Before a group of about 25 friends and family members, a Maryland couple exchanged vows Tuesday at an IKEA store in College Park, according to recent news report.

Amid the aisles of modern furniture and the aroma of Swedish meatballs, Julie Rodgers and Willie “Bear” Pittman tied the knot in the first ever wedding at the store. Watch it here:

One shopper who observed the wedding told WTOP, a Washington, D.C.-area radio station:

“This is the craziest thing I’ve ever seen. Who wants to get married in IKEA?”

But the couple had their own special reason.

They decided to conduct their nuptials at IKEA to commemorate the scene of their first date in 2010, when they browsed the furniture and talked over meatballs in the store’s cafeteria.

Recalling their first date, Rodgers told WTOP:

“As we’re leaving, we get yogurt cones and we’re on the way to the parking lot when it hits me. I turned to him and said, ‘This is one of the best dates I’ve ever had,’ to which he said, ‘This is a date?'”

The two had known each other since childhood but had never dated.

Thirty years later, they reconnected via a social networking site and decided to go on their first date, Pittman said.

Credit IKEA for helping the sparks fly, and now making them an official item.

A College Park store official said they would consider other wedding requests as they come in.

Sharon Black told WTOP:

“We’ll entertain them all, but we’ll see where it goes from here. We’re not really in the wedding business.”

Given the lavish weddings most celebrities have these days, it’s refreshing to see a couple honor their marriage in such an unpretentious way.

Only time will tell if their marriage is more durable than some IKEA furniture.
