A mother of three was fatally shot on Monday as she tried to protect two of her children from a shooting in Oakland, Calif.
According to BuzzFeed, Chyemil Pierce was shot dead while instructing her children to hide behind their home during a shootout. The 30-year-old was the mother of a 9-year-old daughter and 7 -year-old son. She also had a one-year-old, who was not with her during the incident.
Police claim Pierce was heading home from parking her car when over 50 shots were fired during an argument. Witnesses say two women were arguing and a few men chimed in before the gunfire began. Police were called before Pierce was killed, but there were reportedly no officers in the area when the incident occurred.
Two teens were also injured during the shooting. The city’s Mayor Libby Schaaf spoke out on the tragic incident.
Every life taken by senseless gun violence is a tragedy,” said Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf. “Without a doubt, the families who have lost loved ones face the most immeasurable pain, but our city also suffers. We cannot flourish as a city under siege. We must come together to end the violence.”
Police have no leads in the shooting. However, a memorial has been created to fund Pierce’s funeral and you can learn how to help here.
