In the wake of Symone Marshall, who died in jail last month in Walker County, Texas, NewsOne remembers other African-American women who have died in the custody of law enforcement officers in recent years.

Marshall, 22, passed away on April 26 following an arrest on charges of possession of a controlled substance and failure to produce ID. Walker County Sheriff Clint McRae says a preliminary autopsy shows that she had a heart condition.

Of course, Marshall is not the only one with medical or mental health problems to die alone in the harsh and antiseptic surroundings of a jail. Don’t forget Sandra Bland and Gynnya McMillen.

Many, like Darnesha Harris, 16, died even before arriving at jail. Darnesha was shot and killed on Dec. 2, 2012 after officers fired two shots into the vehicle she was driving.

Others, like Yvette Smith, 47, died on February 16, 2014 in Bastrop, Texas. The Texas mother was shot twice after opening the door for Sheriff’s Deputy Daniel Willis, who was responding to a 911 call about a fight between several men at a residence.

Then there’s 30-year-old unarmed Malissa Williams, who died on Nov. 29, 2012 in Cleveland, Ohio. Williams was a passenger in a car driven by Timothy Russell during a police chase; she was caught in a hail of bullets after the vehicle came to a stop.

That’s why it’s important to #SayHerName, which is part of a racial justice movement that campaigns against police brutality and violence against Black women in the United States.
