On his radio show this morning, Glenn Beck was discussing the census and the term “negro” which appeared on it. He then went on a tangent on the definition of the word African-American. Here’s what he said.

African-American is a bogus, PC, made-up term. I mean, that’s not a race. Your ancestry is from Africa and now you live in America. Ok, so you were brought over — either your family was brought over through the slave trade or you were born here and your family emigrated here or whatever but that is not a race.

Well I actually have to agree with him, I don’t ever consider myself African-American because I don’t consider it a race either it’s a label. Since civilization began in Africa wouldn’t everyone be considered African-American regardless of skin color anyway. Why are we the only group of people that have to have a label why not put on the cenusus.. White, cracker, pale-face….that’s something u can work on next.

I agree and disagree. I too, like to refer to myself as “black” or “black american” however whites did not label us “african-american”. it was them self proclaimed “black leaders” who pushed for that term. it never made sense to me seeing that a white or any non black born in an african country and obtains american citizenship can rightfully be called african-american too.

I have to say that-ole glenn beck didn’t just drop this out his a$$. And he trying to take credit for it now. I read alot of comments where trisha_369 wrote this same statment…long before he made this comment. I know alot of you might not believe it but,she stated the same thing and ask the same question on other topic. She never took claim to being an african american and went on to tell everyone that-if you was born in america your real title to your name is BLACK american and she stated stop denying your true name. I agree with her then just like-I agree with her now…WE are true BLACK american. And with that being said, glenn beck didn’t think this one up,just read what another woman wrote and now trying to take credit for it-in my opinion.

How about RACE itself is a bogus made up concept, a relic of a far less scientific time. Yet, why isn’t he saying Latino isn’t a race. Who made him the anthropology expert all of a sudden?

    Negroid

    Caucasoid

    Mongoloid

Everything else was supposed to be some derivative or mixture of the original 3 racial profiles. The whole concept is outdated garbage. Most people focus on ethnic identity or national identity anyway. African-American is just a poor way of trying to do both simultaneously.

I’ll call myself Black and be done with the whole debate. I think if we defined ourselves rather than waiting to see how they will classify us first we would be better off as a community or “race” if you feel like clinging to that term.

Why do we all continue to fall for this foolishness? If Glenn Beck, the government, or anyone else for that matter, were truly serious about census numbers and data, they would open up the books from the days of slave trade and give some true background information. Those of us that were born here with slave ancestry have no way of knowing where our heritage truly derives. Most “whites” on the other hand can date back their families for centuries. Our date only begins when the owner of our forefathers gave them a name. Before that is always a dead-end. Period. This is not just about the color of a person’s skin. Get a cross-section of “whites” together and you may get Germans, Bosnians, etc. Get a cross-section of “blacks” together and all you get is Americans of African descent, or the shortened term is African-American. It’s not PC, but a combination of words. I am proud to say that I am African-American-Indian because my family was able to trace back to our Indian heritage. Should we get started on how they got dogged out?

we were already here. some were brought over from Africa but we were already here in the Americas. So i disagree with Glenn on that but African American is not a race. Black, negro, colored and all those terms are class and status not race or nationality. When you agree to being black you just agreed to being a lower class citizen. It is status nothing more stop being emotionally attached to this word and class.

For us to know who we are we have to research and go to the past. Malcolm X said it best. Something that he stood for and died for.

    Here is the link
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDXPpfGAZrU

    Brother Malcolm X
    WE ARE AFRICANS NOT AMERICANS
“African American or the so called Negro. One of the reasons why it is bad for us to keep referring ourselves as so called Negro is because it is Negative. The term Negro does not point out what we aren’t but it isn’t telling us what we are. We are Africans, and we happen to be in America. We are not Americans. We are a people who formerly were Africans who were kidnaped and brought to America. Our forefathers weren’t the Pilgrims. We didn’t land on Plymouth Rock; the rock was landed on us. We were brought here against our will; we were not brought here to be made citizens. We were not brought here to enjoy the constitutional gifts that they speak so beautifully about today. Because we weren’t brought here to be made citizens–today, now that we’ve become awakened to some degree, and we begin to ask for those things which they say are supposedly for all Americans, they look upon us with a hostility and unfriendliness.”

african-american is an ethnic category refering to a specific type of black person – american born, american culture, african ancestry – and it sets them apart from other ethnicities of black people including british nigerians, black carribeans, afro-cubans, etc…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/gbino04/ gbino04

Being black is the negative term given to us by the Government (White America)and the term black means Guilty, dirty, evil, disgraceful, wicked. So why would any one of African decent wanna be called black. I mean i think its a disgrace for any person to wanna call themselves black. Its a form a racism and oppression. We are africans who are descendants of the slaves from Africa. People u have to do ur research and educate yourselves about ur african history and stop allow these Racists, Ignorant Buffoons to tell us who we are.

That’s fine and dandy, but I went overseas and them black africans let me know real quick how american I was to them.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/gbino04/ gbino04

Maybe. But that still does not take away from the truth. Malcolm X studies and research have shown us that we are one as a people. Now u have to take time and wonder why there is so much hatred towards us from Africa. We have done nothing to them (African Americans i am talking about). I believe that they are only shown thru the media us not caring about them and their situations. Jus like we are only shown certain images that the government want us to see. That is called propaganda to where the media shows the images they want us to see and the world to see to persuade opinion.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/gbino04/ gbino04

The Media is controlled by Racist White Middle Aged Male Conservatives such as Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, ect. that think that we should all be back in slavery or have our so called rights taken away and whites should totally be in control. U have to take time and dig deep and think outside the box to know what is going down. Same thing they have done to us (African Americans) they are now doing to Muslims. Using the media to paint this terrible picture of these people and their faith. Jus like they are always doing with black men in this country. The media portrays BLack men to be uncontrollable, uncivil, unintelligent, always irresponsible, ignorant, careless, and ect. Makes always seem like we can never get over and never progressing.

I agree that African-American is not a race, it is also not an ethnicity. The term is however a way to unify Africa’s sold/stolen people to their homeland. The term African-American was a means to empower the powerless. Slavery was a devisive trick played on a powerful people. Many Africans were sold into slavery by their African captors, many were stolen, and many were avid navigators. The Moors(African navigators) showed Amerigo Vespuchi(sp)where this continent was located. The term was coined to give a lost people a home.

Race on the other hand is a choice between Negroid, Caucasoid, and Mongaloid. I do not understand why “White” is listed as a race either. Being “White” is to be free of color. The last time I looked the so-called “white” people were pink in hue. The terms black and white are a means of conveying a sense of superiority. “White” is clean and pure, while “black” is dirty and impure; superior and inferior. It is a lie. No one is “black” or “white”. Black is not inferior to White. We are all humans. If we live on the North American continent then we are all “Americans”.

I identify with being a “Black” American. My race is Negroid. Negroid is the adjective form of the Spanish word “Negro” which means black. Again, because I refuse to believe that “black” is inferior to “white”, I have no problem being identified as a Negroid, Negro, or Black American. I also believe that “White” people should be identified as Caucasoid, Caucasian, or White Americans. “White” should not just be excepted as a race. The exceptance of “white” as a race, without any further explanation, is in itself is an act of superiority and it needs to be changed.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/AJUSTICE216/ AJUSTICE216

First let me start by saying that Mr. Beck has a point, during the identification period here in america in the early 50s 60s black people refered to themselves as negro but that reference had no dignity, so we opted out for a term that was inclusive and then the term african american was born. Mr. Beck has touched a nerve because we as colored people should’ve clasified ourselves along time ago with a name that would be represented all around the globe, thanks to all the uncle toms and black skined white mask folks perpitrating to do things in the concren for us all! The bottom line is that when you leave being defined upto others and don’t challenge that negative definition this is what you get a colored white boy challenging us on a term that we should’ve passed up on along time ago, what Mr. Beck has done is called a critical theory. In the book Afrocentricity by Moleifi Kete Asante he wrote” in the chapter Language Liberation, An ideology for the liberation must find its existence in ourselves, it cannot be external to us, and it cannot be imposed by those other than ourselves; it must be derived from our particular historical and cultural experience. our liberation from the capitivity of racist language is the first order of the intellectual. there can be no freedom until there is a freedom of the mind”. Stand up and stop laying down cause a dollar is involved. Our president is being attacked from every angle and we are still playing by rules that are non-existent,Wake- UP THE RULES DONT APPLY TO US meaning COLORED PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Peace

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/AJUSTICE216/ AJUSTICE216

America is hooked on classification, inorder to term a person anything you first must classify them as such, The one thing that we must not do is get off into intellectual workouts that dont amount to nothing, yea you are free to call your self anything but remember I am a MAN first. White is not a race either or white american not a nationality, its imperitive that we remember its easy to get us caught up on this kind of trick where we fight amongst ourselves, also remember the TALENTED TENTH they couldn’t agree on anything except what to eat, lol, but for real we need to defend ourselves today on all levels because we are being slaughtered every day and mostly by our own terms and language, please take a good look around the world the truth about every thing is being revealed as we speak.

The genealogy of all man kind, it is agreed apon, stem from an African/Nubian root. Blacks being closer in relative nature to that original genesis, African/Nubian. After their being held captive here in the States for nearly 300(+145 as ex slave) they are as much ‘American’ as any WASP. Most white Americans, while holding on to their ethnic identity, have long since lost their connection with their European ancestors. Like wise, the ex slaves of America have also lost their connection, but the difference is they can find an easy way back into the graces of their Mother Earth/Africa, which will benefit their Mother Earth/Africa and themselves. People need to read more, that is pay attention, even today california got shook up with an earth quake, meanwhile Forida is seeing snow flurries and the wild life is in jeopardy. Cold snapped as far as the Mississippi River freezing over lakes and falls. Just like the economy this will keep getting worst, so we better get us (African Americans) some plan b and c.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Shoutout13/ Shoutout13

African American is not only a race, it is a condition. I wonder if German Americans, Italian Americans, Irish Americans or Greek Americans would like to have their children’s REAL last names stripped away,be told they should just call themselves “Americans”, be systematically mocked and marginalized in radio, films, theater and television for conditions knowingly forced upon them, have their ancestral homeland “colonized” for it’s resources and be told “go back to (insert your ancestral continent(s) here, be intentionally given substandard education (if at all) for generation after generation, be subjected to a system that makes it “ok” to treat them as foreigners in the nation into which they were born, and yet find themselves emulated (notice phrases like “my peeps” and “shoutout” have gone mainstream? Or how much more “soulful” singers on shows like “America’s Got Talent” now sound?). I wonder if it would be okay for someone to “give them” a new last name under the self important assumption that their ancestral name wasn’t good or important enough, to have their origins get lost because keeping record of where they were from in their original continent was “not a priority” for someone considered the same as property. Would they be happy to simply settle for calling themselves “European Americans”? And even then, can you imagine the outcry if someone tried to take even that from them using clever words to mask knowingly resentful racist aggression? The hypocrisy is becoming more and more self-evident to anyone with an open mind (after all, some whites did vote for an African American president which shows what racists fear which is people getting a “fair chance” to see the whole picture and self-aware African Americans calling it to people’s attention in well thought out, articulate responses that can’t be drown out by covert racist commentators disguising hate as news.) If this actually were about truth and fact, people would have been asking to wait for a fair trial instead of declaring O.J. Simpson guilty before the murder trial even went to court (or before late night talk shows turned implied guilt into joke punchlines prior to the trial), the vultures who resented Tiger Wood’s talent and how much money he was earning instead of waiting in the shadows for Tiger Woods to stumble would have waited for the details rather than instigate and gloat over his problems. And most prominent and telling, the willingness to suddenly, conveniently disregard so called “respect” for the office of president and yell out phrases like “You lie” or knowingly “bare false witness” to a person’s background with intentional propaganda while pretending to have christian values. The conditions that started “corporate welfare” bailouts didn’t start with the current administration nor did unemployment and yet it is left to clean up this mess as well as deal with the passed down legacy of the conditioning that constitutes this encouraged double standard. On a personal note, having voiced my opinion on subjects like this in the past on websites, I have been hacked on more than one occasion. I hope that other intelligent, articulate Americans (including my fellow African Americans) will speak out because anymore it seems that stereotypes are fostered and true growth and progress is being censored. As for a resentful outsider arrogantly trying to dismantle the only reasonably acceptable ethnic reference we have left, I use two phrases once commonly said to our ancestors. It’s not your place to do that and get over it.

I used to work for the Census and contacted them on their website about this.
Hopefully sanity will prevail and they will implement my suggestions on the 2020 forms. (Rather than whining about the problem I have a strong SOLUTION).

The terms should be Africanian, Caucasian, Asian, E.Indian, Anishnabeg, etc.
(Native Americans call THEMSELVES “ANISHNABEG” which means “The People”).

I also have a redesign of that section of the Census form that allows for ANY combination of multiracial mixtures and languages and covers your original country roots and is the same size as the forms used now.

So if you were 75% Africanian, 15% Anish ,10% Caucasaian, and spoke French or Spanish etc. It would easily cover that.

If you did the DNA test and found out your roots were from Ghana and Swaziland there’s a place for that too.

OR If you were 75% Caucasian, 15% Africanian, 10% Chinese and spoke Chinese and German etc. – it would easily cover that.

If you’re Caucasian and 50% Italian and 50% Russian and also speak French it easily covers that too.

If you were “white” (Dutch) and born in S. Africa and moved here it covers that too (since some like to joke that they are African American).

It’s a win win for ALL groups.

It is bizarre that the only language focused on is Spanish.
My redesign covers ALL languages. (You just write in the ones you speak like you do now on the form under “other languages”).
That way those who are multilingual are counted. Many Africans who come here speak 5 or more languages.

It also covers some rather bizarre omissions on the current forms.

Indonesians (3rd largest population on Earth), Arabs (1.5 billion people on earth), Africans who speak French (about half of the continent), etc. aren’t mentioned but islands like Cuba or Samoa have their own slots currently.

With this redesign all peoples (Nordic, Africanian, Asian, Anishnabeg, Arab, Jewish, etc.) are covered and NOBODY is left out.

Most of us are proud of our heritage and backgrounds.
This is a way that all can be counted ACCURATELY without ANY bias toward any group which is a shortcoming in all of the previous forms.

I can be reached at rodneysleon@hotmail.com to discuss it.

I am of African descent but not African American, I know nothing about African culture food etc. There are many different countries and nations in Africa. You don’t call an Italian American a European American because we recognize that they are Italian. We really need to remember that not all Africans are the same just like not all Asians, Europeans or even American Indian tribes are not the same. I love my people of color but als lets be real, African American to me cannot describe me my family or our history, it’s almost like an abbreviated book because there is so much more to the story. I like 1_Fine_Artist’s idea, he may be on to something, I won’t say I agree totaly but again it is a good idea.

I believe that knowing more about our race is more important than the title we are discussing. I think I am more concerned why Glenn Beck has bought this conversation up in the first place. What is his thinking behind this topic? Rather it’s a term or a race is irrelevant, we all
know what we are referring to when we say African Amercian. It comes down to what we want to be called, which is something that is not degrading. Why should another race have an issue with that? as black people we have been through enough and we need to take the power away from this topic.

While I do like Glen Beck, Al Sha’pton,Jesse Jackson, Rush Limbaugh and anyone else who feast on dividing people, making money off of spweing half-truths, and such for their own political and monetary gain, I DETEST the STUPID phrase African American.

African American is a stupid phrase that people really started using aftger Jessa Jackass made it so.

    You are,most people are :
    Black Amer,
    White Amer,

Some people are Italian Amer., French Amer., Irish Amer. in that their paretns, grandparents, etc are all the same ethnic group.

    Asian Americans,some,areof 2nd generation.

Most of us all,Balckand Whtie have been here for generations are jsut American with no ties to their ancestors’ cultures, etc.
I did not say all. i said most.

    Census should be for
    Race-
    Negroid
    Caucasian
    Mongoloid

    Ethnicity,the list is endless-French/Irish/Italain, Jewish/Italian, Black/Irish, Creole,Cajun, British/Jamaican, Chinese/White, Puerto Rican/Black, Mexican/White, White/Mexican, Mexican/Hondouran, Hawaiian/White, Hawaiian/Black,Vietamnes/White, Black/Creole,Black/Cajun, Black/Vietanmese, and the other 1000 or more mixes I failed to list.

African American is stupid.Africa is a continent, not a country.
Whites are notEuropean American. OIf they know their ancestory from what country in Europe, fine. Same if you know your ancestory from what country in Africa. The salves, umm, that is ancient hsoitory. Can we please leave the poor slaves rest in peace?
There are no slaves here. Slavery has nothing to do with the state of ourt counrty,The U.S.A. and the has ntohing to do with Black people of today. Guess what! You are free to go, do, be,live, want, buy, sell, etc. whatever, wherever, etc.you want.

If anyone here cares about slaves so much ,please fight sex slave trafficking.
Some do. Some do. That goes for what country in Africa,Europe,Asia.

WE ARE ALL AMERICANS first and formost. Everyone here in the U.S.A needs to get that through their dumb, thick skulls.
The other countries look at us all as Americans and want to do away with all of us and the U.S.A.

I REFUSE to use the stupid term African American.

Have not heard of this cat, cant say for sure but i don’t think he likes us much. He was right that the term African American is not a nationality. Let me explain. America is named after an Italian map maker by the named of Amerigo Vespucci. Some of us already know this, but did not learn this in high school. High schools taught the lie of Columbus discovering America. We as so called blacks, colors or negro have no origin in America. So scratch the idea of us being American, even the so called native Americans are not Americans because they have no origin in Italy. Africa was named after another so called white man by the name of Louis Africanos. So you see it wouldn’t make scene for us to call our selves after two so called white men, those nations that those men are from have nothing to do with us. Now the word negro comes from the word n****r there is no difference between the two. The word n****r comes from the Latin word Niger which means black and no we can’t be called black either. You have never seen a black man in your life, coal is black, tires are black. The so called black man is various shades of brown. From a dark chocolate brown to a light paper bag brown. We are not related to those people who call them selves African either. Around 70 A.D General Vespasian and his son Titus put an end to Jerusalem. Many atrocities were committed against the residue of the people.During the period from Pompey to Julius it has been estimated that over 1million Jews fled into Africa fleeing Roman persecution and slavery. The slave markets were full of black Jewish slaves.( information from the book from Babylon to Timbuktu). This is how we got into Africa, we all know how we got to the Americas. We are Jews not Hamites (Africans). The real Jews are people of color,(Jer14:2,Rev 2:9) why else would they have ran down in African? to blend in among other dark races. Just like Joseph took Christ into Africa to blend in (Matt chpt 2). Don’t take my word for it do the research.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/shango24/ shango24

bottom line most people wo use the term black look like barrack obama and are by blood and facial features half breeds.

further more hatians, yourba, igbo, akan, afo cubans, afro dutch, afro, brits african americans are no more or less african then the next and we are all tribes of the african racial genetic stock tree.

bottom line african american is a nationlity for africans who were stolen from west and central africa and the name is used because we do not kno excalty which part of central or west africa we were taken although faicla features give suggestions but not really because african americans are a mixture of diffrent types of african.

but one day if a mass blood test was done people would be able to find there cousins walk ing around in afraka right now.

    bottom line

african americans(not including half breeds like obama) are dark skin to dark brown to brown skin with natrually course aka nappy hair like all afrakans all over the world.

    bottom line

it comes down to blood and facial features and phenotype not paper or word play

We are talking about statistics, and for as far as we have come this is so ass backwards- to have a negro category!- It speak multitudes of how far(generally speaking)we think we have come and where people still want to put us. You would think in this day in age the government would be racially sensitive when categorizing a race of people, I know that’s a joke but… as much of a melting pot as our nation is and always has been why are they still trying to fit several races in minimal categories? How is that accurate??? People who identify with one category race over another who are actually multiracial and vice vs. is a statistic in itself! There will never be a pleasing of everybody on such a complex subject such as race, but alot more accuracy all the way down to race would no doubt be at our nations advantage when gathering vitals that is with purpose to benifit our economy, etc. Im sure the IRS strives for accuracy for who owes them money!

Dont the race boxes say White, Black Hispanic, White, Black Non-Hispanic. They dont say African American on the race boxes I’ve seen, maybe some still do. But Black non-Hispanic is pretty good. Its closer to accuracy. As for immigrants from African countries, there is an Other box too, they can put their nationality down, such as Nigerian Black, etc.

Why is he worried about the status of African Americans. He doesn’t qualify.

I want to first say that we know Beck is a Jerk! I agree that African American is not a race but think that we don’t need to make a big deal of it. Negro to me says so much about where our country is. White people have no reason to try to understand black folks. I am perfectly fine with being called black. I am a chocolate brown…I have seen black people but not many and totally relate to them because I know that whites see me the same as them…no matter my skin complexion. I am sure they see me and Alicia Keys as the same. So, yeah, we shouldn’t concern ourselves with what others think. I’m proud to be black ya’ll and that’s a fact ya’ll…is my anthem. When someone says black or African American or Negro, or n****r, I know they are referring to my race. I just don’t like Negro or n****r. Even though Negro is the word for black in spanish…but I’m not spanish. I speak English only. Talk to me in English please. Refer to me in English so that I know if I should be offended when we talk.

Once again Beck has put his foot in his mouth! Mr. Beck you are correct when you say African-American is not a race, but what you fail to realize is that it is a People. With america being the “mixing pot” that it is, we have to classify ourselves in more distint catergories because of the different people of the black race that occupy this country. And the same goes for the white race, I don’t hear Mr Beck complaining of Irish and Italians, when they practically classify themselves as a seperate people. oh yeah, by the way Mr Beck, I’m a white african and yes african is my ancestry as well. but i am a white man not a black man. word of advice for you, stop letting your emotions outweigh your intelligence.

He is totally correct. the politically correct crowd (white liberals) are allowed to give Black people names and say some of the most arrogant and ignorant things about us under the intention of giving a compliment but when a white conservative says its bunk then we are all suppose to call him/her a racist? When are we going to stop being the vanguard (attack dogs) for white liberals against their political foes? Our race is Black, over 80% of all Black people you see in this country can trace their heritage all the way back to slavery. African-Americans are people (regardless of color) who immigrate to the U.S. from the African continent, see the difference?

Have any of you Beck haters ever even watched a show or have you formed your opinion from doctored clips you seen on msnbc or cnn? Know what you are talking about before you claim to know who or what someone is.

I am what you would probably consider a “white guy”. My father has European and Choctaw blood and my mother has mostly European heritage, I think, anyway. I have always considered myself white, but I am darker skinned than some of my “black” friends. The last thing I want to do is offend anyone, so please forgive me if I do. I really think we need to stop classifying people by race at all. I personally believe that classifying people by race, only perpetuates problems. I think we should remember and celebrate the diverse peoples we all came from, but policy for the public should not consider race at all, so that we can all be given true equality. I was just browsing the web and stumbled upon this post and website. I joined the group so that I could post as a voice for those of us who do not subscribe to Glen Beck’s views. Glen Beck does not speak for the rest of us “white folks”. In response to KJW_south, I have watched his show, but only for a short while, because it didn’t take long to see the shock value of his program. I found his attitude and show extremely off putting. Thanks to Black Planet for supplying this forum and I wish you all the very best.

Everytime a white racist like Glen Beck says something negative about black people we can turn it around, and smear it in his face with it. Look, how can he make a stupid claim like that? If he thinks African American is bogus, what about Africans in America whose ancestors were held as slaves, and they are still using the slave holder’s names, even names like Beck, blacks are using that name, if that is not bogus, nothing else is. Blacks in America, and all over the world, where black people were held as slaves, most are still using their ancestors slave holder’s name. Black people need to unchain themselves from these slave names, in other words we are using bogus names. What say you Beck, you racist piece of @#!* I changed my name to an African culture name more than a decade ago, I feel so good. And I do not call myself African American, it even sounds corny.
