Attorney General Merrick Garland
AG Merrick Garland announced that the department was realigning its stance to ensure that prosecutors are “treating like cases alike.”
He wanted to see the FBI approach the Day case with the same attention and effort as the case of Gabby Petito. According to Rush, the attention and effort in the Petito case were appropriate, but other missing people deserve the same measures.
The new initiative comes as the Department of Justice reached a settlement against Trustmark for engaging in lending discrimination. An investigation found Trustmark engaged in unlawful redlining by avoiding Black and Latino neighborhoods in Memphis through lending and opening branches. Trustmark was also found to have sufficient internal policies to address the issues.
U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland has ended a Trump-era restriction on investigations into police departments and issued a memo to all U.S. attorneys and other relevant staff outlining policies to address law enforcement.
