cleveland lebron james mural

CLEVELAND – LeBron James is being dropped off a building.

And his jerseys, at least the ones not on fire, are almost being given away.

Workers began dismantling the 10-story-tall iconic image of James on a mural in downtown Cleveland on Saturday. The billboard has dominated the city’s skyline for years but is being removed after the superstar announced he was leaving the Cavaliers for the Miami Heat.

As strips of the image of James, his arms outstretched and head thrown back after doing his pregame powder toss, began coming off, pedestrians stopped on Ontario Street to take photos and cars pulled to the side for one last look at No. 23, who has gone from being a hometown hero to villain.

“We are removing the LeBron James Witness mural in downtown Cleveland and expect the process to be completed within a few days,” Nike spokesman KeJuan Wilkins said in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

Wilkins said he does not yet know what the company’s plans are with the gigantic sign, which includes the phrase: “We Are All Witnesses” over James’ image.

On Friday, several fans gathered on the sidewalk outside the Landmark Office Tower as workers prepared to remove the billboard.

“My mom wanted us to get a picture of it before they brought it down,” said Kayla Mack of Norwalk, Ohio. “It’s very bittersweet.”

After James announced his decision to leave Cleveland as a free agent Thursday night, some irate Cavs fans feeling betrayed by the Akron native they’ve cheered for since he was a teenager, burned the two-time MVP’s jersey. Others hurled rocks at the mural, which towers over the corners of Ontario and Prospect avenues – a long 3-pointer from Quicken Loans Arena, home of the Cavaliers.

Elsewhere, James jerseys, so fashionable during his seven-year stay, can be found at discounted rates as merchants look to get rid of their inventories of Cleveland’s career scoring leader and arguably the most celebrated pro athlete in the city’s history.

At Dick’s Sporting Goods in Westlake, James jerseys have been reduced to $29.99 with the store offering a further 75 percent reduction. T-shirts and other merchandise with James’ face or number on it are also at bargain prices.

Businesses are also offering perks in exchange for James’ jersey. At McNulty’s Bier Market in Ohio City, anyone turning in a James jersey or T-shirt got a free beer. Anyone with a T-shirt, hat or tattoo featuring another Cleveland sports star got a free second round.

In addition, Fathead.com, an online retailer owned by Cavs owner Dan Gilbert dropped the price of its LeBron Fathead wall decals from $99.99 to $17.41, which happens to be the same year Revolutionary War traitor Benedict Arnold was born.

Following James’ announcement to join fellow free-agent stars Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami, Gilbert posted letter to Cleveland fans, ripping James for “a several-day narcissistic, self-promotional buildup culminating with a national TV special of the decision unlike anything ever ‘witnessed’ in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment.”

Later, in an interview with the AP, Gilbert accused James of quitting in the playoffs the past two seasons.

“LeBron James needs to go to another team with two superstars already so he can win a championship,” Gilbert said. “We will win a championship before (the Heat) do. … It’s not about him leaving. It’s the disrespect. It’s time for people to hold these athletes accountable for their actions. Is this the way you raise your children? I’ve been holding this all in for a long time.”

I think Cleveland is being childish and selfish, and will probably scare away other big name nba players who see this as very vindictive. Cleveland should be thankful for the years of team building and spotlight that Lebron brought to the city, not to mention the jobs and income that came into the city. Show some appreciation for the young man and wish him well, not be so nasty.

I wonder how many ball player have been kicked to the side once they were no longer useful in Cleveland? Where is the “loyalty” there? Does the owner give non-playing ballers jobs once they can’t play ball?

I have been watching sports for quite a while, and I can’t recall such foolishness ever being displayed like this, over ONE single person leaving a team.

I think it’s disgusting that the BOY calls himself ‘King James’ and everyone just follows that shyt….smh

“I’ve been holding this all in for a long time”

Holding what for a long time? See there is the question. LeBron just left and you’ve been holding what a long time? You’ve been holding the fact that athletes can leave and go somewhere else? Is that it ‘massa’? It sounds like there is more going on here than anybody is willing to admit or realize.

If you want to say that he had an hour long special to do it, okay I will say that you have a point but anything else? Forget it. Get over it. Here in Dallas, fans here wanted Dirk Nowitzki to leave so he could get a ring but he chose to resign. The fans here don’t believe the Mavericks will win a ring and they may be right. Fans don’t know what they want.

I’ve never seen such behavior over a guy going to another team. It’s his career, he gave them 7 years of his time and talent. Move on, Cleveland. . . .Lebron is.

Cleveland folks need to give this man a break. He’s trying to win a ring and he hasn’t done it in 7 years in Cleveland so he needs to soar his oaks. Stop hating on the man and trying to hold him back so the city can continue making money on him. He’s teaching his children if something doesn’t work out, move on until it does. Why stay somewhere when ur not getting what it is u want? Just another city/man trying to hold him back. Congrats James and no matter where u go, i still love ya and u do u and forget the negativity that’s out there.

You know what Cleveland, you can get rid of the image of Lebron, but you cant get rid of the man. Apparently the didnt have his back when he was there, look how quick they flipped…Idiots.

This is the way of the world..and the thanks he gets for all that he has contributed to the team and the city, by putting them on the map. Nobody really took interest in Cleveland, until the picked up Lebron. Did they think he would stay there forever? My guess yes, when you have a cash cow (which is how he was used, u milk it for all you can, while the milkings good…after u cant milk anymore u want to take the cow out to slaughter). U are IT, until you start trying to use your brain and make decisions based on what you feel is in your best interest.

I know the city Of Cleveland is upset about losing Lebron…but this should teach them a lesson. Lebron is but one man. He might have been the heart or soul of the team…but when you put all the pressure to carry a team on one man’s shoulders, eventually the burden gets to heavy to bear. He wasnt the only player out there, so maybe his decision willl force Cleveland into a position to make all the other players work hard and earn those millions, by producing wins, and if they cant, then its time to find some new talent.

No matter what they do this his jerseys or images…they cant take away his talent.

I was born and raised in Cleveland.I just want to say that Lebron, did give Cleveland 7 of the best year’s they’ve had in a long time.National exposure etc;…He could’ve went about the whole ordeal much differently.Especially for his core fan base. But the way Clevelander’s,have responded toward’s this has been ridiculous. How soon they’ve forgotten about the play off’s the team has been in just about every year Lebron’s,been there.Due mostly because of him. They put to much weight and expectation’s on his shoulder’s.Now maybe he won’t have to carry the whole team. They(teammate’s)should’ve signed their check’s over to him. It’s a matter no Cleveland, team’s will ever get a Championship, especially because of the way fan’s seem to be so very Un-appreciative!…I wish Lebron con’d success and I hope he does get a ring.It only makes sense to remove the banner.

@samsthewon….We here at home know he tanked the playoffs…he admits to it. He had this planned for a minute now. Being a Clevelander you also know how serious we take our sports…losing team or not. Cleveland fans are loyal to a freakin fault. That may be our biggest problem…For example…when Art Modell took our beloved Browns to Baltimore..he became public enemy number one..and to this day he sneaks into town when he comes here. I feel sorry for LeBron…he had a whole city in his hand…and chucked it to become D. Wade’s b@#$h….oh well…Browns season is drawing near…and we’ll cheer on our beloved Josh Cribbs!! (For those of you who don’t know..Josh Cribbs was a free agent and wanted a better contract from the Browns…THE FANS pressured the ball club and got this man whatever he asked)

MAN I CANT BELIEVE their are some die hard fans like that wow ppl take the game very serious i see.. benedict arnold? thats a little extreme but he should do whats best for him but dismantling the city taking down his picture thats nuts if they were real fans of his then they would understand he got to do him and leave somethings up to even try to get him back…bunch of dummies in ohio

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/divainohio/ divainohio

@truth hutrs….most homegrown ball players who play here…stay here…take the legendary Jim Brown who is a superstar…he made Browns history and although he has traveled the world over…he is still with the Browns. I admit we’re a weird lot here in Cleveland…but one thing we are is loyal to our sports. Cleveland has always been on the map..we didn’t need LeBron for that. Ask Pittsburg…..
