NBA superstar Dwyane Wade recently published an article in Newsweek on the trials and triumphs of being a single father.

Wade, who was recently granted full custody of his two sons, was appointed by President Obama to a new parenting program geared towards encouraging fathers to be more active in their children’s lives.

In the article, the Miami Heat guard recounts his mother’s fall to drugs, being raised by his single father and the joys of being a positive role model for his children.

Wade encouraged men to take more responsibility as fathers, stating “I just want people—men, and men of color in particular—to hear my story and know that their children need them and that it’s their responsibility to be there for them. We have to step up as men and do our part. There are no excuses.”
