black-history-month

From Newsweek:

When did everybody start hating on Black History Month? I have yet to find a person, black or white or anything else, looking forward to the February festivities. At one point, when speaking to a well-known black intellectual about participating in a video NEWSWEEK is putting together, I was stunned by the vehemence of his refusal. It’s not as if I was asking him to march to Birmingham. But I get it. It seems ghettoizing and patronizing to spend one month of every year proving that black history is a holistic part of American history. As Morgan Freeman once famously told Mike Wallace, “You’re going to relegate my history to a month? … Which month is White History Month? … I don’t want a Black History Month. Black history is American history.” Because today the divisions between black and white are not as cavernous or ugly as they once were. The contributions of famous black Americans, from Frederick Douglass to Oprah Winfrey, are widely known. Martin Luther King Jr. has his own federal holiday. The president of the United States is black. If tens of millions of white people voted for Barack Hussein Obama, the lesson has been learned, right? As if. Despite the election of Obama, African-Americans still live in a culture that is overreliant on stereotype and slow to explore the complexity of racialized issues such as the ghetto or Haiti. So you can complain about Black History Month all you want. But there’s still work to be done.

When Carter G. Woodson began Negro History Week in 1926, he chose the second week of February to encompass the birth dates of both Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. Its purpose then was to teach some and remind others that the history of black people in America was not simply the story of subjugation. Woodson recognized that, shell-shocked from slavery and demoralized by Jim Crow, black Americans had to build a vision that would give them the confidence to partake in the fruits of freedom. “We have a wonderful history behind us,” Woodson said. “If you are unable to demonstrate to the world that you have this record, the world will say to you, ‘You are not worthy to enjoy the blessings of democracy or anything else.’ ” But Woodson—himself a historian and only the second African-American to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard (W.E.B. Du Bois being the first)—recognized the radicalism inherent in a call to educate and inspire African-Americans. For, if Negro History Week asked blacks to slough off the scars of oppression, it also demanded that whites acknowledge their role as oppressors. Woodson’s aim was also to rebut the inaccurate and insulting stereotyping that then passed for knowledge about African-Americans—such as the canards that black people aren’t as intelligent as other races and are more prone to criminality and dancing. And sadly, nearly 100 years and a civil-rights movement later, too many people still believe that.

They ought to change the name to African-American history month, since nothing prior to slavery is hardly discussed. I personally have no opinion on whether it should stay or go, but like Kwanzaa, I think it has run its course, and i’m not even sure if it EVER served its purpose. With that said, a true, factual history of our people should be taught and studied daily and to put emphasis on one month doesn’t seem to be productive. No one else has a month that is nationally recognized for the study of their history, yet their communities for the most part (in comparision to ours) seem to be much more in tact. Just like our schools, the curriculum of this month needs to be changed. It always keeps our minds confined to a time of great struggle, and trying to achieve, while overlooking the time period when we ruled the world.

Oh yeah…there is nothing more flattering than an entire country taking THE SHORTEST MONTH OF THE YEAR out of their busy schedules to encompass and pay homage to our entire history! Just makes me anxious! They could truly call it black history if they mention more than just harriet tubman, MLK and rosa parks…Im juss sayin…

Maatra will always bring that Khallid Heat…Developing a nation building mindset is key. This is why we need to Overemphasize the importance of mathematics to the babies. We ain’t building NOTHING until we master mathematics!

“And by the way…It would take more days than there are in a year to celebrate US!”~~ Well said!

“Phuk black history as far as the peckawood now has it set up.” This is a key point. The “celebration” of this month has been co opted by outside forces. Its no longer what we should be learning, but rather, where others want our focus to be.

–As a man thinketh, so is he.

–He who controls the way you think, will always control your every move.

No, do not have black history month. incorporate it into american history. when you learn about our presidents, also talk about the children he had with his cook and how many slaves he owned. when learn about ancient egypt, talk about how the pyramids were designed and built by a black king, khufu. when you talk about columbus discovering america, also mention that the africans had been here before him, and how the native americans had made giant heads with clearly african features. dont box it off into a month and forget about it the rest of the year.

Celebrating it for 28 days to me sounds like pity history to our race while the White ones are reconized and exaggerated all the time and having us believe all that bullcrap I learned in school …..o.k. but I be MORE satisfied if these heroes would be reconized throughout the year……

Ediejones, I concur. Black History Month should be incorporated into American history and taught in truth, honesty and accuracy throughout our school systems. The concept should also apply towards Native American History as well. Not only should students learn of former presidents’ penchant for slave ownership and their philandering polygynous ways, textbooks should also include The Trail of Tears WITH the government military donated smallpox ridden blankets. Every aspect of HONEST American and World History from darkskinned Pharoahs Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure to the pre-Columbus (Cristobol Colon) travel of the wide-nosed, thick-lipped explorers of Olmec civilization should be taught in truth. Perhaps then more of us would find psychological freedom, peace and continue to seek even greater enlightenment.

the public school system needs to be revamped! part of the reason the drop rates are so high is because today’s youth with the info highway at their finger tips see the BS being taught in the classrooms.

i hate blk history month!for 30+ yrs, all day every day in Feb i hear “I Have A Dream…I Have A Dream”.

God`s true power(us black folk ) is closing in on them, that is why they have no answers for the shi.. they have brought on themselves.NWO LOL I think it will be God`s order in a min. Seek wisdom over money, an ask for God`s forgivness. Peace my people we are almost home.

Black people are in desperate need of history-revisited!!!! These kids today are complete idiots. I didn’t have courses made available to me, but I still went on to self study our history. These kids have no damn clue, and you become less and less important if your culture/history erases itself. I was talking to a sister the other day, about her she can’t date anyone but black men blah blah blah blah… I started quizzing her on black history, just important events or things I feel everyone should know (who is W.E.B Dubois for instance), and this women had NO CLUE! I was a bit pissed, over and over she didn’t know ANYTHING. So why is she talking all this black pride stuff when she doesn’t even know black pride? What’s this pro-black mentality in dating, when you don’t even have knowledge of culture to pass on to any kids you could make with this black person you seek? Why be ‘racist’ if you don’t know crap about your own culture? Stupid stupid people today man… Black history is important because none of these other minority groups (even my others) would have prevailed if not for the advancements made by blacks. The history is important and should be on citizenship exams, but most importantly needs to be taught by black people to their young. This is a huge failure of blacks, and if think that if we can get back to importance of culture, identity and history, we can repair black love and black families. If you don’t build on your cultural history, you’re doomed as a people.

That’s why we need to take the responsiblity to teach our kids about our history, cause they won’t learn about it in school. Trust me, being an education major, I’ve seen the curriculum and there is hardly any black history.
And let’s teach them it’s not just Harriet Tubman & MLK. Teach them about Madame CJ Walker, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, Langston Hughes, WEB DuBois… The list could go on (those were just of the top of my head) Teach them the struggle our people went through and that we are still going through.
    Remember Education STARTS AT HOME!

I was raised on those heroes, but the youth today don’t give a s**t about it and the schools are to blame…..if they can’t or won’t teach it, PARENTS should! get the books that teaches about the inventors, heroes, the ones that make a diffenrence in this world…. history continues, not stop with music videos, girls dressing like hoes, sagging pants, gold chains and teeth and all that other bulls**t….
