Effective January 2010, Dawkins will become the sole owner of the McDonald’s restaurant at Broad and Diamond streets.

“I have a very good sense of accomplishment,” Dawkins said in regards to becoming a franchise owner. “It’s just really exciting to know that come January that this will become my store. It will no longer be my father’s store and I just run it. It will have my company’s title on it.”

Her father, John Dawkins III, is the president and CEO of Jo-Dan Enterprises and owner of nine McDonald’s franchises in Philadelphia.

Dawkins was first exposed to the family business during her girlhood years.

“I pretty much grew up in the business,” said Dawkins, who has recollections of wiping down tables at one of her family’s locations at the age of five.

She would go from helping out unofficially to obtaining her first real McDonald’s position at the store in the Philadelphia Zoo. From there, she would spend her summers throughout high school working at other family-owned locations around the city.

After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in international business from North Carolina State University in 2003, Dawkins decided that she wanted to join the management ranks of her family’s business. Dawkins started working at the Broad and Diamond streets location in 2004. Two years later, Dawkins received corporate approval to become a majority owner.
