Alabama School Shooting

MADISON, Ala. – A ninth-grader was shot to death by another student during a class change Friday at a north Alabama middle school, authorities said.

Todd Brown, 14, was shot about 1:45 p.m. and taken by ambulance from Discovery Middle School to Huntsville Hospital, where he died, said hospital spokeswoman Kristen Bishop. She wouldn’t release any other details.

The suspected shooter was arrested inside in the school, where police are regularly stationed.

Police did not release the name of the alleged shooter, also a ninth-grader, citing their ongoing investigation. No one else was injured and it wasn’t immediately clear what prompted the gunfire.

Police Chief Larry Muncey said the student has been charged with murder. He also referred to rumors that something posted on the Internet may have been connected to the shooting.

“It’s hearsay,” he said. “We can’t build cases on hearsay.”

Dee Fowler, the city school superintendent, said churches were working with the school system to offer counseling throughout the weekend and counselors will be at the campus Monday.

He also said local officials, clergy and counselors will discuss the incident with community members at a local high school Sunday afternoon.

“We see this as a time to discuss, reflect and also mourn this tragic event,” Fowler said.

Debbie Nalley has two grandsons at the school, including one in the ninth grade who sent a text message to his mother after the shooting.

“He said there was a boy who had his hand in his pocket, and when he pulled it out he shot this other boy in the head in the ninth-grade hall,” Nalley said. “It’s upsetting for all the kids.”

Hannah Mannis told WHNT-TV that she and other students hunkered down in the dark while the school was on lockdown after the shooting. She said someone with Internet access on their cell phone learned there had been a shooting on campus and students started sending text messages to each other throughout the school.

“It was very scary for us. We turned off all the lights, got in a corner, locked the doors and we just couldn’t do anything until we got further information,” Mannis said in an interview outside the school.

“Everyone was screaming, everyone was freaking out and calling their parents and they said someone got shot,” Mannis said.

About 1,000 students attend the school, which has 7th, 8th and 9th grades. Concerned parents were seen hurrying toward the campus, where yellow crime scene tape was wrapped around the parking lot.

Officials said emergency responders arrived at the school within two minutes of the 911 call.

Madison has about 38,500 residents, many of whom work in technology jobs related to NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center at Redstone Arsenal.

Damn shame…I have said it once and I’ll say it again…Teens/kids these days have absolutely NO GOOD SENSE about themselves. They dont conduct themselves at all, and its the parents fault for letting the MEDIA/INTERNET/ENTERTAINMENT industries raise your damn children. When I was in school (yes ages ago!) this kind of thing was NOT happening….Now days you hear about ANOTHER school shooting damn near everyday, not to mention the ones we dont hear about…Communities need to go back to helping each other, aiding in the raising of the children of today. They need some serious help with these out of control maniacal azz kids…

..another CHILD killed by the hands of another CHILD.. SENSELESS.. and it is my belief and knowledge when prayer was allowed in school as a matter of choice for the students..we didn’t have this type of thing happening on the school grounds..when prayer was taken out of the school system..nothing BUT HELL literally came forth to the school system regarding the safety and the welfare of students..put prayer BACK into the school system as matter of CHOICE for the students..PLEASE..

Just for the record.. we have a generation of children born to single parent(s).. no father in the home for a male child is not THE BEST for that male CHILD or for the female child either.. we have a generation of children who don’t know what it is to have BOTH PARENTS IN THE HOME AS A RESULT OF CHOICE AND/or SHELFISH-NESS of a parent IMO

I was raised in a home by both of my parents who are still married to this day..I didn’t know how blessed I was until I became an adult and met other adult males who didn’t have a father or father image at home .. when I came to know those males who didn’t have a father at home as a child..I discovered we were as different as night and day about issues of life as men.

I just hope those who were raised by a single parent..KNOW if they have children.. GOD’s BEST is a two parent house-hold..otherwise, the cycle will not change as NOT GOD’s best for a complete family structure as the best for children.. we are know seeing the effects and LOSS when children DON’t have both parents(mother & father) in a household.

Don’t take offense to my comment if you were raised by a single parent.. far and few in-between single parent(s) have raised terrific children or child..

too many of today’s parent’s are unfit and problematic themselves. even if there was a man in the house, he might be ctiminal-minded and teaching his ways to his son and a poor model to the girl in the home. many parents raise their children to be predators instead of prey (beacuse of their environment) as oppposed to being a contributing member in the comunity.

i think there should be alternative schools for the troublemakers. if they’re gangbangers, absentees, excessive suspensions/expulsions,mental cases etc.,they should go to another school.set up some bootcamp style schools then teach trouble makers a trade and get’em their GED. the kids who go to school to learn are at risk because of these deliquentss!

There could be many components here but, sadly this is all too familiar. When I was in school (graduated in 1980) prayer was not in school and this sort of foolishness was unheard of. Parents need to raised their children and correctly. In my city, a young man was on the playground and had gotten into a fight with another boy. He lost the fight, he went home and told his mother. The mother said,”kill him.” That young man is now serving a life sentence, listening to his crazy mother. Back in the day, you sucked that sort of stuff up…you win some, you lose some but, everyone walks and goes home. Too much violence on TV is another factor…the list goes on.
These are truly sad times that we live in. I have a son who is 18, we talk all of the time about this sort of stuff. I’m not trying to lose him to some fool on the streets. Sometimes, being a man means walking away to live another day, not engaging in some lunatic’s rage.

    @Jack_stephen1..

What you describe as man in the house is not a MAN..he is what you said he is..a criminal minded immature male..not a man..

@bayoucreole.. you are correct.. a MAN is provider and protecter of his family..and not by means of an criminal intent to protect..MEN are logical thinkers FIRST.. which to KNOW when and when not to engage in battles of senseless consequence..

Im from Huntsville/Madison and live right down the street from Discovery. Huntsville is a pleasant place and things like this just dont happen. I pray that jesus works it all out for the families of both Todd Brown and the shooter….

my heart goes out to to those who have been affected by the shooting and to the victim’s family.
@bayoucreole: you are so right, its so sad that today people use violence such as jumping their opponent and the use of weapons when fighting someone else… its not like it used to be when you fight with fists and move on. Even those who do take the high road can be viewed as a coward and the other person may continue to harass the victim. You also have those who are vengeful when losing a fight and may not leave well enough alone..

Putting Prayer back in the School System is NOT the answer. It never was. ‘Praying’ is just an attempt to toss the responsibility away from yourselves. ‘Throwing caution into the wind’, as they say. Parents need to take the initial step of raising their children and stop (like CaliFemme23 said) letting the Internet/Media do it for them. The community should also feel responsible to (and be allowed to) take part in helping to raise kids 2day, just like it was years ago. If more people would get involved in talking to kids and genuinely spend time with them and give them something positive to do, then they’d learn about things that could inspire them to do more constructive things with their lives. Positive re-enforcement, in other words. ;-)

How did this boy get a gun in the first place?…My friends always laugh at me when i say i would NEVER bring a gun into my home with children there and this is one of the major reasons why. Grown men with guns is bad enough but in the hands of a child is even scarier. And i would have to agree with 2good2besingle…putting prayer in school won’t do anything. If parents just watch there own actions in front of there children then we wouldn’t have these senseless child on child crime.

I agree with bayoucreole, just too much violence these days. It’s like no one cares not even the parents. People say and do whatever they want in front of their kids these days and it’s all good. I no longer hear parents talking about “ok this is grownup talk now”…everything goes. While prayer is powerful, stuff has to begin to change on the home front first. This is so sad.

When I attended school in the late 80s and 90s..guns weren’t even a part of the equation..If there were fights..it was verbally or with fist..Look at what this world is transitioning into..Sash La’ki

What people fail to realize is that these sorts of things have been happening for years. And, while I’m not trying to excuse any actions ANYONE has chose to do it been happening. When I was a child gunfire in our neighborhoods were rampid and looked over but now that it’s spilled into rual areas every outlet possible is crying for help. I sadden but not surprised to see such a thing happen given the tragic event but it wont be the last time. You can blame it on the parents but most times the parent aren’t aware until after the fact. You can blame it on music but by the time you’re children are listening to age apropriate music he/she can decipher right from wrong and knows about life and death. You can blame it on schools not caring about the well being of the child and giving their all to each child before them and not just those who really care about school. But, when it all boils down its the communities who have the most affects of the youth. Parents, teachers, clergy members, and law enforcement has to come together and make the neighborhoods what the used to be. When children are sheltered and not loved and picked on the become ticking time bombs. Sometimes a simple hello or a smile to a complete stranger might save your life and the lives of others.

It’s so sad to hear of this.I’ve always said it start with the parents. If the parents do any && everything in front of their children what do you expect!!!

I have friends that have children that attends the school where this horrific tragedy happened. I think someone said it best, a senseless killing, this young black man DID NOT have to die. Todd Brown was laid to rest today. What we don’t realize is once we allowed them to remove prayer out of the schools and replaced prayer with police that’s when the madness began. I know this is a very difficult time for both families involved. To Todd Brown’s family I pray that the Most High comforts you in your time of lost. Shabbath Shalom

This is horrible. The blind leading the blind; niether can see why they fall or where they are falling to. They just know that they are falling.

Everyone hates this. But it is oh so cute when they can recite some piece of garbage gangsta song. We fill their minds with garbage through tv, our own hypocrisy, music, and celebs. We are a spiritually bankrupt people who go to church in mass. We want to get our blessing and breakthrough while we allow our kids to destroy themselves. When something like this happens, all of a sudden everyone is concerned and the parents, “Did the best they could”.
This will not stop, so continue to bump you snoop, short dawg, 50, etc. Continue to play church. Continue to buy in to the new age stupidity. Continue to act like you don’t understand where this violence is coming from.
Continue to let tv and evil beasts raise your kids while you live your life like its golden.

Poor children are stuck with morons as parents and role models. Lord help us. We are like the lemmings.
