U.S. states whose residents have more conservative religious beliefs on average tend to have higher rates of teenagers giving birth, a new study suggests.

The relationship could be due to the fact that communities with such religious beliefs (a literal interpretation of the Bible, for instance) may frown upon contraception, researchers say. If that same culture isn’t successfully discouraging teen sex, the pregnancy and birth rates rise.

Mississippi topped the list for conservative religious beliefs and teen birth rates, according to the study results, which will be detailed in a forthcoming issue of the journal Reproductive Health.

However, the results don’t say anything about cause and effect, though study researcher Joseph Strayhorn of Drexel University College of Medicine and University of Pittsburgh offers a speculation of the most probable explanation: “We conjecture that religious communities in the U.S. are more successful in discouraging the use of contraception among their teenagers than they are in discouraging sexual intercourse itself.”

The study comes with other significant caveats, too:

The same link might not be found for other types of religious beliefs that are perhaps more liberal, researchers say. And while the study reveals information about states as a whole, it doesn’t shed light on whether an individual teen who is more religious will also be more likely to have a child.

“You can’t talk about individuals, because you don’t know what’s producing the [teen birth] rate,” said Amy Adamczyk, a sociologist at the City University of New York, who was not involved in the current study. “Are there just a couple of really precocious religious teenagers who are running around and getting pregnant and having all of these babies, but that’s not the norm?”

Strayhorn agrees and says the study aimed to look at communities (or states) as a whole.

I’m not going to say that teens are GOING to have sex…but I’m saying we need to teach our teens about the consequences of sex. It’s as if they know how to make a baby..but not the consequences of it. Unprotected sex can cause STD’s and unwanted pregnancy. The thing about teen pregnancy that most fail to realize is that while the mother may have given birth to the child, most often the responsibilty of raising the child will fall on the grandmother. Most of the time the young girl still lives with her mom, she is probably too young to get a job and if she does have a job it’s probably a waitress job or a cashier. Hopefully she’s still in school.

Studies show that teen mothers are least likely to graduate high school. Their children tend to be born at a lower birthweight, which is mostly due to the mother’s body which is still developing.

We need to be realistic. If we teach these teens the consequences of having unprotected sex. If we teach them more than what happens between a sperm and egg and teach them what happens when the egg turns into a fetus and the fetus grows and the montary costs and the emotional toll of this, maybe the teen pregnancy rate will decrease. Babies need alot of love and cost alot of money.

that’s really true. another thing also is that in religious states, most parents believe that if they talk to their kids about sex, they’re going to want to do it and go all out with it. and then when the parents find out that their baby girl got pregnant or their son knocked someone up then they’re going to be disappointed.

i think that’s one of the things that’s wrong with this country, parents don’t talk to their kids about these things enough.

A big part of the problem in those states is abstinence only education classes
in stead of traditional sex education classes. Children need sex education with proper condom use, birth control, STD’s, with abstinence as one the pieces.

see there is alot of brainwashing going on in church. sorry all. god, they say frowns upon birth control. so you know they would never get an abortion. all of that is spoken against in church. even if you can’t feed these kids you are told to bring them into the world anyhow. also the media plays a big part. making pregnancy look glamorous. like it is cute to be an unwed mother or father in hollywood. also women are also taught nowadays to have a child “by any means necessary” you are less than a woman if you do not have a baby. woman are even called “selfish” if they chose not to pop one out.look at what octo-mom did. no daddy or hubby but a house full of kids.. i have girls and i talked to them. i let them know it is ok to be selfish where YOUR body is concerned. if you do not want children do not bring them here. i told them to practice safe sex and to be careful.. i would also love for them to marry before they make me a grandma.. i was not married i listened to society.. sometimes its easier to say wait for marriage before sex but in this world today it does not happen that way.. at least seldom..

To Missjessicica, I wish you well in your report and maybe you can find something that will help. Also I do think that if this number are dead on, it is probably because the parents or trying to keep things from their kids and the world show their kids stuff that they parent don’t but the world does not explain everything. I think some religious people are still growing and dealing with stuff and don’t know how to talk to their kids about today’s world that is more challenging than what they had to deal with. Also some could be trying to hide things they are ashamed of and just hope that maybe if their kid does not know they will not make the same mistakes. All of this reasoning is pretty ignorant though.

I am not surprised at all by this.

I hate to be blunt here. But from what I’ve noticed throughout every source of information, regardless of the race-dominated or even class associated media, it is all the same. It is all vague. Journalists and newscasters are simply ”dumbing down” Americans. Articulation skills and intellectualism is well behind in the average American corresponding to those in the rest of the developed and developing world.

For example, you could talk to some Midwestern factory worked who’s survival is his union. Yet he hates ”socialism” – the core principle of socialism, and freaks out at the sight of hearing it, because his media has progammed him to feel that way. Another example is the average American not knowing that ”Hispanic” actually is not a race, nor an ethnicity, nor does the rest of the world hold it to that. The language someone speaks can’t dictate someone’s ethnicity. If that were the case, French-Canadians and Hatians, both Francophones, would be apart of the same ethnicity.

Yet Americans feel it is okay to ”assume” what someone is in reporting missing persons cases based on a language? Pretty sad, right? Here is one more example. People aren’t able to articulate Barack Obama’s ancestry and his actual identity. Before even talking about her mother being white, let’s look at his father. His father is from Kenya – about as east in Africa as you’ll get. There was no slave trade there. As most Americans don’t know (and African-Americans are no exception), but should know, Africa is the most ethnically diverse continent on the earth. Barack Obama’s ancestors never experienced slavery, segregation or any harsh treatment. In fact, he was born in Honolulu, one of the few cities in the U.S. with a half a million people that is less than 2% black. Living in Indonesia, a Chicago suburb, attending Columbia, Harvard and living only around rich people (mostly whites) since his late-20′s hasn’t exactly left him to live around many African-Americans. Yet he is ”African-American”, why? Because he said he is as a tactic of politicking? And the media pushes along that message? And why do Americans believe it? Because they’re brainwashed, have a low intellectual capacity and love to simplify? You see all my points here?

Listen, one thing you’ll know about traveling this country is the way how the average American is portrayed on TV is not how the average American sounds or looks. To say the least, there is a lot of ”white trash” and ”black trash” across the country. Personally, it’s a lack of a better term, but I could care less about political correctness. With that being said, our trashiest parts of the country are what is mostly centered. Mississippi is apart of that.

As mentioned by the author, this is a pattern. The pattern roots out of poverty. Baptists are probably the poorest Christian denomination in the U.S. That is the most common denomination of African-Americans, especially southerners, and is also prevalent among white southerners too. The most African-American region of the country is the south, particularly the deep south. The region that is most baptist and has the highest military membership is this same region. One thing you know about soldiers is they get married and have children young. So they’re used to seeing young women with children – usually by themselves, especially if they’re husband is off in Iraq or Afghanistan. This is all poverty associated. Poor parents can’t teach poor children if they’ve made the same mistake their children have made. It does not take much to wear a condom. Or to take a pill at CVS 24 hours later if you screw up. Some religious yahoo or the children of one probably won’t be doing that in Mississippi though, right?

This country is all about class distinction. If there is any group that has the most class distinctions, it is African-Americans. Middle class African-Americans resemble none of the commonalities of poor African-Americans. The problem is the poor eat up a large proportion of African-Americans, so it can lead to misleading stereotypes. 26% of African-Americans are below the poverty line. About 1/5 of black men in America have incarceration records. Is it that hard to put two and two together? Most to nearly all black Americans who have criminal records are below the poverty line, had children out of wedlock, have little to no skills and parents who fit this categorization too.

What poor African-American parents need to do is stop being p*ssies. Get in your childrens face. If you can’t handle having children, don’t. African-Americans have an identical fertility rate to that of whites and the national American average, so it is not a matter of having more children. It is a matter of irresponsibility and a dysfunctional culture that has developed within poor black Americans. They’re the ones who can change this.
Personally, and I feel this to all poor Americans, it’d probably just do all poor people better if people below the poverty line don’t legally be allowed to raise children. Yes, they’ll be missing out on that dysfunctional sense of love. But you know what? They won’t turn out being a loser just like you.

    Sorry for being blunt.

Well said. You do not have to apologize for being blunt as one of my mentor in Europe said, we will always be learning to the day we become dust. I see exactly what is going on here in the states but sadly some people still have not educated themselves to understand how to overcome the problems in the communities. Like I said in another post it is parents duty to teach their children not teachers, doctors or the states.
