SAN BRUNO, California — Nearly 20,000 teachers are at risk of losing their jobs at the end of the school year, as districts in California struggle in preparation for budget cuts to relieve the nearly $27 million deficit.

Huffington Post reports:

Schools have until May 15 to issue final layoff notices. Two years ago, districts handed out layoff notices to a record 26,500 teachers, but only 60 percent of them ended up losing their jobs.

The teaching staff at school districts around the country are facing major cutbacks as states tackle million-dollar deficits .
