And I can tell you for a fact, they went through much more then I or any other person that pledged. It wasn’t nearly as “regulated” as it is NOW. So you’re wrong on that point. @ shampelle and jazzpast. Please do your research. Historically Black fraternities and sororities are not black greek organiztions. You will never hear a real member of any one of the D9 say this. The founders chose to use greek letters for a reason. Most of the 9′s history and principles stem from Africa. Furthermore, all 9 were started in the face of adversity as a means to bring other Blacks together and effect change and they did.
Somewhere along the lines, the values have been misconstrued.

You are right @ everymansdream…im sure all of them are not the same but i do know some people that only wanted to pledge so that they can say they were in one or go to the parties and are popular..also some do it for the perks they get from the brotherhood and sisterhood but i guess you are right that I really don’t know the debt of these groups..I was asked to be in one the other day though…lol i might just take them up on it as long as they are respectful and have a vision i agree with.

I still feel the same way about black schools though…i would never attend one because it is overated as hell!

Imagine what kind of person you have to be before hand in order to need to be beat down to become better. I come from a greek legacy family and I also decided not to pledge. My family has told me many times that things got worse when pledging was banned in 1990. So yes the process has changed since MLK’s day, and so has the membership- any member that has been in for a long time will tell you this. No one ever wants to point out the succesful A.A’s that are in these groups and did not suffer abuse (i.e honorary, grad members) I mean seriously the first black president clearly did not let someone bust his butt and neither did his wife (who was offered honorary membership). I like how everytime this stuff occurs people always scream its “isolated” yet more and more cases are happening. But yeah, let’s all pretend that nothing is happening… no skin off my nose. I agree with all the comments posted on this topic. I fault the sorority because they know better, the members need to take a look at their own mission statement. I fault the girls because no organization is worth taking any type of abuse, and they need to evaluate why they would want to be part of something soo bad they would allow someone to hurt them to the point of risking their lives. It makes me upset because I can reflect back on my own experience of crossing, there were certain things I wasn’t going to allow, and I let them know I wasn’t going to do certain things. As a result, it made me very unpopular in their eyes but I had to realize that I have my dignity and they didn’t help me in my career or financially. Like someone posted earlier these organizations dont have the same purpose they had in the past. You dont have to join an org to do community service. I’m in the healthcare profession and I serve my community on a regular basis.

@north, Membership has its priveleges HOWEVER you get out of it what you put in. Work for the organization does not really begin until after college graduation. There are some that join for the wrong reasons and I can assure you they didn’t cross or they’re not active now.
Fraternal life has nothing to do with party strolling or sitting on the yard. That’s the perception of nonmembers!!! It’s an unshakeable bond that can never be broken. It’s kind of difficult to explain. I am proud to say I am a sister to Shirley Ceasar, Nikki Giovanni, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Barbara Jordan, Mary McCloud Bethune and so on. I encourage you to visit the hall your school may have set aside for fraternities and sororities.
I love my sorority and would not change being a member.
