Black and brown politicians from Massachusetts are demanding an independent investigation into the death of Mikayla Miller, a 16-year-old Black queer girl whose controversial hanging in a Boston suburb was ruled a suicide despite lynching claims.
Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey made mention that her office has the authority to open an independent inquiry, but would not make a decision until after the Middlesex District Attorney's office concludes their open investigation.
Mikayla's supporters plan to march to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan's office on May 21 to call for her resignation and to pressure law enforcement to turn the case over to the FBI.
