Carelli fatally shot Chamberlain inside of his apartment in White Plains, NY after he and several other officers responded to a medical emergency alarm that was mistakenly set off. When officers asked Chamberlain to open his door, he refused. After a two-hour standoff, officers forced their way through his door. That is when officers claimed that Chamberlain advanced towards them with a knife, which in turn made officer Carelli shoot Chamberlain. The 68-year-old vet died from his injuries.

The family of the slain ex-Marine said they plan to ask federal authorities to look into the case.
“I have to question what evidence was presented to the grand jury . . . No indictment sends a very strong message to the people of Westchester County regarding police misconduct, brutality and criminality,” said Chamberlain’s son, Kenneth Jr., according to The Post article.
A racial epithet was shouted at Chamberlain during the standoff. When Chamberlain repeatedly told the cops that he was OK, one of them replied, “I don’t give a f**k n***a.” The local D.A. handling the case said the slur was “intolerable” but not criminal.
