At Baltimore’s Empowerment Temple, where the embattled Pastor Jamal Bryant presides, the church held an oratorical contest last month and the winner was 10 and a half year old Johnathan E. McCoy.

The subject of his speech … the N-word.

Now if that don’t get some of us out here in line then something is wrong. He’s almost 11 years old and is telling the truth that we use a word that was meant to break us down to think and feel that we would never be nothing but we’re more then what many give us and so many place in the world. We are strong minded people that havebeen throught a lot so yes its time to delete the N-word for good out of our lifes. 2009 is a new start

That’s real. But honestly, we can’t stop the use of the “N” word when we didn’t create it. When the creators of the word stop using it then I’m sure we could eventually stop.

ALRIGHT, AWESOME EXTRA-ORDINARY….MAY HE BE THE LIGHT TO SO MANY OTHERS THAT USE THE N-WORD. OUT OF THE MOUTH OF THIS YOUNG MAN COMES THE TRUTH.

I truly hope that we as a so-called “race” of black, brown, and yellow people take heed to these words and stop the continuation of our psychological/spiritual holocaust!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Mauriuz/ Mauriuz

We must protect them at all costs. I was still crying when I wrote the other message, what I meant to say was “young” man and not “your” as i wrote.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/the_realest2004/ the_realest2004

OK OK…Everybody wants to sound righteous and spiritual about this. It’s really not that serious. It’s not what you say but how you say it. Everyone is so emotional about a word…how about you look up some of these words: The link between the abortion rate in black women and the EUGENICS based origin of birth control/abortion and how it was marketed to black women. They have a whole campaign designed to slowly kill all of us through abortion and AIDS and all you slave NIGGAZ want to talk about is how a word should not be used. Like I always say, if you don’t know by now you were never meant to know…die slow!

“We need the N word our of our lives.”

    lol

Meanwhile black babies have a 50/50 chance of being murdered(aborted)

Police are still killing and battering niggaz on a daily basis.

The unemployment rate amount black males is double the national average.

Black women are slowly being turned into money hungry prostitutes.

Black men are subliminally encouraged to become homosexuals.

None of this is the result of my seeing one of my life long associates and saying “What’s good my nigga”.

You people crusade for petty s**t and ignore all the real issues. You deserve whatever you get.

Okay so name all the problems in the world just to belittle this one. You can name every problem you can think of and what does that do for you? for anybody? nothing. nothing at all.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/APRILKG428/ APRILKG428

    Ok to 6-9-2009 1:48 pm:

More than likely, the reason why he is not looking up those words that you mentioned regarding abortions, is because it is not something that he hears on a constant every day basis. Hearing the N-word is something that he is exposed to constantly and so of course he is going to feel strongly about it and want to say something to stop it. And great for him….makes me very proud. Now, the N-word may be just that to you, just a word, but in order for us to progress in our society, we need to start with those “little” things such as a word that has a strong history of being used as a derogatory statement. We need to start with those little things first in order to move on and conquer these other harsh realities as you mentioned in your comment. Yes, we do have a long way to go, but if we can start with handling a “small” issue such as this little man is discussing right here, then we can continue from there and really have a movement towards fixing all of the other issues that we face as a society. We need more men like this little boy, don’t make a comment on bp, speak up, and continue to speak up for what you believe in. I commend this little boy, he took a big step towards the right direction, and hopefully others in his age group will follow, and maybe they can be the ones to make things right in this world, because all this generation seems to be doin is complaining and not getting active.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/tallynole1975/ tallynole1975

Intelligent and awe inspiring! WOW–by the way one of these comments call this a crusade for petty s**t…I say self respect and respect of others is the most crucial beginning step in solving any social problems…You my friend sound much more ignorant than that well spoken 10 year old.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/the_realest2004/ the_realest2004

WOW, I comment on more important problems facing the black community and I get attacked by whites and puerto ricans?

    lol

Here’s another word you should look up: AGENT PROVOCATEUR

Take notice of how they always applaud people who dedicate their lives to pointless causes but attack those who try to confront the real social issues in our (BLACK) community.

Suppose the “N word” were never said again. We would still have all the REAL ISSUES to deal with. Mexicans and Europeans telling me what is important to MY OWN PEOPLE makes about as much sense as a wolf telling a sheep where to hide when predators come. No thanks.

so what about the people who are doing wrong and doesn’t care?…people have to realize that there are actually blacks out there has all the opportunities in the world, sees their friends doing good and still poisons our communities, still degrades sistas and their fellow brothas….I came from so much and know so many black-hearted people from ages 23-75 talking about how they are happy to have taken a life, how they are happy about the money they made from dealing, how they are happy to have helped the creation of fiends, people whos PARENTS have masters degrees and PhDs and yet say that they are happy that they chose to live life the stereotypical way…some people care and some really truly dont…i’m sorry the but ones that dont are “niggas” to me…………….but anyways is this going to be the 1st chocolate president?…I THINK YES!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/APRILKG428/ APRILKG428

Ok, you completely missed my entire point of my comment to you, we have to start with the “small” issues in order to tackle these larger real issues that you are talkin about, if we can’t even prove that we can shut down a WORD, then how can we expect to fix all these larger issues that you keep mentioning??? And for you to generalize latin people as Mexicans such as you did to me just now, just shows me the ignorance, you can sit here and come at me with all these statistics and things you “researched” but if you can still say something so juvenile and ignorant as you just did to me, then what you’re saying regarding all these larger issues means nothing. Why would we listen to someone who can’t even differentiate a puerto rican from a mexican. You’re not a righteous person so stop trying to portray that…if you were a righteous person and a socially conscious person, then you would have respect for ethnicity in general not just your own ethnicity.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/vasco5/ vasco5

then again, it’s gonna take unbalance to balance unbalance, this world is gonna take care of its self and faster when we participate when there is something wrong for life existant,no child should be born in a world whith no right and life education in the way this world is at know so if there’s homo it’s also saying no kids the N-WORD WAS positive before it became negative it’s just another reverse psycolgy todetach black ppl from there true culture, the n****r derive from> negro that’s derive from >latin that’s derive from greek>nacro which mean dead, denigrate is a new word to help the negative meaning of the n-word to stay negative, how the n-word turns from negro to n****r back then pronounciation and lack literacy through spelling cause early america specailly down among many race where lack of education not just blacks whites also the n-word easily turns into a slang, as if you were saying >gimme instead of give me, know how the n-word came to fall in black ppl life it’s a long story you that have to find.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/the_realest2004/ the_realest2004

Man you niggaz are extremely brainwashed. Clinging to little issues that the media TOLD YOU WERE IMPORTANT. Last time I checked whether or not crack is sold in your community did not depend on how many people said “nigga”. No job application ever asked “Do you now, or have you in the past, used the word nigga?”. It’s a shame that so many ADULT BLACK MALES (not men) are affraid to think and research for themselves, opting instead to be a warrior in a pointless war of words (of against one single word in this case). You see, there are intelligent black people all over the country that are slowly turning their backs on the rest of you, and for good reason. Every time someone reaches out a hand to help you, they bring back a nub. You never bite the hand that feeds you the poison, but you viciously attack the one who tries to tell you your being poisoned. This word is the least of your issues. How many of you have even been tracking Obama’s “work”. You all blindly obey and never criticize like that’s what being black is all about. He is doing more than Bush did in the way of starting wars and enacting policies that go against our liberties, but since he’s black you all follow his as if he was your savior. Pay attention, those of you who are intelligent. These are the times that will separate those fit to survive from those who have been getting “carried” up the mountain. Knowledge is key. Unlike most of you, I actually did research about the word…and even still….IT’S NOT THAT SERIOUS. If they can get you to dedicate your precious mental and emotional energy to dumb s**t…they buy time to complete all their other objectives. I’m done with this, if anyone wants to talk or get info about relevant issues PM me. Ignorance is bliss, you other niggaz must be in heaven huh?

n-word got attach to blacks from the greek word nacro which means dead when the greeks when to egypt and sudan of the river and saw they culture and said to discribe blacks as ppl who study the dead then the meaning transcend to latin when the letter G was adapt in the alphabet that’s now spell negro in latin e pronounce as A SO LITERACY also plays a roll

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/APRILKG428/ APRILKG428

For anybody to think that the N-word is just a word and irrelevant to our progression as a society, that is ridiculous. For you not realize that the N-word is just the icon to click on to open up the window to the entire profile of serious issues facing the black community is ridiculous. Like I said before, if we cannot even prove that we can Shut Down a single WORD, how in the hell are we gonna be able to take on all these larger issues. With the N-word, came the beatdown that the civil rights activists had to do endure, with the N-word came the spit in the face to make people feel like like nothing more than sh*t on the bottom of their shoes, with the N-word came the police brutality, the violence, the hatred, etc. etc. etc. The N-word represents a way of keeping the black community down, and not allowing to rise above. So all these other important issues and “relevant” issues that you guys keep mentioning, they all have to do with the same issues, the N-word represents all of that. So yes, it is very relevant, and for anyone to think otherwise, is not looking at the larger picture and is just simply ridiculous.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/princess1916/ princess1916

I feel that a law should be passed stopping the use of the N word. That rappers are not allowed to use the word in there songs. I think that would help alot

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/tallynole1975/ tallynole1975

Your ignorance is still blatant–as you misjudged the latin person leaving comments you also misjudged myself..european is quite off the mark and my ethnicity is really not the issue…the point is that the N-Word is not just a BLACK SOCIETY problem…and here I thought we all shared this society, wasn’t that the goal of the civil rights movement?? I also have a child that is half black and fits into your narrow view of the world..so it does concern me. I am a human being concerned with how we all treat each other. And for you to belittle the words of this young man with your tyrade about larger problems shows you dont actually see the big picture…As I stated already…self respect is evident in our demeanor..And our words reflect our character..we have to start small to effect large change in the world. So do you have any more rude, ignorant comments to make to the white lady? (Got some native american in me too…so maybe I am a yellow lady.)

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/vasco5/ vasco5

don’t through gasoline on a fire that was just a reverse psycology n****r derive from negro>that’s derive from latin that’s derive from the greek word nacro it was positve before it was plotted to be negative we all getting mad for no reason over a word when everything that’s bad in the world is lack of right life education

Nubian does not mean black. Nubian refers to an ethnic group of people in the Lower Nile/Upper Sudan region of Africa who descended from the Nubian Civilization which co-existed with the Egyptian Civilization. It has nothing to do with West Africans and I wish people would stop using it that way.

Regardless of the small mistakes he may have made in his speech (everyone misuses the word Nubian and we could trace just about every word in the english language back to a word with meaning far from its current use)…lets still applaud the fact that a young man has passion about something that matters and the goal is an effort to better himself and others…

still trying to seperate egypt from blacks if they keep pushing that topic there’s going to be the greatest solution for this act that will devastate the world for every unbalance to balance unbalance in this world i don’t afto debate about it cause there is something greater to know than who was the builders and it’s gonna be drop on the mines that are weak for the truth.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Crystal_Blaze/ Crystal_Blaze

he is repeating things that other people have already said. The only difference is that he is 10. He is attending an institution that seeks to classify him as black, and lump all black people into one thing. The pastor appears to believe that there is some sort of unity amongst black people, and so this child has been taught. Black is but an American term used to classify people of darker than white skin complexion, who may/may not have descended from slaves but either way do not know where they came from. Africans do not consider themselves like African Americans, nor do their diaspora in Brasil, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Venezuela, or any other country with a sizable number of African mixed peoples.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Crystal_Blaze/ Crystal_Blaze

Sry Vasco, but Africans today do not even consider themselves black in the same way that you do. An African is an African, and a black is most likely going to be someone who was raised in the United States and taught to think of themselves that way. Race is a European idea…and until you get that out of your head you wont understand this world.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/vasco5/ vasco5

does that means whites should call theselves euroamerican or caucasion because for blacks or african american is just a new way to seperate from the old world for the new, that’s helps bring selfishness in this world for ppl go with african cause ur one or go with chinese cause ur one when ppl in american can’t stand americans go with each because there’re look different,so does uro needs to go with euro find a common denominator

SO IT TOOK A 10 YEAR OLD?! what ive been preaching the whole time. we took a word with historical negative connotations and applied it to ourselves. claiming we changed what it meant, that we turned it into something cool now. Bullshiit! its the same word u use with hate when u hit someone in the mouth or cuss someone out, how can you turn around and apply that same word to your homeboy or bestfriend, it dont work like that. How ignorant can we be as people. Look man it took me two months to stop saying that word. Become a better person!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/NoPaperGangstas/ NoPaperGangstas

I think is plagerism. People have burried the N word before. If you have never participated in a Multicultural experince or Diversity camp, then maybe you have not realized that people have already attempted to bury the N word. The fact that we are praising a 10 year old boy for something that has already been done…..In college this would be called plagerism.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/tonyrp/ tonyrp

Kudos to this young man for putting this oratorical together. However, being a black educated man and after going thru my life experiences of the past 37 years. I must say the word NIGGA has proven to be my power word. When me and my peers use it, it’s emitted with power, especially to those who still think that it can bring about emotional distress when they say it to us. I understand thoroughly why many in our community want to stop the usage of the word. But! The word is never gonna go away. It is too embedded in our psyche and we have ways that lend to the term. Instead of allowing it to make me feel lesser than a man, I must say to the dismay of many who will read this, I get strength from it. As so stated by Don King and others, we’ll never stop being a NIGGA.

Beautiful! Wonderful! and lastly Truthful! It sad that our children can not get support from ignorant adults. Working in the school system I tell people everyday, children are going crazy because of the dumb ass adults that have no sense or reason of being.

To say that he could not have written that is crazy. Just because at the age of 10, you were incapable of reading at that current grade level does not mean that our children of today wants to be as dumb and lazy as yourself. This comment is to know one person, it is for any fool that questions the capability of a child.

I love working with children because unlike adults they are eager to learn and not stuck in one way of living. If he wants to make a plea to let that word go, then I say GOD BLESS HIM! This just shows that he has elders in his life that have told their feelings concerning the word and told him that he is more and better than that. Go on to Morehouse sweetheart! It is a wonderful school along with many other HBCUs.

I have never written a comment this long but it is a shame to read what so called adults can say about a child and even some of you mocking him saying “nigga please”. As far as I am concerned you few that are cracking jokes and saying the word means nothing is okay with the word because it defines you. IGNORANT!

    TO GOD BE THE GLORY

I LIKE WHAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT VERY INSIGHTFUL AND POSITIVE BUT ALSO VERY MISS GUIDED. SOMEWHAT LIKE THE IGNORANT FOLKES THAT USE THE N-WORD FOR NO REASON JUST CALLING EVERYBODY FROM EVERY RACE A NIGGA. THE TRUE MEANING OF NIGGA IS A TERM WHICH WAS CREATED TO DEGRADE AND BELITTLE AFRO-AMERICANS BUT WHAT HE DIDN’T SPEAK OF WAS HOW A SMALL GROUP OF ARTIST, MUSICIAN AND POETS VOWED TO TAKE THE NEGATIVE POWER OF THE N****R AND CHANGE IT TO A TERM IN WHICH WE CONTROL AND USE. A TERM OF ENDEARMENT WHEN U SEE A FAMILY MEMBER OR FRIEND. A TOOL OF EMPOWERMENT TO KNOW THAT NO OTHER RACES CAN BEGAN TO UTTER THE WORD WITH SOME SORT OF RAMIFICATIONS. WHAT CAUSE THE NEGATIVE REACTION IS WHEN BLACK PEOPLE IN PLACES OF SOCIAL OR POLITICAL POWER BASH BLACK PEOPLE WHO HAVE EMBRACED THE WORD LIKE OPRAH AND BILL COSBY. IF YOU CHOOSE NOT TO SAY THEN THAT IS YOUR CHOICE BUT DON’T DISRESPECT HISTORY BY DOWNGRADING THOSE WHO EMBRACE THE WORD FOR WHAT IS NOWADAYS REPRESENT. ALTHOUGH U DO HAVE (AND I AM GOING TO USE IT IN THE CONTEXT) DUMB ASS NIGGAS, THAT LIKE I EARLIER STATED, THAT WILL CALL EVERY LIVING THING A NIGGA. THIS TOO IS DETRIMENTAL TO THE PROGRESS OF THE WORD BECOME A TOOL FOR AFRO-AMERICANS CAN LOOK AT HOW SOMETHING THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO CRUCH OR SPIRITS IS NOW SOMETHING WE USE TO EXPRESS OR JOY FOR ONE ANOTHER AND TO FEEL EMPOWERED THAT NO OTHER RACE CAN SAY THAT WORD EVER AGAIN BECAUSE THEY CONCISELY KNOW WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF THEY WERE TO USE THAT WORD. THAT MY FRIEND IS A BEAUTIFUL THING. TO ME IT MAKES UP FOR YEARS OF GOING TO SCHOOL JUST STUDY THAT WE WERE BOUGHT AND WE WERE SOLD AND NOT READ ABOUT THE VAST CONTRIBUTIONS WE MADE TO THIS COUNTRY OR TO SEE A MOVIE OR READ ABOUT OUR HARSH TREATMENT WE ENDURED ALL THE WHILE NEVER SEEING KNOW EVER FIGHT BACK, OR STANDING UP FOR THE REST OF THE RACE. THIS WAS NOT SHOWN TO US ON FILM UNTIL THE MOVIE ROSEWOOD APPEARED. ITS OKAY TO SAY TO YOUR BUDDY “WHAT’S UP MY NIGGA” AND IT’S OKAY TO FRIENDS OF OTHER RACES WHEN THEY TRY TO USE THE WORD “YOU KNOW BETTER THAN THAT AND YOU KNOW WHAT COULD HAPPEN IF YOU USE IT”. AS I QUOTE THE ARTIST THE GAME ” N****R SOUNDS NOTHING LIKE NIGGA” GOD BLESS AND TAKE CARE!

The N-word is synonymous with all that is evil, immoral & dishonorable, no one in their [RIGHT] mind would refer to themselves as such. For more on Black America and the N-word, check out:

Boy, I am really impressed. Look at a very young boy calling on moron adults usuing the n-word to stop. This is really impressive. God bless this kid and the family for bringing him up the right way. KILL THE N-WORD, BLACK PEOPLE, that way, no one will use it against you like John meyer recently did.

I brought up this issue about usuing the n-word on a site called blackplanet and almost everyone of the people I was with in the chat room started insulting me. How can we move forward as black people when we don’t even respect each other? Ignorant people who doesn’t know the history of the n-word and those who had really died trying to stop it say its cool as long as its another african american that is calling the other so. I noticed that its more of the black rap artistes and sport men that are spreading this hate word so I suggest that we should try to boycott anything they do in other to make them stop promoting the usage of the n-word, period.

There is no justification for our people contributing to the ongoing use of this deragaroty term. You cannot justify it by making it a term of endearment or tribal respect. Like the young man said 40 years after the death of our beloved King we are still dumb enough to use this term that brought pain and shame and humiliation to generations of our peoplel. There is no excuse just STOP.
