Transformers’ Racist “Little Black Sambots”

By News One June 24, 2009 10:15 am

My friend Kevin Clark at The Urban Daily saw this movie and said he was disturbed by the Sambots, robot Sambos who epitomized negative stereotypes of African Americans. Here’s his review.

From UGO.com

One should expect explosions and cleavage in a Michael Bay film, but should one expect the perpetuation of racial stereotypes?

If you snoop around movie sites today, you’ll find references to Mudflap and Skids, twin Autobots from Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen who bear more than a passing resemblance to minstrel show depictions of African Americans. CHUD.com aptly dubbed them Little Black Sambots. The wider story is that Mudflap and Skids are just the tip of the insensitive iceberg in Bay’s newest film. Here is a list of what you can expect when you go to see the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Mudflap and Skidz – the aforementioned “from da hood” Autobots with gold teeth, poor grammar, the inability to read (or speak with inside voices) and, final sigh, actual simian features. The voice work (by Spongebob Squarepants’ Tom Kenny) is more of the Howard Stern/Amos & Andy style as opposed to the Chris Rock “daaaaaamn!” variety.

lol…. oooooooooooooook another stupid article…..people need to relax with calling everything racist.

  • 7-6-2009 12:03 pm

I think the jokes that white people make about blacks or pretty much corny. The jokes doesn’t upset me cause the jokes they make is not about me. I believe the jokes they use are like 500 year old just like the chicken and watermelon jokes, the cant read jokes, I know a few whites that eat chicken and watermelon and i knew a couple that couldn’t read. My black people rise above it like we have already have.

  • 6-30-2009 2:50 pm

Actually, the sad part about this is that it was white mainstream reviewers that recognized how overtly racist these characters are- and how even more sad our (black people’s) desensitization is toward it.

We are so used to being portrayed, and portraying ourselves as buffoons, criminals and ho’s in mainstream media (The Wayans, BET, every almost every Tyler Perry project)- that we don’t realize how racist and damaging it is to our own collective image of ourselves- and of how people see African-Americans around the world.

Michael Bey- the film’s Director did not see anything wrong with the characters- even when told that people saw them as insensitive streotypes. He didn’t even pause to contemplate it. That’s the problem! When Black people accept the images, other people see them as acceptable ways to portray us. If the Wayans, or Tyler Perry can do it- it’s okay for Michael Bey to do it too.

The last line of Spike Lee’s “Do The Right Thing” is just as relevant on it’s 20th Anniversary…. Black People- “Wake Up!”

  • 6-30-2009 2:50 pm

REALLY People Really. First of all everything there is a joke about black people, someone out there wanna make a big deal about it is not the serious for real I am sure they made jokes about whites too. does that make you feel better. and who ever said that black people were the only ones to have gold teeth. for real GET OVER IT.

GIVE ME A NMAD BREAK!!!! (spelled backwards on purpose)

Every time something like yhis comes out there’s always some soap-boxer trying to make a case out of it.
    It’s a movie people…
I don’t hear you complaining about the crap that the Wayens brothers put out and their movies are fit to burst with the same type of stuff.
Plus I bet you watched and laughed at that stupid Soul Plane when it came out.

The double edged sword has been the main sticking point with me when it comes to my people.
You keep complaining about being stereo-typed while at the same time embracing and allowing your childeren to embrace the same crap you “try” to speak out about.
Walking around with your pants saggin down past you knees, speakin piss poor english, treating our women worse than some people treat animals, constantly referring to them as “B***hes” and “Hoes”, and the women seem to enjoy it. (at least some of them)

Sure there is racisim still in the world and there all ways will be and no one should turn a blind eye to it when it shows itself.
    However…
You cannot expect one group of people to STOP using such portrayals while allowing your own to embrace them.

  • 6-29-2009 4:12 pm

seriously, are we really gonna go this far and just pick on anything and slap on the “racists” sticker?? i personally enjoyed TRANSFORMERS and the 2 characters was actually funny, even though they talked alot of mess and fought with each other (as all siblings do, especially brothers) they still had each other’s back and held their own. why can’t we just watch and enjoy something without being easily offended and ashamed. but i’ll tell you one thing, even though they were offended and stuf, i bet they still stayed and finished watchin’ the movie. LoL!!!

Naji your a fraud and a fake. The audacity to use b***h, a*****e and then use God in this forum. 2 of those negative words you aimed at and labeled me. I dont know who you are and to be quite honest I dont care. What do you raise hell during the week and praise God while sitting in the back of the church on Sundays calling yourself a christian. Your so predictable and transparent. Get your money back for your on line degree. You dont even have the common decency to peacefully disagree with my original posting. You chose to call me out by displaying true ignorance. Or did you forget by calling me an a*****e and a b***h. You give me the sense that you are high strung and argumentative on every occasion. The type of person that others see coming and turn the other way because you are so impressed with yourself. Try to hear the whispers in the crowded room. The topic is you.
I do know your type. Ive talked to you in the prisons and in the community. Your as common as a penny on the floor. And the funny thing is, at leat a penny has value where you dont.

If u r som how inquiring about my academe, rudeness does’nt lead one to the heart of the wise, but will only get you to the grand tour of the ‘Out House’.

To a fool correction is grounds for war.

But advisement to the wise is as libation in evry celebration.

  • 6-28-2009 11:43 pm

Yes, I can read, speak define enuciate dictate, conjur emulciate big words & thank God, I can also understand them, unlike those who read ur jibberish they can atleast walk away with some literary nourishment.

If u can’t keep up with the conversation it is not polite to participate. So, make up your mind, either b a man of intellect, or measure with smbdy else. I hav no time to even address ur silly indictment, quite honestly it is an utter Supbervious; for me to address u & for you n such a fool hardy manor for u to evn address me.

    So, I’ll make a deal, u learn big words and sentence conjugation, sytax and impact, I’ll address u again in 10years. Mayb thn u can measure up. And in ur own mind so as to c wisdom outside of ur poor syntax, sentence structure and poor upbringing;
barberous ‘n’ wrd slinging, self measuring enemies of ‘big worder users’

    Agreed then,

So, you will do readers a great benefit & step off, I’ll continue to call it like I see it, and we should all have prosperous day.

  • 6-28-2009 3:48 pm

Mr Naji. I dont normally cater to idiots but I just cant pass this up. I see the rest of your empty rhetoric and it is hilarious. So the word N****r offends you. Your solution is to walk by it as if it does not exist.Just as you are doing with this topic. That it might go away. Does it scare you. Well it should. Here it is up close and pesonal. N****r. What are you gonna do about it. Are you gonna fight for a solution or sit here and cry because you dont understand. Your too stupid to understand the context and content in which it was used.It wasnt deliberate. Its to invoke a spark because no matter what your narrow mind sees, its for real and you can hide locked behind closed doors just like the raped victim, or you can attack it head on. Where is your heart. Oh I forgot you dont have one. You dont even know when you are being insulted whether its Sambots or your little unrealistic world you live in. There are fighters and there are runners and I know who you are Carl Lewis. Be part of something other than your unrealistic world coward. And for all other viewers I do apologise for this. I fight for what I believe in unlike others

  • 6-28-2009 3:45 pm

Please..If you want to have something to be angry about, try talking about the prominent figures that you support daily who are helping to further perpetuate this “sambo” image of Blacks in the mainstream media. Rappers like Gucci Mane and Lil Wayne to name a few, and Black actors and producers who portray us as shuckin’ and jivin’ Ooh Lawd where is my chicken characters on TV and on the Big Screen. Don’t get mad at those who are just taking what we give them and satirizing it. Be upset about those of us who give them their material. If we didn’t condone it in such large numbers, other people wouldn’t think that it was okay. If you don’t have a problem with it when we do it to ourselves, don’t be a hypocrite and get mad when others call us out on it.

  • 6-28-2009 2:05 pm

Mr. Naji11. You remember the saying a mind is a terrible thing to waste. That does not apply to you. You remind me of the Living Color spoof of the brother incarcerated and decided he was educated. Reading is fundamental but you just are mental. Your ignorance is overpowering to say the least. Here it is a forum and you are insulting with profanity. If a nerve was touched, stay out if you cant be adult enough to rebut without arrogance and ignorance. You are the loudest voice in the room that no one hears. I have seen your type before and you are the one wondering why is everyone laughing when it is you who are in fact the biggest joke. Just because you can read big words doesnt make you an intellectual. You are a clown with a bogus degree. I am amused by your attempt to make sense with all the confusion in your comments. I can keep going with this D*$k measuring contest but you will come up short. Get a brain and an identity

  • 6-28-2009 1:59 pm

I read all of the comments up here. I went to see the movie and I didn’t feel the least bit of offended. If blacks feel that this offends them SOOOO bad, stop supporting Tyler Perry movies and that stupid azz show he got coming on TBS. Black people will run head over heels to support his azz. Dressing up as a woman and the sort. Spike Lee said it right about Perry, that s**t ain’t nothing but a rub off of Amos and Andy. If you gonna get Michael Bay, get at Tyler Perry’s azz too because I don’t support nothing he do, then he turns around and tries to down play it with church and what not.

  • 6-28-2009 12:46 pm

    Lev the movie alone?

U dnt understnd tht an insult is not an invitation to ‘get into movies’ ))).

The best way to handle this is to not go to them until u c urslf respctd.

Do u c thm prsnting a ‘RedNeck’ racist to dscribe ne of thm? NO u dnt, but u still justify thm using the same turn on us?

All of their charactures & representatives are “upstndng” ‘Above Reproach’ & that is fair to not hav evn 1robot to reprsnt us evn clse to having that character. I mean if ur going to use apples to apples, & mind u, we are talking about how thy reprsnt u too, b***h.

Who’s b***hing or playing the b***h. the one who moves and says dnt touch me ther or the one who says nthing & is assaulted w/out complaint?

No, quite clearly it is u who’re plyng the b***h, because u wld go into the lower door, rther than the higher door of respect for the rite of ones humanity to be respected & accpted on that basis.

No, we shldn’t b happy to jst b in films, but happy to be respected on film: like the good director said; ‘Theres always work at the post office’: Robert Townsend.

  • 6-28-2009 12:16 pm

Hey historical prson, the ‘N’ word is suffcnt. Nt the whle wrd; Use it in ur own house hld if u jst luv shock that much, but u dis assmble ur own validity by using that wrd, way to strike one4 for our enemy. mayb u r an enemy disguised. it isn’t ours but there word, yet u irrespnsibly use it dnt come to me. ur uncooth, I wld nvr hear a wrd more frm u. Mr. unintllignt to repet the slur here as if we rnt awre of that???. U stpd aswhole. Thats like making an 18course meal thn taking a dump infrnt of the guests. U c y i am angry, u cld hav been grate bt chose to b inflamatous. So insted of ur logic, inspiring, ur shock deflates. I jst wish u had confidnce in ur logic, enuf to only rely on that to attrct ur audience.

Not well heres wht I hav to say, & if that doest grab u, I’ll slaughter this baby seal??? hav cnfdnce in ur logic, wisdom and point build up. not shock jocky. because how can ur readr hav confdnce if u dnt, using the ‘N’ wrd??? causes the the logical of our pepl to say ur a cook & 4gets evrything ur saying. aftr all, if u ‘ve got nthng to say jst step aside. whispr the full ‘N’ wrd to ur self if it comfrts u, call ur grnd kids that, dnt use it whn were trying 2 figr out wht the nuggt of issue is. whn at naji.hodge@att.net!

  • 6-28-2009 12:00 pm

Wites r not too partial to truth, how they c us is how they wnt to see us; doesn’t hav to b true. they’d rather deal w/a fool than a person who can argu intlgntly for their own rites, they can’t take advngage of them as easily.

Yes ur rite, they we hav sellouts who like Judas, for money will even depopulate our generation for a few bucks more. see Spain when the Moorish Kingdom extended its borders outside of Africa into spain no one cld beat us, accpt a religeous African Zellot, who committed genocide on his own father.

Sellouts can nvr b trusted, jst ask urself y Jesus nvr 4gave Judas, bt turnd him out to the 12, No, he wasnt european hippy either.

but wites dnt wnt to work with the truly gifted & potentous, of our people unless they are willing to display btrayal.

You hav to really also consder this; when u look at Judas. being used as a puppet, to ensare Christ.

The ownership of IOne: Black Planet, is it truly black owned? Or just black formatted? w/a Black figure head, or ‘Puppet’? But Who is the President?

    What’s the difference?

‘Control’ If u can control the use of knowledge, knwing ur ‘enemy’ u can nearly anticipate or read the paper as too his next move. Nothing is safely among our own, and the potentiality of compramising ones safety of thoughts is lost. therefore, I suggest that we migrate to my email at:

    naji.hodge@att.net.

lets converse there, I have created a formatted web site that is entirely black owned. & For business, I sggest we all go to my site at: http://www.firstusequity.com :D I look forward to seeing u there.

Some things are very apparent and should not be brushed off. For the commentor who stated we tend to make something out of nothing. I agree that sometimes we do. However, this is very direct and deliberate. I dont know if you know your history but back in the days of old, blacks were called Sambo and it was meant to be derogatory.Just as the words, koon, spearchucker, jungle bunny and of course the n word. Wear do you draw a line or are you the pun of all the black jokes made by all the whites at your job. Do you sit back and laugh with them laugh at you or do you take a stand. Sometimes the small battles help strategise the big wars. If blacks thought the way that you did, Rosa Parks and all the civil rights workers wasted there time with all the little petty fights. African Americans are discriminated more than any other race on the planet. The Chinese in Hollywood were considered as chop chop in days of old but you hardly hear too much about sterotypes of there race anymore. Why is it that we are one the most succesful races in every aspect but we are called n****r by every other race unless we are playing pro sports or singing or rapping. Only then we are treated equal but your average hard working black next doore is considered a n****r by most. I think the greatest mistake for our people was the invention of rap music. Just turn on a song and watch a video and I should not have to say no more. It has lowered us into a hole soo deep that our young people disrespect themselves and our race. Say what you want. Why is it that us black folks are so concerned about appearances and profiling than they are with education and self respect. Why do our woman take our kids to the park all made up with high heels and flawless hair do’s. While everyone else is comfortable t shirted down and sneakers. Why do we have to always shine for every occasion. Spend a whole lot of money on an outfit and cant reach into our pockets and pull out nothing more than a receipt. I tell you why. Ignorance. So I say this. Stand up for whats right but also know the core of the problem.

  • 6-27-2009 7:31 pm

My question is. Have we compromised our morals, integrity, and self respect for financial gain. If these voices were from actual african americans, who were the 2 sell outs doing the voices. Because 9 times out of ten you had the “Hollywood Shuffle” White mentatlity of we arent being black enough on screen. It is almost factual that whites do perceive us as quoting from KRS 1 “All black people eat chicken and watermelon, talk broken english and drug selling”. This has plagued our race since the civil rights movement. On the other side of the coin, we do have to hold our selve accountable. All you have to do is go into the inner cities and suburbs and observe. We have lowered our standards. The number one tool is at home and it’s parenting. Intelligence and a sense of pride erodes ignorance.

  • 6-27-2009 2:45 pm

Why as african americans we alwyas tend to take things so personal. We always tend to make something out of nothing. Why do you think that the twin robots, Sambots was racially motivated. Stop wearing your heart on your shoulders. We have, as african americans have came along way from what was. Yes, there is still racism today. But now it is not just the african american community that is suffering, it’s everyone. From race, to religion, to disability, to creed, social status and now even your background. But now we have to learn to hold our heads up high and keep going. When you don’t give into the racism and sterotypes of what other people say about the african american communtiy, we let them know that words can’t hurt us. Oh my goodness, I can’t believe we are mad at this movie about the Sambots, LMAO. Are your serious? r as african americans have bigger issues and problems to deal with, to be worry about the sterotype of robots in the transformers movie. This is the reason we can’t grow as a people, we are so damn petty. Why do we tend to worry about what someone says about us. You know who you are, and yes ther are people out there still misunderstanding and judging us. Stating tht we have poor grammer. Its not that we have poor grammer, it is just a way we like to express ourselves. Every race have a special way of communicating with each other. It is harmless. I don’t let no one dictate who I am, what I am, what race I am or how I live. Everytime there is a black robot, actor or etc.,in a movie, we tend to label it racial. If anything it would be sterotype not racial. We use to complain that there are not enough black movies or actors in hollywood, and as soon as they start putting us in film the first thing we do is down grade or lash out about the contents or the role that is being portrayed. We know that they mostly let black die in a movie or in the beginning. Which sucks, and I don’t like it never had. But I just don’t b***h about it, I write and email actors, directors etc about my feelling about how I feel about something that I don’t agree with or about. If we don’t like what is going on in hollywood stop complaining. CHANGE IT, SPEAK OUT, MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD!!!!!!! It isn’t that aren’t aware that we are being insulted, it’s that we learn to focus on how the real issue. CHANGE! We know who we are!!!!! The Sambots is not how all black act, talk or look but thre are some blacks who do act and talk like that, so Michael Bay might have created the twins from his experience with blacks who carry themselves like tht . I don’t act like that. I don’t look or talk like that, so why get offened. Because the truth is I’m not. Know who you are and what you stand for and leave this movie along.

  • 6-27-2009 2:25 pm

So, therefore, consider how much money went into making that racist message, then ask ur self how much time you shld be spenging to answer the enemy back 1 for 1? If they didn’t see an advantage & a target they would’ve never shot that shot at U.

  • 6-27-2009 1:59 pm

Television & Movie Cinema, is now a free enterprize that African Americans should completely infiltrate.

It is also important to not allow passive or sellout blacks in those positions of decission makers, that is how this went unchecked by them who r there now.

Lets not bcom complaisant, that is wht the real argument is.

You see, when we see the struggles of Harriet Tubman to free our people physically we aslo read her stating I freed thousands but I could hve freed alot more if they only new they were enslaved; i.e. whn u wnt to cook a frog u can’t just throw em in ht water & wlk away til done. You hav to start wth wtr @ room temp, then slowly let the temperature rise. by the time u’v increased the water to boiling the frog will cook in his normal sittng position.

This aint food net… Racism is just like that, when u let smthng go, like a comment or statement even by ur own kids, ‘I thnk blcks r ? I wnt to be a wite suprcist too’ you may one day see that black child on Jerry springer arguing why he joined the KKK, or ur daughter becmnng a prostitute in wite areas. So u jst can’t let that go. you hav to check evrything keep it at bay. we must look at this as an assault on the front of our image, it is frnting us, to our ‘NEXT’ generation, u c it was not a mere ovr site, but a mental conditioning belt to the minds of our young black youths; as if to say this will b your disposition in society so get used to it.

As a member of a church Acting group, for 10years I can tell u this isn’t an innocent after thot, wht they did was to try to continue the insulting ostracizing slur agaisnt us as a people, that somehow racism is galaxial, not just a wite supremacist issue but to sort of justify themselves, that is a racist writer who conjured that, a racist director who protested not and directed that, a CG specialist who designed that and a producer who didn’t check that in place it financially and promoted that.

How many blacks do you think allowed that evil to go on, & to keep ther status as ’safe blacks’, sed nthing?

When you talk about these ‘aggregeous’ sins against us, us and our people, by a network, we hav to consider wht to do about it, This must always be a cnsorted effort. an effort that is aimed at more results than a little negative advertisement for them.

1st. We should be apart of the internal decision makers, we should get into CG effects, Writing movies, directing, producng, all of this is a deturant to these crimes, that suggest perpetuating negativisms in the ‘NEXT’ generation.

2ndly this effort to battle with them. If ur enemy is large, then cut him down to size, attack each local company commissioned to assist the large company in their attacks on us, we must act locally, the ‘big movie’ company recvd grants, billing, other items, but the local company are subject to answering the question as to the decisions they make in producing say CG formats. they must be publicaly brought to bear, to giv an answer and an ‘apology’. That was like them comming into each of your living rooms and calling your son & daughter the ‘N’ word.

U can’t allow your honor to ever b offended, this honor is due us. as we ever acheive they will do stuff like this to buffet our honor.

So, atacking is importanat, ‘apology’ is key, bcoz it is implicative to other things in the works on the society horizon and effecting other social topography. You must do this.

Degragation tends to disassociation in every market. so that is y honor, dignity, public submission, honor, fear, reputation is all what was aimed at with those SAMOTS, if u look at a well aimed .22 shot at us, it can set us back in our children who view it. Nothing done in a mean spirit is innocent nor can it ever be ignored by us as a people.

The impact from every assault on us must be accurately measured, it ws a high grossing film, and so the viewing public was broad, thus warrnting a broad comment though it seems small it is not.

A prson on our side in the wite house is only a plate, you hav to fill that plate b4 you can eat. Obama cannot, if we will not ‘take’ advantage in our neighborhoods, libraries, communities, cities, states, the country and in the whole world, but it starts with your neighborhood.

Who will when? is the question,
It is thm or us, things like this will keep you reminded of that, so just make sure it is us all the time, not them!
