Angolan supermodel Maria Borges is no stranger to the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show runway, but on Tuesday, the beauty became the first model to rock natural hair in the show’s history.
Speaking with Essence, Borges discussed her natural hair journey and why she wanted to wear her TWA (teeny-weeny afro) during the show. In the past, the model donned weaves much like the other women on the runway. But after going natural this year, she informed her agent she wanted to walk the runway without a wig or weaves.
“I told my agent I wanted to walk in the Victoria’s Secret show with my natural hair,” says Borges. “I was nervous, but I had to do it. When they said ‘yes’ I didn’t expect it, but I was so happy!
Her biggest advice for women unsure about wearing their natural curls? “Be strong,” she says. “If you say you’re beautiful without hair and makeup, then they will believe you. It’s about being confident and always being yourself.”
Borges recently rocked her ‘fro for the first time at the Givenchy fashion show in March. The 23-year-old sent a message of self-love to her followers on Instagram:
“At this moment precisely, I was looking up to God. I was thanking Him for making my 3rd Victoria’s Secret appearance a moment that would help women around the world to embrace their natural beauty!”
#BlackGirlMagic was seen throughout the entire show. Supermodels like Joan Smalls, Lais Ribeiro, Cindy Bruna, Jasmine Tookes, Sharam Diniz, and Leila Nda also took the stage with dominating looks.
