If biracials dont want to be considered black they dont have to. The day of the one drop rule is over. People say they will always be considered and treated black. That’s not true. They will be considered and treated like people of color. They will never be looked as white unless they can “pass”. Well my brothers wife is mixed “bi-racial” , and I have bi-racial cousins. In my corner what I’m around my family is very accepting to just about any race and were just a big mixing pot.

On the other hand about the girl in the video who had said, “black girls”, call her “light skin girl”, or who does she think she is “with that hair”? For one lets not cry for help because I’ve also been around “bi-racial” girls or dudes, who have just gloated about their bi-racial features including hair,skin tone and the color of their eyes. So sometimes its not just the one race to blame, some bi-racial people just seem to accept who they are. But it goes both ways theres the “bi-racial” people who are mixed with black,white,latino,asian,italian, whateva and they have no problem with letting you know that they enjoy having the best of both worlds with whateva their mix may be. And then you have the other ones on the video who just seemed not to know which side that they have more of an acceptance to, or who they rather be accepted with.

Wow, the last little boy gave great advice. I suppose that I can see where bi-racial people would feel as though they didn’t fit into both worlds, but I believe that there is an equal issue with identifying yourself with one race as there is with two. I went to school with several girls and guys who were bi-racial and during a camp retreat, each of them stated that they felt as though they had the best of both worlds because they were accepted by both black and white communities. I know that this isn’t the case for EVERY single bi-racial person, but I don’t feel like they have it worse off than some black people. Just because I’m a black woman doesn’t mean I fit into the mold that black society has created. I have encountered these problems even in college where you would think people would have matured. I don’t think just because you call yourself biracial that you can’t be prejudiced. I have seen “biracial” people make some very anti-Black comments as well as anti-White comments. I knew a few who would use skin whitener or bleach, relax their hair, sleep with any white man or black for that matter depending on how down they were trying to be with a particular race.

Also, these “biracial” sob stories are killing me. There are plenty of people who identify with one race who have been teased, beat up, called names, etc. So called “Biracial” people aren’t the exception to childhood and even adult taunts.

Well this subject of races. There is only one race. I have heard if you have a % of black your black. I just know that whatever anyone would say about the issue the problem lies deep within the psychic of the whites that made this an issue from the beginning—so don’t fault us with darker skin because we can or don’t want to be lighter–just accepted for who we are.

I’m not sure what side of the family determines your “race”. In a lot of countries and back in the day, the mother’s last name would be used so who knows. All I have noticed is that people go by how you L-O-O-K. They don’t care what your racial make-up is. If you Look Black, you’re Black. If you look White, you’re White, etc. I’ve seen more “mixed” kids that just looked “black” and full Black kids that looked “mixed”. You do realize that if a black woman looks like she is from a different race she is treated different from all groups of people right?

If your daughters looked mixed they will face the challenges of women of color. To say they will be treated like full black women is ignorant. I know for a fact I dont get treated the same as a dark skinned black woman when it comes to how black people and non black people view us.

So moving past the ignorance and the dumb comments I am clearly not mixed however my daughter is(Black and Indian as in India) and with every new introduction the first question is always what is she mixed with,not what is her name, or how old is she. It is too early for her to understand since she is only 3 but I know in time that she will grow to have similar identity issues. My biggest fear is that the issues will arise in our home. It is not likely that if and when I do have other children that will be bi racial or even of a lighter tone and I know first hand how difficult it is being totally different from your siblings. There is no clear way to make it any easier for her, but I will love her and remind her that she is who she is and she doesn’t have to be put into a box because it makes it less complicated for others to label her. I will teach her she is who she defines herself to be and that she does not have to answer to or accept anything less then that.

I’m from Louisiana where most black people are really light-skinned and accept who they are and that’s Black. And to Mywua, the percentage of black you had in you, that was an actual law a long time ago made by white people. I think bi-racial people and everyone for that matter, has be be themselves and love themselves for who they are. Sometimes I really can’t believe when people say that their race has had it/gets it “the worst”. Sure, now Native American/Indians aren’t in our news for racism often. And why is that? Oh yeah, our government wiped the majority from the face of our planet. I’m not saying my ancestor’s pain is more than other races, I’m saying that no one can say who’s had it the worst, we’ve all had our personal experiences.

To the point, this video really speaks to me. I have light skin with freckles and Auburn hair. Most people do not guess that I am 1/4 Native American/Indian and a bit Hispanic. However, my younger sister has the darker coloring and is often mistaken for Hispanic. It was uncomfortable, growing up, when people looked at us, from one to the other. I could hear them wondering if we were full-siblings. My sister was always given a harder time in school. I always wonder if it is because her skin and hair is dark, and mine is light. However, my light skin has not given me a life free of racism, that life is impossible at this point in time – may we strive to change that.

I had a political science class last semester, where we had to read a book called Privilege, Power, and Difference. In this book it says that people feel more comfortable with people when they can put them into a category. For example if they see a person who is obviously mixed race, they can not be satisfied with the fact that the person is mixed race. They want them in a category. Also this book states that for many people if u are mixed race that u will be placed in the lowest class. For example if u r black and white, then people will consider u black instead of white because the black race is considered to be a lower denomination than white. I found this book very interesting. Many of the things that were talked about in this book are soooo true.

First let’s clear this up,NOT ALL LIGHT SKINNED PEOPLE ARE BIRACIAL, Not all biracials are light skinned it really goes on how you look. Non mixed light skinned people still benefit from the european pedestal. When I’m talking about “not that black”, I’m not talking about when they ASSUME that you are mixed with european and how they treat you differently just off an ASSUMPTION that you have a european parent. I think that people whom are dealing with this problem needs to understand history. If we would take time to understand the Colombian exchange, slavery, and et cetera. Then we would understand that there is no such thing as a pure race, as a result, there is no 100% Italian, Anglo-Saxon, Latino, African, and et cetera. This issue of race is something that emerge from slavery. Unfortunately, every American black,white,asian,latino people who share in the different ethnic groups or “color” are t be blamed for this problem we have with so called race.

The title alone made me feel as if being black was a negative thing. If the whole idea of this doc**entary is to let the world now that you belong to two or more racial groups why isn’t it called “Bi-Racial…Not Black, Hispanic or White Damn It”…? Yes this country is slowly evolving, but being apart of the black American race is still a up hill battle. I think the discrimination that the mulatto race faces are a shame, yet is it a constant reminder of how divided we are as a country. They are being told to choose a racial group or it will be chosen for them. Unfortunately, being apart of the black race seems like a hard pill to swallow for many. I agree with the comments that say that although a person is bi-racial, in society if you have any black in you, you are considered black. It is just the reality of the situation. Black is a culture and that is what I teach my children. My daughters used to debate about their “blackness” because one is very light and the other one isn’t (and neither one is “bi-racial”). There are genetic factors that allow people of color to be all shades of beautiful, and that is what we should be teaching our children. But when it all boils down, we are Black to the rest of the world, no matter what we want to be.

The funniest thing is there is not pure race in this country. Go back into your family far enough and you will find that there is some of everything inside of you. Example blue/green eyes run ramped in the generation before me in my family and the generation after me. So where did that come from? just look within your family and you will find that most black americans are mixed, with something and it’s no such thing as a pure race. The closest thing is the japanese because they purposely separated themselves from the white man back in the pre edo and edo period they didn’t allow anything non japanese to impose on their culture. I myself am tri- racial. My grandmother on my mothers side mother was half native american and half white and my grandfather on my mothers side was black. my father was black. WELL, this is a subject I can definitely speak on. As a Hispanic Father of a Half Black daughter I totally understand this little doc**entary. My daughter too has had to make it known to family members and friends that she is not one or the other. I have always taught her that she is both and not to let anyone, not even society, Define who she is. The days of the “One Drop” law are gone. When I was in the Navy I had a few Biracial friends who were Black and White but ALWAYS identified with just being Black. I always had a problem with that. To me, that is like flat out denying you have another parent who is not black. So to make sure my daughter did not have that mentality I told her to be proud and to love both sides. She is 14 now and very assure of her identity. She knows when she is around her black family and she is the lightest one its because of ME, her hispanic Father. When she is around my family and she is darker than everyone of us its because of her BLACK mother. It is sad that these children in Present day America still have to put up with this B.S. No Biracial child, regardless of what two races they come from, should have to forced to pick a side. I know soooo many black people who are mixed and are dark skinned and dont appear to have a drop of white blood, but in the end their more mixed then me. My family is Creole. I have friends who are from South Africa who are “colored”. There has been and always will be a separation of those who will and won’t identify with those they most favor. In this country BLACK ( from an American experience) comes in so many shades it IS a denial to say your anything but black when that’s what you appear. White comes in many shades too… but they have no problem even if they tan to a shade black as me with being white.

In my personal opinion, I believe that legally ALL races should be eliminated (ONLY on ‘paper’, people, okay?)! That way everyone can be judged not by skin tone or any other petty or socially useless aspects of their lives, but by who they are! This would minimize racism in Job interviews and many other areas of life where racism negatively effects people’s lives! The only thing is, I don’t think that Governments (Especially the U.S. Govt.) would actually implement such a move, primarily because virtually ALL places of business would complain about NOT KNOWING the racial origin of the people their dealing with, catering to or considering hiring. But I believe that the world (Citizens) would be MUCH better off if we’d quit giving a damn about such insignifigant issues. [This has been another Public Service Announcement];-)

Unless someone has miss the mark and do not know their heritage many of us who are classified as African American are not pure African. How do you try to classify a race that is a mixture of several different ethnic groups. I am considered African American yet my grandmother is of Indian heritage which is Black Foot and Cherokee. There are several black (African American who has the same heritage) If you look at African Americans which diverse several hues of colors. At what point do you consider yourself a color other then who you are. (black, African American, Mulatto, etc..) When do we get to a point that we have to come up with a percentage to determine who we are. I am proud of my color and my heritage. You should be the same. If you get right down do it we all came from Adam and Eve. Why do we even try to put tags on who we are based on skin color. The color of your skin should not be what you want to be remembered for nor should it define you. ……

I’m tired of people who try to force fit mixed/bi-racial people into a strictly black racial domain. Open your eyes and realize that this belief is rooted in racist ideology which intended to dissociate people from the race because once they had the slightest iota of black blood they were no longer deemed worthy.

Bi-racial people technically have the right to equally claim BOTH races. I can empathize with these individuals because even though I am not bi-racial I appear as such. My mother is German and my father is cuban but i take after my dad~ darker complexion etc, Everywhere I go people automatically think Im mixed with Black and white, I dont feel that I fit in into one race because I am from a mix of cultures. My daughter is mixed with cuban, german, and black, but in this society if you have any color to you at all your considered black by whites point blank. If you are more than 75% black, then it is safe to classify yourself as black. What kills me is these bi-racial people (you know who you are!) who never had a black adult in their home during their childhood who claim to be black.

What they dont realize they are not Bi racial they are multi racial like everyone of african decent…you have a parent who is already mixed from slavery, which was the first and last of the “Bi racial”…after that passing and futher previous mixed relations…so your current parent marry a white or other race doesnt make you bi it just adds to the mixture you are…you look ignorant misinformed when you make statements like that. Well..being of mixed race I do have so many feelings on this complex subject lol.. but to keep it simple–I never quite fit in to either groups. That infamous question, what are you? never stops, last time i checked I was human. I am a black woman I am a white woman –I don’t choose one or the either. i’ve grown to embrace both. I don’t like the idea of race. People have yet to create a sufficient definition of race as it is used in this context. As far as I’m concerned, we are all part of one race, the human race. I don’t see bi-racial…I see beauty. I think it’s great that we have “bi-racial” people. It proves that people who are both black and white are able to put aside their differences for the sake of love. They were able to love each other as humans and have beautiful children and not let ‘race’ be a barrier. Hopefully all parents begin through words and action to teach their children that color isn’t important and that people shouldn’t be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. Most of us are mixed to some degree and there are very few pure raced people in this world…and it’s really not that significant. We have different shades of skin, different textures of hair, and different ways of life. Everybody is still human and God loves us all. God bless you all.

Look my mother use to tell me growing up it’s not need to say your mixed. Because if anyone looks at you they are gonna assume your black.

So me nor my younger sister would ever really say anything then every now in then in school you fill out a form and it would ask race I’d always pause I knew what mama said but I know what I was thinking there was no mixed box at the time only other.

My father was the opposite he say you need to be proud of all your heritage. To deny one and to embrace the other would be disrespectful of either one.

As the years went by very few people would ask me what are you mixed with they say stuff like I know it isn’t white but I know your mixed with something.

I remember when I was working in Florida. And an old Cuban woman gave me what I like to call a backwards compliment. She said

“You are beautiful and have very distinctive features I know you can’t be black or all black what are you?”

So I told her if you must know I’m of Ethiopian, Native American, and African American decent but far as I’m concern I’m black.

If someone of mixed black heritage choose to say they’re mixed we shouldn’t shun them. It’s only because somewhere long time ago the powers that be said whatever your father is you are.

But in truth my father was right to embrace one and deny the other is disrespectful to the other part of yourself.

It took the union of both parts to make you.

And while I like so many other people who are mixed choose a side it’s difficult because in the end you are from two worlds and that’s what most people do choose a side very few people are strong enough to meander between whatever 2 3 or 4 unions make them. In my case I have one mixed parent the other isn’t.

You are often pressured to choose and shunned by the other side for picking one.

My hat goes off to those who claim mixed and float between both worlds.

I have a black father and a mexican mother. I have dealt with racism in my own family. Which is a shame. It was also hard for mr sometimes in school because to the black kids I wasn’t black enough and the mexicans it was a no no because I was half black. My oldest daughter has an black father but she is light-skinned but she has doesn’t like to be called black she says she is brown. My youngest is only two but on her father’s side of the family they are cuban,indian, Irish and black. Yea she is really gonna be confused. i try to introduce both cultures to my children because they need to know where they come from as well as others. You do get confused at times trying to figure out where you belong. I am happy about being mixed because I have gotten to experience different things.

Im Mixed and they sound dumb to me, all of them had a problem with ppl thinking they were black, but not for thinking they were white. That because white ppl dont see us as white. i am mixed w/ black & white. while never denying my white side i consider myself black. i have a good reason for this. i have never met my mother who is white until i was 13 yrs old. my grandmother who is black from my dad’s side has raised my brother & i in a 100% black community. she taught us 2 be proud of who we are & not what we are!! she is a very strong black woman who raised 2 strong young black males. me growing up just around the black side of my family dont know anything but being black & itz not bad its whatever u make of it. we are portrayed in a negative way & people fear what they dont know. each individual who is of mixed culture has the right to represent what they are the most proud of. if u wanna be white than be white & if u wanna be black then so be it & so forth. why are people wether of mixed heritage or not worried about what another considers themselves? we all bleed red & we are all americans. just be proud of who you are & if your not then this message is definately directed towards you…STOP HATIN!!

I find it amazing that people are saying they are just black. You can’t deny their other half. They aren’t just black they are biracial. I could understand if they said they were 1/14th white or whatever other ethnicity and they were trying to say they were biracial. Then i would be like this is some bulls**t. My issue is that my daughter is Bi-Racial and when i fill out them applications for her the only options i have are “Black”, “White”, or “Hispanic”…. where does it let you put “Bi-Racial”? Which is exactly what i would put if i had that option. But until that changes all i can really do is put “Black”. My daughter knows she has the best of both worlds, and when it comes time for her to make friends, i hope she doesnt go off of race and picks the friends that she WANTS to kick it with =-) All in all i like this doc**entary and it surely needed to be descussed =-)

I think the reason there’s so much confusion about whether a biracial person is black or mixed has less to do with the actual race mixing and more to do with economic and political structure. We can all split hairs arguing back and forth whether a mixed person is really black, mixed, or white but that’ll get us no where. And the age old debate will still continue.
The reason we’re debating this issue so heavily is because there has never been a class distinction between those who are mixed and those who are not mixed that has been solidified over centuries. For hundreds of years those of pure African descent and and those of mixed African descent have married and reproduced together and overlooked the obvious/slight racial differences out of necessity. This necessity was originally enforced through our mutual struggle in slavery then through poverty, which continues today. As a result of our intermarriage,reproduction and struggling together on a monolithic level our racial distinctions were overlooked and we progressively formed a monolithic identity through political measures. Which we now call
‘black’ or ‘African American’. As a result of the Civil Rights Movement in this country blacks in larger and larger numbers are being able to shift from poverty to the middle and upper class because they have more money. Because of this growing economic shift within the black community there’s a class divide between lower, middle, and upper class blacks. Most blacks make up the lower class and various levels of the middle class. Although there are some commonalities due to race through out blacks of all classes and the mutual struggle between we share the commonalities amongst blacks of each class interpret their commonalities differently. As a result the class difference is enforced and the differences between terminology and living location evokes wider and wider separation. Some examples of this are terminology such as: “ghetto” “hood rat” “Niggas”. Which are used to describe blacks of a lower socio-economic level. On the other hand you have blacks stating that they don’t fit into either racial group or they have more in common with white people than black people, which denotes blacks who are either in the middle/upper class.
Correlating to race and class most people marry and reproduce with people of the same socio-economic class and race. Because they have more in common than someone who is of a different socio-economic class and/or race. As a result most blacks marry and reproduce with blacks of the same socio-economic class. Because they can relate to each other better because of the same type of experiences and struggles they’ve encountered because of race and class but mostly because of class similarities.
Relatedly class distinction has more weight than racial distinction (even if the class distinction is implied and not literal) because it causes people to bypass race and focus on class or money. Money is the source of class because money is the chief divider amongst any group of people. When money and race are merged to the extent where the distinction between money and race are erased(even when the individual or group has no money) classism and racism is born, which are both institutionalized through politics.
The importance between the relationship between race and class is to reemphasize the class predominance over race. Class births racism through differences based upon money, which is institutionalized through politics. But it also destroys racism by birthing sameness based upon money, which is institutionalized through politics.
The commonality between individuals based upon experiences based upon class similarities monolithically causes people to disregard race and focus on class commonalities. As a result of the Civil Rights Movement blacks have been able to live and associate with races of individuals on every level of society. Which means interracial relationships between blacks and whites are increasing and becoming more prevalent because class trumps race. As a result of these interracial marriages and relationships children are born which associate with the race and class they are predominately
brought up in. But since these mixed individuals realize they can’t budge the
cla-racial structure of the white society nor can they fully escape the shame they feel because of the stigma of their black ancestry they resort to creating self imposed identities; evasion or resorting to racial humanism.
The self imposed identity crisis biracial people purposefully put themselves through and the socio-economic mobility blacks possess monolithically birthed through the Civil Rights Movement is that it sets the foundation for biracial people to financially fund a political movement. Which they will enforce through the media/government institutions to create their own monolithic identity, which will totally be distinct from their white/black heritage. This movement will be funded/driven/led by the middle class and it’ll be their attempt to create class division between themselves and lower socio-economic blacks in order to maintain their class and social status. Racism between bi-racials and blacks will solidify their new constructed identity and continually enforce its mainstream acceptance into society.

First of all most so called black people are of mixed racial backgrounds. The reason we are all called black or what ever label one whats to put on us is because by law if a person is 1 percent black they are consider to be of the black race. That is the law so mixed people can argue all they want until the laws are changed you are black.

Well, just from watching the video the people on show are mostly of foreign origin. They are also very young and appear to be confused as to where they fit in. Our Black American culture has always been racially dilluted. Some of out most prominent black spokesmen and inventors since the days of the Civil War were of mixed race (including Malcolm X and Rosa Parks) and if they heard this they would be turning over in their graves. Rather than get angry when a person of mixed race admits that they are confused we should reach out a greater hand to accept them because they are who we are, regardless of our complexion. As I said earlier these people are either from another country or are very young and don’t really have our family experiences because life is alittle different now. Racism is not as open as it used to be so it leaves many people, including ignorant black Americans saying stupid things. Many (not all) mixed Blacks are beautiful and we are lucky to have them as a part of our community (my opinion). When White people declared them as Black they did us a favor and enriched our Culture. Blacks of all shades are beautiful an we all need to understand and respect this. We are together. Don’t let confusion and ignorance clash with our culture. I agree with those who think that doc**entary is B.S. First, I don’t really care how one defines his or herself, but the reality is that the African American community will claim a mixed person quicker than the white community. I’ve seen this too many times. Second, I am a milk chocolate complexion, but my great-grandfather (my dad’s grandfather in Miss.) was a white man. What’s my point? Very few (if any) of us African American can claim we are pure blooded African. All of us have been diluted by the slaveowners’ blood. So technically we are all mixed – those of us of African ancestory in the USA whose forefathers were enslaved people. So that’s why I say that doc**entary is B.S. Now everyone wants to get on this bi-racial tip since President Obama is mixed. But being a brother from Chicago who has met and spoken to our president several times one-on-one, if you ask Obama what is he, he will tell you he’s African American (regardless of pointing out that his mother was white). So this is just rediculous. The director is obviously trying to stir up needless controversy.

My daughter is of mixed heritage. I am white and her father is black. She’s one and I have already received racial comments about her. F**k it though. Maybe I’m reading to much into it, but I’m disturbed by some of the processing that are going through some of these individuals minds. It’s understandable that they have identity issues, but completely rejecting ones cultural background be it Black, Hispanic, Asian or what have you is something I can’t co-sign. At the end of the day, you’re both black and white.

The problem is that White/Eurocentric culture is the mainstream “America cultural”in which every American adopts by default in one way or another. From that standpoint, white skin is the only criteria for being considered white in American because the culture is already at the core of American social structure. Because most these individuals have melanin, they are not viewed as white.

Ultimately, by abandoning ones unique cultural background altogether, it gives this blogger a sense that these individuals prefer to be considered white, or something non black (which is stemmed in the realization that one is not considered white if they are mixed, thus a desire to abandon both backgrounds is born).

I can’t help but wonder if this would even be an issue if these mixed individuals were considered white…

African Americans as a whole are a mixed race we all have white in us and some other racial mixtures, how are you not African American?

folks need to do more research. In the early 1900′s late 1800′s the was a very big mixture of freed and escaped slaves with the native american population. Many of them were listed as mullatto(if spelled correctly) but in the early 1900′s were forced either to the reservations or forced to change their ID to the term black, for statistical purposes during the census. thus my family that descends from black foot and haitian did not come from africa directly. All Black people born in america, are biracial. I am a dark skinned brother with brown eyes, I have a brother who looks like me, who is lightskinned, with red hair and green eyes, we have the same two parents, On my mothers side, there is native american and white, as well as African, on my fathers, there is French, native american and African.
I do believe that some folks use the term Biracial to mean, they are anything other then black. But the truth of the matter is, you know where you stand, based on your treatment by the police.

All of this comes from a lack of knowledge of the history of Black Americans. Most African Americans are Multiracial. My family is mixture of full blooded American Indian(my Father’s dad) My Granny who herself had a white dad and African mother. My Mother has an Indian father and the African and white genes from her Mother. I have long thick mid-back wavy hair(naturally) and light eyes, with a reddest brown complexion. It doesn’t matter to me that my birth certificate says negro because to me I know who I am, all of me, and it is all of my heritage that makes me who I am proud to be. The problem with this type of attitude is the negative reaction to anything and almost everything without thinking and asking that maybe the mix individuals are just proud of who they are and even prouder of their black side, and does not necessarily mean to harm the rest of us. The on going issue goes back to what was explained in the book, THE WILLIE LYNCH LETTER, the issue of dark vs. light, black vs. white. Think about it, only in this country everything is in accordance to the racist policies that has been use to oppress and suppress people of color all over the world. However, the African-Americans cannot move on in life without directing or redirecting everything to the victim attitude. Due to that centuries old attitude, we cannot see the goodness of people beyond the count of melanin they have. For example, a lot of you think that if you’re mix, we feel superior to any darker complexion. I never met or befriended any mix person that think that way because I know for one if I think in such manner, my parents will whoop my behind. Also, if you go through majority of the past BLACK inventors, leaders, pioneers etc. are of mixture.

I am very proud of my heritage and my ancestors. I owe it to them everything that made me who I am and what I have become aside from GOD. I was thought from a young age that I need to know everything that makes me who I am because my NANA used to say, “YOU WILL NEVER GET TO WHERE YOU GOING UNLESS YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHERE YOU CAME FROM.”I truly believe in that old adage because as a mentor and leader for under-privileged kids (note that I am not privilege myself, I am blessed. It is my duty to share those blessings with the younger generations and the community), I have learned that the only thing they know about being black is the color of their skin, what the media shows including BET, MTV, rappers, athletes etc. and two pages of African-American history from school. With that being said, you cannot tell me that anyone mix or all black will not get lost in the white system. The problem with our community is there’s too much negative culture persisting and dominating that our attitude and characters exudes negativity. The solution, which my friends and I had concluded is create programs and attitude to counter this giant negative culture that runs havoc in our communities. In which, it shows on here with some of the comments and blogs. It is very disheartening to read some of the comments for the fact that some of you guys never took the time to ask mix individuals questions that pertain to this issue. Instead, people assume and speculate without first hand knowledge of our feelings, how we are brought up, family, friends, morals, values etc. All the assumptions and speculations comes from your first hand experience with the white system, not us not our humanity not our soul not our spirituality etc. Have any of you guys ever thought that maybe some of this mix individuals (mostly unaware of their history or just confuse) that their decision comes from the pressure of the white dominant society that WHITE IS RIGHT AND BLACK IS NOT???? Rather than demonized us, why don’t you guys question the type of society we live in??? And please a bi-racial president will not do anything to solve this issue in our community, lets face the fact on that.

(This is in general, not everybody). My friends and I have come to grips that the African-Americans are the worst kind of black people on earth, but not their choosing. This is why? Black people around the world from the West Indies to the Pacific, never called each other niggass, and never took the time to make any excuses to why it’s an affectionate greeting. Why do I and we say this because Black folks who migrated here did not even know the word n****r as a daily verbiage except in its negative usage and roots. Then the newly migrated Blacks use the word niggass because of the excuse that it is cool. African-Americans are the only ones that has been strip of everything, and by mean of everything; culture, language, spirituality, humanity, health, Afrikan morals and values, even traditions, etc. Therefore, most of their characteristics and the aforementioned are dictated by the white man and conditioned by the white man. For example, African-Americans look down on blacks from somewhere else i.e. Puerto Rico, Brasil, Republika de Dominicana, Jamaica, Trinidad, Belize, Guyana, Philippine Islands, Palau, Fiji, Samoa,other pacific islands, Southeast Asia, Australia, even from different countries in the continent of AFRIKA etc. This is not saying that one is better than the other. However, because of this, it is safe to say that Black citizens of this earth will never be UNITED AS ONE.

My only problem with this “bi-racial issue” is that bi-racial people who are light skinned can get away with this classification easier. Darker skinned individuals get cast in the black category no matter what their racial identity. Having studied genetics i know that racial identity is not cut and dry or as easy as black and white. I have more European ancestry than many light skinned people i know but because I am dark skinned I am told that I am “just black” as though i could never have any other ancestry. It’s too bad being black just isn’t good enough. We always have to have “Indian in our family” The fact of the matter is anyone with African ancestry is considered black, so be proud, study your history maybe you will find that you can be just as proud of your black ancestry. Everyone is mixed with something.

But when the Police continue to harass you, and when the Koreans continue to watch you in their stores, and when the KKK doesn’t notice that “White” part of you but instead sees that natural tan you’ve got going on, then you’ll think differently.

I love how topics of “bi-racialism” and mixed ancestry always bring out such controversy and rage in black folks and often more comments on these boards than other subjects. I’ve been dealing with it since I was born and the controversy just won’t die. I always identified more with my black heritage but I tell people Im bi-racial mainly because I was raised by my white mother and her family. I would never disrespect that side of my family because to her credit, at least when she could have abandoned or aborted me and no one in her community would have raised an eyebrow, she made the decision to keep me and raise me. That’s more than I can say for my black father who never tried to help raise me or financially assist us when I was growing up. He never even visited. I know my father’s side of my family but I don’t always feel welcome because I’m kind of seen as a dirty secret since he was dating both his current wife, who is black, and my mother at the same time when I was conceived. My half brothers and sister don’t talk to me and when they do it’s with condescension. With them it’s just as much personal as racial.

My point is that every person of interracial heritage has their own reasons for preferring to identify as “multi or bi-racial or “other” or black. It’s not up to anyone else to define them. The real irony is that alot of black folks want to claim “other” people in this debate when it’s convenient for their argument but within the community, we’re sometimes still looked at with a slightly jaundiced eye as not being “black enough”.

It breaks my heart to see that some brothers and sisters still don’t feel like part of the family. Personally I dont care what they look like. I have to admit I’d never mistake anyone in this video for white though. It’s who you are as a person that really matters. You are a person of color be proud of that. It is the strength of your character that is truly being tested. So when you are confronted with ignorance be a credit to the human race and your maker. Evidently it is your part, your cause, handle it with dignity, love, patience, and firm intelligence!

I am kind of in the dark as far as this topic. I did not know this was a big issue, please excuse my ignorance. This issue this separation to me is just like, i dont know what to say, this is the type of thing that each person going through similar situations needs to reaserch or maybe there parents should have researched. The way that i cannot hide or put away my blackness, you cannot hide the fact that you are of mixed race… you are bound to that for life. Believe it or not…Interracial relationships and biracial children are nothing new. I guess for the under 25 year old crew that might be a “shocker”. But people like Frederick Douglas, Booker T Washington, Rosa Parks and many others were products of Black women and White men. Yet, these individuals were very proud of their African heritage and went on to do great things for the Black community.

generally, i get along with everybody, regardless of race/color/ethnicity. i think my personality facilitates that more that my ancestry does, but that also goes to show that its not always about what you look like. its about who you are.

funny thing is, ive been ridiculed and taunted by black people more than any other race. once they find out that im part-white/mixed (not part spanish/hispanic, as most assume due to my complexion and hair texture) the “white” jokes commence. ive been told i act too white because of how i talk (im articulate), how i act (apparently i dont act black enough), and sometimes how i dress (since when does wearing what you want define your race?). if i “act white”, so what? it is, after all, part of who i am.

i dont like to be labeled as either black or white (even though the latter is rarely a term im identified by), because im not either black or white… im both.

i would never, ever deny either race. if you cant accept that, its your problem… not mine.

The parents of the child that said she was embarrassed when her mother came to pick her up because all the other girls were white,needs to make sure that her child stay surrounded by both races, thats where the identity mix up comes in, when you cling to one side and not the other and try to act like one side and not the other. Build a high self esteem in the children so they wont be embarassed (but proud) when the mother shows up.

As a bi-raicial and bi-cultural person (Latino/Black0, I most closely identify with being – both. Outwardly, I’m obviously mixed, but I socialize with mostly Blacks – however, I was raised in a speak-no-Ingles Spanish household, completely immersed in Spanish culture and with very little contact with my Black/White father. Hell, I didn’t even have a plate of soul food until I was 26 years old – dayum shame I know, but tortillas, rice and beans were staples in my home.
