stake in the words of the Bible. It shouldn’t matter what the Bible says about anybody dressing as another sex. News flash everyone, the Bible isn’t PERFECT! Everyone is quoting the Bible as if it should have some type of revelance to this when it really shouldn’t. My argument is this, if man is imperfect and has faults, and man wrote the Bible then wouldn’t the Bible be imperfect and have faults as well? I’m not saying the good book doesn’t have good teachings and lesson inside it, but we shouldn’t quote the Bible as if it is a text by which every human must live by because it is simply not TRUE!!

People…Was it coonery when Martin Lawrence, Jamie Foxx dressed as women? No one was questioning their “sexuality” so why question Tyler Perry’s? My only concerns with Tyler’s work is how will he evolve from his present day formula of movies “message-bring it back to church-Madea”?

Are we ever content w/each other?
Where’s the proof this man is gay; someone pls provide proof!?

Even if he were, we still need someone to provide the messages this man is expressing.

I am tired of seeing men dressing in drags.

Tyler perry has a great intelligent mind and he has many great talents thats why he is able to do such great things and make so much a year no body is forcing anybody to go see his movies we go see the movies because we choose to and we enjoy them, and also if he is gay isn’t that really his business no one else, he has a great mind because of his talent and ability to make people think and realize the troubles that are out there his sexual preference is no body’s concern

I can only say from my point of view is that Spike Lee is jealous of Tyler Perry, yes the movies Tyler makes is for us to be able to identify and laugh at ourselves. We are living in a time when laughter is good for us. It is not coonery or bafoonery, it hits us right at home. I am so sick of bigotry cards being played rather by blacks or whites or any other race. We are all a part of the Human Race. When people stop looking at color and start looking at life styles then we will all get a chance to say what is what. I have met in my lifetime as being in Case Management for Section 8 and Low Income housing, there were people of all races needing help. There is no white way or black way of doing things. It is merely an economic way of doing things. Poor whites and blacks alike all live poorly and rich whites and blacks all live glamorously. So lets as human being quit with the black and white and look at the economic woes that hurt us all. We all need Health Care, Homes, Cars and it is not a black or white issue. So Spike Lee just learn to appreciate Perry’s work. I can think of some of your movies like Girl Six that had no meaning at all and a few others. Give the brother props where he deserves it. You are not the author of how Black Movies are portrayed. Another thing, Tyler built his own productions so he did not have to get help from anyone but GOD whom made us all. Learn to laugh and appreciate evetything is this world, because this stuff is only temporary. LIVE, LOVE AND LAUGH

Lets get at the truth I was born in 66 farther was not in my life mother lost me to the state for 1 year before My Grand parents spent a whole lot of cash in legal fees to get me back. I was in the second grade. My Grandparents had 14 kids 2 died This woman with only a 3rd grade education raised an army of us. Madea is her persona She lived by the whippings and she died by the whippings. That is the only way she knew she was hard on us but she was harder on the world to protect us. I read some of the so called brilliant minds on this post and you are to blind or ashamed to relate to the message or the people Tyler portrays in his works of art. We are so high and mighty that we can not laugh at an uncle, auntie, or ourselves.I am a retired Marine who works for the Government right now and see a lot of these types of people in the white faces who work with us. The back woods funny speaking type the ones who talk walk and sound just like us listen to our music in retro spec they are just trying to find themselves also.Who we are is part written in our DNA and part a product of our environment. The DNA part is harder to overcome the environment is the one we can all work on changing. Just because we live in the hood does not mean we can not escape it. Books, education open minds and hearts will set us free. Antoine Fischer story was a lot like mine own Mean foster Mother and brother beat my ass for little to no reason at all Talked s**t about my family and tried to destroy my hope. My Grandma was Madea before there was a Madea. Short lady with short hair wore a wig beat my ass when I deserved it but loved me and drove me to do better she willed me out of poverty as much as I willed myself. She taught me to treat all black women with a little kindness, understanding, compassion, and love. Without them there is no me. I will never put a woman on a pedestal because while you are busy looking up you miss out on all the beauty that is walking eye level with you. I love Spike and like Tyler but I get them both. We are a funny race the human race Every body can not be a gangsta we have to have some laughter, The best medicine. God created you, God keep you, and God loves you. Lets love ourselves and stop watching Maury.

I have to be honest with you, I think you’re kinda blowing it out of proportion. I mean, truth be told, Tyler Perry’s films reach a demographic that NEEDS to hear these kinds of things and they way he constructs the messages in each film DRAWS people’s attention. God graced him with the talent to get the message across in way Spike Lee hasn’t done nearly HALF as powerfully as Tyler Perry. He has been prospered because the stories speak to people, they’re not just entertainment, they’re a message and a reality check for people who are tired of watching pointless films that just entertain for two hours. They’re stories everyone can relate to. Try to focus on the message instead of the box office.
