Parents gotta stop being afraid to try new foods and add fresh fruits, veggies and lots more water to the family diet. Ease up on all that damn smothered pork chops/chicken, fried this/that, cooking veggies w/fatback or smothering it w/melted cheese. Ease up on all the fast foods and fatty snacks. And gots to join a gym. For the price of a pair of Nikes that could be a year’s membership to a 24-hr fitness. Too many times I’ve seen a lil fat kid in an aisle at a grocery store carrying a bag of chips or cookies then turn on the next aisle only to see a fatasss mama pushing the cart filled w/ all kinds of BS!

There are some aspects of our “traditional” diets which indeed are healthy. Sweet potatoes cost $0.49 a pound near me – they are tasty, filling, and great in the oven or microwaved in a covered glass bowl for 12-15 min. I then mash them and add cinnamon for flavor; no butter, no fat.

Collard greens are tremendously nutritious. But hold the fatback… and the turkey bacon, which is also full of fat.

All over the diaspora, we have dishes of rice and beans – beans are also nutritious and inexpensive.
