Detroit Corruption Conyers

DETROIT — A former Detroit city councilwoman was sentenced to more than three years in prison Wednesday for bribery after a federal judge refused to set aside her guilty plea during a stormy court hearing dominated by a dispute over evidence of other payoffs.

As guards cleared the packed courtroom, Monica Conyers yelled that she planned to appeal. The wife of U.S. Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., wanted to withdraw her guilty plea, suggesting she was the victim of “badgering” last year when she admitted taking cash to support a Houston company’s sludge contract with the city.

U.S. District Judge Avern Cohn, reviewing a transcript of the June hearing, said Conyers had denied any coercion and voluntarily pleaded guilty to conspiracy.

Conyers, 45, is the biggest catch so far in the FBI’s wide-ranging investigation of corruption in Detroit city government. Nine people have pleaded guilty, including two former directors of the downtown convention center, and prosecutors have promised more charges are coming.

“Bribery is a betrayal of trust,” Cohn told Conyers after announcing a 37-month prison term for her “egregious” crime. She quit the council after pleading guilty in June.

Conyers’ plea deal was limited to taking bribes to support a contract with Synagro Technologies worth $47 million a year. But the recent trial of her former aide, Sam Riddle, exposed a series of alleged schemes involving others making payoffs to do business at city hall.

Prosecutors said Riddle and Conyers collected $69,500 by shaking people down and urged Cohn to consider the alleged crimes when sentencing her. Defense lawyer Steve Fishman firmly objected and demanded a separate hearing.

Conyers declared, “I’m not going to jail for something I didn’t do.”

Cohn had handled the Riddle trial and said he agreed with prosecutors that the evidence was relevant. Considering it in the sentencing would have boosted Conyers’ guidelines and given the judge justification to send her to prison for as long as five years. But Cohn changed his mind — and she got a break.

“The sentence will be based solely on conviction,” Cohn said.

Earlier this year, jurors at the Riddle trial heard secretly taped phone calls in which he and Conyers discussed money, bank deposits and how to split cash.

In a November 2007 call, Conyers told Riddle, “You’d better get my loot.” On another call, businessman Rayford Jackson, who passed bribes to Conyers for her sludge vote, said, “You’re my girl. Don’t forget that.”

Conyers told the judge some taped conversations would exonerate her.

“They have taken tapes and used them out of context,” she said of the U.S. attorney’s office. “I will take the blame for things I did do.”

Fishman said news media had turned Conyers into a “human pinata for all that’s wrong in the city of Detroit.” He asked Cohn to keep her out of prison and urged him to consider factors filed in a sealed document. At one point, Conyers said she had been examined by a mental-health expert at the judge’s request.

“What about my children? … My children didn’t do anything to deserve this,” Conyers, who has two sons, told the judge.

She wants to appeal but her plea deal with prosecutors prevents her from objecting to a sentence of under five years.

Before the hearing, Conyers moved around the courtroom like a playful host, blowing kisses to supporters while wearing dark sunglasses. Her husband, who has an office in the courthouse, was not in the courtroom. Spokesman Jonathan Godfrey said he didn’t know his whereabouts.

Councilman Ken Cockrel, who clashed with Monica Conyers on the council, said there’s a lesson in her case.

“When you are elected to public office, you are elected to fulfill the public’s trust. You not only break that trust, but you put your career in peril,” he said.

    what about ”lobbying” ??

corporations giving money to politicians so they can get them to make certain moves that would benefit their business

These black politicians have to be especially careful in their dealings. They want to play the game, but don’t want to abide by the rules. Fact is, she ended up stepping on the wrong toes, and got caught up. She isn’t doing anything that thousands of politicians aren’t doing across the US and the world. They really ran the okey doke on her though. Got her to plead guilty to one set of crimes, then sentence her based on “new” information from another case? Wow. Take heed, black politicians, take heed!

blks forget there are a different set of rules that apply to them. you can’t carry on the same as wht folk. even if no toes are stepped on, when the 5hit hits the fan, the blk will be the first to be sold out.

back in college my friend (blk dude) worked at a red lobster that just opened. all the young workers were drinking wine while on the clock. mgmt. found out and fired…..guess who? the whts had a secret meeting and decided to point the finger at my boy.

it’s one thing to “play the gme” and another to indulge in bribes and kickbacks. people are always looking to have something on you!

I wonder how long John will continue to stand by her. It’s pretty telling when your spouse doesn’t show his face during any of the proceedings. Hell, even Effi and Cora Barry stood by Marion during his travails in the 80s and 90s, before leaving after things had run their course.

Did she really think she wasn’t going to prison?

Could she really have actually thought that?

She agreed to a plea deal.. which, on the day of her sentences she wants to take back or recind her statement?.. Her plea does not allow her to recind her plea and there is no chance for appeal which was apart of the plea agreement..not smart.. in fact right out stupid..

..and If I was the husband I probably wouldn’t stand by her either..she may have committed these bribes deals behind his back..and he may have found out until the authorities made it known..

John Conyers has his own problems ..he’s under investigation as well..

She was very arrogant. Mr.Conyers is next right along with the former mayor.

These Black people here in Detroit and anywhere else should realize that they can’t do what white folks do and get away with it. Look at Bush and Cheney? Carl Rove doesn’t even have a college education and didn’t come to court when he was supeoned. He never did a day in jail and probably never will. Conyers was stupid to think these white folks weren’t going to put her in jail, and even more stupid to trust them and commit the crime. Now she’s thinking about her children.
