UPDATED: 1:57 p.m. EDT — The “Roseanne” TV show has been canceled, according to a new report. ABC executives decided to take the show off the air after the sit-com’s star went on a racist Twitter rant early Tuesday morning.

Barr compared Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to former President Barack Obama who is Black, to an ape in a vicious spate of tweets. She would later apologize, trying to brush off the comment as a joke, but it turned out that the joke was on her.

Original story:

The future of Roseanne Barr’s eponymous TV show was in serious doubt Tuesday morning after the sit-com star compared a former high-ranking government official, who is Black, to an ape. As a result, Wanda Sykes announced she would no longer be working as a consulting producer for the show.

Sykes later clarified her role with the show after it has been widely incorrectly reported that she was the lead writer for “Roseanne.”

Her defection could lead to others leaving, as well. And while ABC had not commented as of early afternoon Tuesday, the clear racial slur by Barr that was aimed at Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to former President Barack Obama, could have a rippling effect for the show itself.

Barr initially came under fire for her tweet early Tuesday that imagined Jarrett as the offspring of the “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes.”

The tweet has since been deleted and Barr apologized twice, though it was unclear if she was apologizing because she realized the error in her ways — unlikely — or because she was being dragged across social media as a racist.
