WASHINGTON (AP) – The euphoria over President Barack Obama’s inauguration is giving way to political reality for African-American lawmakers as Democrats grapple with stubborn challenges facing a long-awaited domestic agenda.

“There is more recognition that this president has been in quite a political battle this year and it’s likely to continue,” said a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, Rep. Artur Davis, D-Ala. “There’s certainly a sense of pride and accomplishment, but there’s also a sense that gains that were hard-won can be easily lost.”

Obama, who is scheduled to address the CBC’s annual legislative conference Saturday night, belonged to the all-Democratic, 42-member caucus before winning the White House. The only senator in the group, he wasn’t particularly active and isn’t especially close to many of its members.

Questions remain about how hard Obama can fight for the anti-poverty, education and health care proposals that helped him win near-universal support from black voters. There also is a growing realization that he will likely face years of criticism – some of it motivated by race – over his administration’s response to a sour economy and other issues.

Some in the CBC acknowledge Obama must govern more from the center to be a successful president. However, many of the group’s more liberal lawmakers expect him to seize the opportunity created by strong Democratic control of Congress to push through initiatives that have long been blocked by Republicans, such as public health insurance and sharp funding increases for urban development.

This is particularly true as the economic recession takes an outsized toll on black communities.

“We want him to stand strong,” said Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich.

In a conference call recently, Obama reminded CBC members that most of them represent politically safe districts, and that Democrats must look out for the interests of vulnerable moderates to maintain majorities and achieve their goals.

The CBC conference draws thousands of elected officials, business leaders and other professionals from around the country.

So far this week, the White House has gone out of its way to reassure them that it is committed to generating new opportunities for minorities. Along with Obama’s Saturday address, the administration dispatched a team of Cabinet secretaries to earlier panel discussions to highlight initiatives for creating jobs, improving education and preventing home foreclosures.

“It’s still very early and people are hopeful that things will get done,” said Valerie Maholmes, a behavioral scientist from Washington who was attending a Thursday session on rebuilding the economy.

Many attendees said they remain incredibly proud that the nation elected a black president and are optimistic about the future, despite the economy.

“I think for the first time probably in the history of America the black community feels they are in a position of power,” said James Bryant, a union leader from San Francisco. “I think African-Americans think there is no more wall.”

Bryant and others said they anticipated that Obama would face fierce resistance from the right. But some said they don’t understand the intensity and sometimes personal nature of the opposition.

the cbc is a bunch of useless people looking for attention and a job outside of tricking their own people to keep them in power. these idiots went to Cuba for no other reason other than attention and to show some sort of affiliation to communism and dictators, what the heck does that have to do with black people in america. now they expect the president to give them unlimitied funds for their districts, well what have they done with past funds? they never get anything doen in their districts because they have no business knowledge and they drove a wedge inbetween the law enforcement and the citizens rather than creating a bond.I dont see why we need them if they dont do anything, its sad but many cities run by blacks are run into the ground by corruption,detroit,K.C.,L.O,.we must start electing compitent, resourceful, educated, business minded people regardless of color to achieve what we want out of society.the days of vote on black has done nothing for the elevation of black people because our politicians want to keep us in the ghetto rather than help us get out.

Will someone please tell me what is the black agenda? Why are people coming out of the wood work with all these “Black” issuses? President Obama can’t just buss out and say “I’m here to help all the black people, because I’m African American.” The man can only do so much! DAMN
Now Mr Conyer’s speaking up with his fool of a wife taking bribes and acting a plum damn fool at her ex-employment on the Detroit City Council. People need to get there own houses in order before speaking up.

If they STILL don’t coincide – I think we all know the answer 2 that. He has 2 cater to the national agenda= he should incorporate the “black” agenda w/the nation’s agenda – s**t we have one? Where can I read it? -

Its sad enough that eva since they let slaves free we had to prove doc**entation for our rights or just to prove that we can handle being a citizen of the USA. Its also sad that in any kind of work force SOME white people feel that black aren’t fit for the position. And for our own people to be as undermined as SOME white people we could neva work to gather because most times their just as worst as SOME white people. My generation aware and seen 1st hand of people who wish not to work together but my generation know that we want change for the best of this nation and the cycle of not doing anything but complaining is done. We are to grown to play childish games America.

I honestly believe that we shouldn’t have a “black” this or anything. if there were a “white” organization, we’d call up racism. I don’t know how these few think they represent “black americans” I didn’t vote any of these people in anything. If we fix american problems, then everyone will be better off. I would like to see christianity out of our black communities though. Hell, out of all our communities so we can have one less thing that divides us and makes us belive people can walk on water. We need to focus on ourselves as U.S. citizens before black people or we will be constantly chasing an agenda that will further divide us as a country. I would knock Donna brazile down though! Intelligent, funny, analytical and got a nice chest. complete package.

This site always ask the dumbest questions. Of course he shouldn’t cater to the black agenda, and by catering to the nation he gives blacks the opportunity to run in the future.

OMG – so glad to read most of these posts. Why does the media continue to try to fuel the race issue? That question was ridiculous.

For the record, the President is biracial. Until people can acknowledge facts like that, the race issues will continue. (Cam-n-millie makes a good point!) I understand, growing up, most of the country looked at him as “black”. I understand the old “one-drop” rule, but it is 2009. We need to celebrate each other for every part of our backgrounds. I *happen* to be of mixed European descent (not my choice – I was born into this life this way!) – my heritage is what it is – I can’t change it. When people can stop saying “black” or “white”, and instead, can proudly say “I’m first & foremost an American. I am also of African, Caribbean, Jamaican, Irish, German, French, etc. descent”. Or, better yet, “I’m a human being, equal to all other human beings!”

When you young, poor and in need no one is there. When you come up and become a President now their hand is out like you owe them. Similar to your family expecting you give them money when you hit the lottery. President got 99 problems and the CBC ain’t one.
