Janet Jackson still stands as one of the most formidable music acts from the 1990s and early 2000s, but little has been heard from the singer and entertainer since 2010’s “Nothing” single.
However, fans of Jackson were given a treat on the eve of her 49th birthday via a tweet, where she announced a return to music and a world tour.
Jackson took to Twitter to make the brief announcement, which featured a video clip from inside a recording studio. In a voiceover role, Jackson nearly whispers her words over backing music to adoring fans who have been waiting on such news for years.
“I’ve promised you’d hear it from my lips and now you will,” says Jackson. “This year, new music, new world tour, a new movement. I’ve been listening, let’s keep the conversation going.”
Jackson’s last studio album, Discipline, was released in 2008, along with a pair of singles in 2009 and 2010 respectively. During this hiatus, talented solo stars such as Beyoncé and Ciara have incorporated dance and high-level performances into their acts, much like the pioneering Jackson did before them.
A release date or tour schedule has yet to be produced from the Jackson camp, but the reaction on social media has been robust.
Jackson’s last road outing was the 2011 “Number Ones, Up Close and Personal” tour, which raked in $60 million at the box office.
