Funnyman Chris Rock spoke with Roland Martin, host of “NewsOne Now” about his new film, “Top Five.” Rock writes, directs and stars in the film. The semi-autobiographical comedy has received some Oscar buzz from industry insiders.
During their sit down, Rock told Martin, “There’s not a lot of the movie I haven’t experienced on some level. I made it funnier than it actually happened, but yeah that’s how it is to be on the road, that’s how it is to do a press junket, that’s how it is when you have a movie coming out.”
Rock continued, “That’s how it is when I go to the projects, when I go back to my old neighborhood. It’s kinda like that.”
“Some people are mad, some people are happy, some people are like I’m funnier than him. It’s kind of my life,” said Rock.
TOP FIVE digs under the surface of show business, politics, rap, and the exigencies of being Black and famous today—holding it all up to the light in the way only Chris Rock can. Mingling echoes of Woody Allen and Dick Gregory with the energy of Kanye West and Jay Z, TOP FIVE is an original and radically new kind of American movie.
Written, directed, and starring Chris Rock, TOP FIVE tells the story of New York City comedian-turned-film star Andre Allen, whose unexpected encounter with a journalist (Rosario Dawson) forces him to confront the comedy career—and the past—that he’s left behind. Starring Chris Rock, Rosario Dawson, Gabrielle Union, Cedric The Entertainer, JB Smoove, Tracy Morgan, Kevin Hart, Anders Holm, Jay Pharaoh, Michael Che, Sherri Shepherd, Leslie Jones. The film is produced by Scott Rudin and Eli Bush. The Co-Producers are Shawn “Jay Z” Carter and Kanye West; the Executive Music Producer is Questlove.
Watch Martin and Rock mix it up about people from Houston back in the day in the video clip above and be sure to check out the semi-autobiographical comedy written, produced and staring Chris Rock.
“Top Five” premieres in theaters Friday, December 12th, 2014.
