“Precious” paints a picture no less damaging than, say “Pretty Woman” (a movie glorifying Whites as w***es and ‘johns’).

All “Precious” does is shine a Flashlight on what could happens any day in America. That is exact definition of “Art” in some circles.

I think Blacks as a whole are just too sensitive about ephemeral things. People get jaded from hearing us say that everything is so ‘hurtful’ that when something REAL comes up, they just disregard our feelings.

I say just let the movie be what it is: successful.

Stop creating drama where there is none. The true conversation should be about how to curtail the “Precious” situation from even happening to our people in the first place.

I forgot which movie it was, but I was traumatised at an earlier age by a film starring Whoopi and Oprah about a man who was abusing women and children. Now I believe these films damage families by causing mistrust of adults including parents, and we now where that takes children if they refuse to attach to their parents and elders.

Look at this story bellow and ask yourselves how man Hollywood movies dedicate stories to an abusive Rabbi?

@Johnny Walker QUOTE:”…The true conversation should be about how to curtail the “Precious” situation from even happening to our people in the first place.”

AMEN! Why does it appear that as a group we are always “REACTING” to items after the fact vs. being PROACTIVE in developing strategies that make us HAP-PY?

For example: PUSH by Saphire was published in like 1996? The movie hit the Sundance film festival in like 2009 and in March 2010 black folks are suddenly upset that white people recognized and awarded the story artistic praise? Are we believing that prior to 2010, this story did NOT exist? Is this one of those awkward situations where we are not upset or concerned until white people recognize our talent? Where were these discussions in 1997 when PUSH was making sales in book stores? We did not care because we DON’T READ?

I read the book in 1996 in my book club; however, I did not see the movie yet. However, I am just trying to comprehend what is the root cause for all of the March 2010 uproar. Are people really upset because of the win because folks seemed AWFULLY QUIET WHEN IT WAS ONLY A NOMINATION…IMHO.

you know what i really don’t understand? is there are africa-american men on this post that saying it’s ‘just a movie’ and and actually praising this crap…yeah this happens in every community…but for some reason when it comes to the black communities…only the negative roles are ‘awarded’ ‘praised’ and depicted…at least tyler perry shows both sides of the spectrum…there are professional black people in the world…all of us are not drug dealers, addicts, w***es, or welfare recipients…. so you guys keep letting society define you as inferior and ignorant and virtually less than human here? because the only thing oscar night suggested to me again…was that you have a black ignorant welfare recipient that is abusing her daughter and letting her daughter be abused only to be ‘saved’ by the white woman…and you wonder why other cultures and countries that know nothing about our race…thinks that you are inferior and not worthy of respect…so continue to ‘praise’ and support the bulls**t!!!

I, for one, did not like this movie at all. I thought the portrayal of this horror, directed by an openly gay Lee Williams was an attempt to advance the homosexual agenda. If you notice Paula Patton’s character was gay and Precious went to great lengths to say “you never heard of a gay person abusing their child”. Further, almost every straight person in the film had the morals of a large German Sheppard.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/SomeKindaFine/ SomeKindaFine

@blkman, totally agree wiyh you. saaphire, the author of the book is a lesbian who admires Alice Walker and the Color Purple. The Color Purple also promoted homosexuality and Ceilie could only find tru love in a relationship with a woman. I just recently found out Alice Walker and Tracey Chapman dated for 7 plus years. All of these male hating tragic black stories are part of the homosexual/feminist agenda.

OMG — Black folks are truly crazy
This book as well as movie was based on a time specific – 1986
During 1986 there was the following:
    Generational welfare
CRACK was destroying the urban communities
Schools in NYC were absolutely horrible.
    High Unemployment
    High Dropout rate
    and I can go on.

This movie and book was based on that period. During that time you didn’t see tons of black women working the same types of jobs they are now. We have gained strives, and Hell I live in the community this was written about and Hmm guess what – it’s not as bad as it use to be but there are still people who live like this.

Its really sad but people would rather look away and blame the victim then address the issue. We live in a society where people are like – I got mine you need to get off of yours. Well — that mindset is the reason why we are in this situation today.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Rod_Slider/ Rod_Slider

See? Glorification of an EXTREMELY bad case of poverty, highlighted by all the negativity possible of a woman in that position. Why couldn’t we see an award for positive black portrayal? Like in….oh yeah, not many of those. Black leading roles in a major film? Survey says….nope.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/fnyclightskin/ fnyclightskin

Lastly, I think black folks perfer to only see their image in a positive light. Which is why Bill Cosby (Cosby Show) did so well.

on a segment of everyone hates Chris they did a skit where Chris met the Cosby’s and when he said what his parents did (the fake Cosby’s) turned their noses up. FOlks need to get over it..

There are people who are just common hard working folks not everyone is a dr. or lawyer.. hell they might just be content with being a janitor. And YES — there are children who were raped by their parents.. and 1986 – 1994 devasted the black communties.

Right now folks are questioning why there are so many kids who have issues and Hell these kids are the crack babies.. And crack dealers kids…and instead of people trying to solve a problem they once again want to point a finger and DO Nothing and say.. I got mine you need to get yours.. Sad society we live in~

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/doing_me74/ doing_me74

Positive image of black folks so how is that going to solve problems because on the real people are afraid to face reality because these same people talking positive image be the same people you see on the streets looking down black people who aint got it like them. All the so called positive blacks are frauds fuk them.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/single_409/ single_409

They go on and on about “Precious” but why wasn’t their any hoopla about “Sybil”? Precious could be any girl with abusive parents and an extremely hard life. The characters played by Mariah Carey and Paula Patton could be an person who truly cares about a life. I’m so sick of this being a so-called “Black” issue. Why is it that people can’t see that this is happening and do something about it instead of play the race card 24/7?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Jahz_Lynx1/ Jahz_Lynx1

At Johnny_Walker, If we want to curtail the Precious syndrome, we have to go waay back in history and allow all the free laborers [slaves] to earn a livable wage. That way they could pass down a little wealth with each generation. Then you’d have to allow parents to love and raise their own children without making the kids debt commodities. The psychology behind detachment stems from the constant fear of losing ones mind after the child’s been sold off. We have multi-generations of displaced hate due to the adapted behaviors of slavery. Thank goodness not all of us endured crazy mothers, but alot of people did. Growing up, most Dad’s were the ones to fear, they had a reason to wake up angry everyday. But I only knew of one crazy Mom. She’d burn her daughters legs with scalding water, she said it would prevent white men from raping her little girl, even though she only did it when she was pissed at her husband or angry drunk.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/angelarnold20031/ angelarnold20031

WHY was this made into a race issue???? It has NOTHING to do with race….its a story about an abused girl. It happens ALL the time…in every race and walk of life…not just black and poor. The upside is that Precious overcame that obstacle and had the help that she needed.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Cynthia54now/ Cynthia54now

This Movie was about a CHILD who was abuse by not only the MAN but her MOTHER. This happens to all PEOPLE. And it will have an effect on all PEOPLE of all RACES. And if it has a effect on BLACKS LET us PRAY that they learn what not to do or let happen to THEMSLEVES or THEIR KIDS. Can we take making eveything out to be about RACE it was a movie about LIFE no COLOR should have been seen just the movie in it self.

i dont understand why; MONEY; when producers such as oprah and tyler perry, set out to make movies, they make s**t like this!…..havent black people had enough movies made about us that show how horrible we are to each other……..personally i have had enough of o and perry….and if someone like spike lee gets critcized for calling a spade a spade, tyler perry is a coon, then what is the problem with spike telling his opinion? everyone else seems to be able to express their own…precious was a prime example of a movie, although reality based, was really made for white people to “connect with black pain” or something like that, i think?……. but how many white movies do you see the white characters portrayed so animalistic! a goddamn horror movie…..thats what!…….and precious is definately a horror movie!……… check the facts! ……..when black people win oscars, it aint for beauty and finesse…its for murdering cops, mammies, dumb welfare w***e ( halley and monique) and just plain n****rish roles…whoopie!…….mr poitier hadnt done a movie in years and won a life time achievment award on the same night washington got best actor for playing a thug, renegade, gangbangin, drugdealing, drug doing cop! ………….what kind of s**t is that folks? ……white people only give us crumbs!….. “take what you need from the system”………we best be about taking our s**t and setting up our own shop…cant oprah and tyler do that? ………..if they wanted, they certainly have enough lootcakes!………..

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/thisisboots/ thisisboots

also……..all these people, mostly black women, who are saying that this shouldnt be about race, are just plain screwed up to begin with……thats why the movie was made….to put a stain on black families…raping, hiv having, low life boyfriend\father………..welfare, useless, abusive mother…….wayward, illiterate, obese daughter…what the hell are you people defending this movie smoking? ………can you send me some?…….this movie was made for white people and black women so that they both can further stray away from the truth……that the black family has been under attack since the whiteboys stared taking our ancestors from afrika……….AND IT HASNT STOPPED PEOPLE……….STOP THE MADDNES!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/reticence/ reticence

First of all, the movie is not portraying Black families…it is portraying the cycle of poverty and abuse. These things happen all over America and it is time for us to realize that there are plenty of children out there, whether Black, White, Hispanic that experience poverty and abuse everyday. ANY CHILD can be Precious!! Whether you like it or not, it happens in Black families too… Stop bashing something that is representative of a subculture and making it come to light. The subculture I am speaking of is that of abuse. This movie speaks to that culture and makes it known.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/phrisskee/ phrisskee

I am touchy too when it comes to how WE are portrayed in media. However this story is too real for many of us to stare into the looking glass that might just stare back at us and remind us all of our shortcomings. The main point whether we are touchy, embarrassed or proud that “our ” stories are being told is that OUR STORIES ARE BEING TOLD. They dont all have Happy Endings. Its not Walt Disney and the 50′s where it was all about Leave it to Beaver, Andy Griffith, or I love Lucy where N’are, I said it, N’are a Black face was shown let alone had a speaking part or an entire project based on US. As a rising actress I need material, no I dont want to be marginalized to the point where I am cliche’, a stereotype or just a token. I want stories and dramas that show the full spectrum of who we are. All our blood is red and we feel pain and experience painful events like ALL cultures do. Lets remember how far we have come before we criticize any art that does what art is supposed to do-enlighten, provoke thought and discussion and yes imitate life.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/SonHassan/ SonHassan

I think we need to stop worrying about what white folks think of us.Situations like “Precious” don’t happen in every black household, but it is a “purposely isolated” issue that needs to be addressed. I hope this movie will perhaps trail blaze a worldwide discussion to the physical, verbal and sexual abuse of children.

What none of may know is that white also been enslaved from their own Queen in England centuries ago also to add the white men sold their own children into slavery by betray them as Mulatto. So why don’t the average white nor black understand stop playing the victim and be the victor. All we see on this garbage tv is filth and so why do we bother to indulge in this filth when you know it wrong. Stop watching BET also Music Award crap which i hate simply because you are WORSHIPING IDOL GODS STOP IT STOP IT.Read a dam book and learn something about real culture not this ROOTS that you spending money on wasting your tax dollar meanwhile the white people are saying look at these dumb ass n****r who just breaking their necks to give us this money back.

you know and i thought a while back tyler put out a message that he was in no way shape or form associated with this movie…because i just have never watched any one of his movies that had such a negative portrayal of black people…i mean he shows the stereotypical character….but he also shows the professional or the ‘positive’ character….which doesn’t necessarily have to hold a degree or even a diploma…but they are positive hard-working people…do you guys know how many ‘victims like precious’ suffered the same atrocities and completed high school or college and became successful? thousand and thousands of people…why aren’t their stories ever told? that’s what i thought it was gonna be about….i left the movie theater feeling like i had just watched a horror film!!! i swear this was like watching Armageddon!!! seriously…you know the comet is coming to just blow your ass away!!! i’m just highly disappointed in oprah and the rest of the creators of this film…i mean be who you want to be…lesbian, straight, gay or whatever…BUT STOP SLAMMING THE BLACK MAN!!!!

okay…so the book was based waaayyyyy back in 1986? So why the hell damn near 30 years later…and since then mind you more blacks have graduated from high school, and college, have gotten good jobs…got married had kids…divorced… remarried, fought in wars, have homes, apartments, condos, nice cars and so on not to mention a black president to boot and all these people came from the same background as precious…in God’s name come out with this bulls**t now???

Oh and just to add. Nobody seems to want to see movies of Black people doing or good or even Black people working normal jobs in a middle class setting. Not even Black people seem to want to see a movie about other Blacks doing well for themselves.

no you’re misreading me…i said just the opposite I AM TIRED OF WATCHING ALL THE NEGATIVITY…even in the 70s from what i understand remember james from good times? he left that show because the evans’ could never get out of the ghetto…idris elba left the wire because he got tired of being portrayed as a drug dealer…both actors went on to play positive roles or at least in movies where they show both sides…because i’m a realist…seriously…i know that everybody doesn’t live like the cosby’s but there are so many of us that don’t and never will relate to precious, american gangster, training day, the wire…and the list goes on (it would take up a whole page!) i agree with you there are black that don’t want to see blacks doing well or at least trying to better themselves or their situation…it’s called that stockholm syndrome…or better yet..just a dumb jackass!!! i just get angry when people like oprah that have that much power, money and influence continuously make movies that make the black family look like damn fools and the black man likewise…i mean i think most of us are intelligent enough to accept whatever she might be without all the subliminal messages…i mean if homosexuality is their thing that created this movie then so be it…i mean come out of the closet please!!! but stop bashing the black male and the black family life!!!

All I got to say about the movie Precious is that-it do happen in all race of people. Do this make me-one of Precious? No!. Do this movie speak of me?No it don’t. Its was a different out look of how movies was being put out and it was something we all can agree upon that-it do happen and its not just the black race but,in all race of people.(JMO)

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/candyrain/ candyrain

*What has to be understood is that…Precious was an adaptation of the novel Push written by Sapphire. Its not like Oprah just dreamed up this movie to paint Black women or Black people as a whole in a negative light. Also…when white people do movies like…Brokeback Mountain, it is not look upon as homosexuals being shown in a negative light.

That movie was looked at as a “Breakthrough” as far a social acceptance of homosexuality. Crazy as it is most “negative” portrayals of African-Americans in the cinema, media or otherwise is the “norm” for some, because it somewhat more relatable and its what some see most of the time. That’s not to say that there are not positive portrayals, but we are conditioned to go by what we normally see and “HATE” on when we see positive.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/DameDivalicious/ DameDivalicious

Here we go again! More whining about Precious making the black community looked bad from the elite. First of all I don’t have a Ph.D like these people but common sense is what I lived by. Until I see these people do something and not just talk about it to encouraged those in the black community who thinks there is no hope or no one give a d*mn about them then they are not wasting my time. There is so many black communities that are crime ridden, falling apart, lousy schools, gangs, etc where those who lived in trying to make a better live for themselves and children. They can’t afford to move out because rent are to high in nicer neighborhoods, wages too low, generation after generation are drop outs, never worked, can’t get a job or living on welfare long terms. It goes on and on and what do we see happened when someone come along saying they will get it all fix? Nothing! Action speaks louder than words so this professor is wasting too many people time. I know people at NYU but to talk about one movie to the mainstream media and nothing else that I mention before just make you wonder what’s wrong with this picture. There are some in the black communities who done good on their own but there are some who can’t manage, don’t know how, been trying, have no family or just don’t give a d*mn as long as they can eat.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/jones197/ jones197

When are we going to get over ourselves it is no longer the white people holding us back, its our own black people. Because black people were whipped as slaves, they have passed this same mental bondage along from
generation to generation. I’m afraid of what Master is going to think.
And I got to do what’s the Master and der Missus tell me to do. I don’t want the Master to know I am black, because I am pretending to be white, he might whip me.
Precious is a beautiful movie which they tried to stop from being made by saying all kinds of lying things about it. Everyone should see this movie and make it a family event for ages 7 years old and above. The movie comes
straight out to talk about abuse. Everyone of all nationality and color has had some kind of abuse to happen to a friend, family member or seen some talking about it on T.V.
It is time to stop sweeping the s**t under the carpet and everyone start being truthful and honest about what is going on in this world. We have to make a stand against all kinds of abuse.
STAND UP AGAINST ABUSE NO MATTERS WHAT KIND IT IS! Women and children need our help.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gail_Brooks/ Gail_Brooks

But don’t you understand that both sides need to be told? Name one academy award that went to a black actor or black film that was positive? Tyler Perry to me is as real as you can get because he tells ‘both’ sides…i’m not knocking the fact that the teachers in the movie were lesbians…but they were also ‘trained’ teachers that know what when and where to look for abuse in their students….no one is doubting that abuse happens…but what is it saying the child that has never experienced abuse? the ‘whoa is me mentality’ only to have the white person ‘come and save me’ is tired and has been for a long time!!!! move forward!!!! i mean someone said the movie almost didn’t get made…i mean the book is almost what 25 years old!!! this was not the first book written about sexual abuse…there have been thousands since then…but i guess those books also had too many positive people for the creators of precious…they had to go way back to find the most worst characters they could find and even added a new twist with the lesbianism…so like i said this is 2010 and most of us are intelligent and sophisticated enough to accept all lifestyles… and if the agenda was ‘pushing’ the homosexuality agenda then like i said before i would so much rather for them to just come out of the closet and stop being ashamed and bashing the ‘straight’ society that they fear would ridicule them….and this professor is right…and what is this s**t saying to young black boys and men? that’s my main concern…again…tyler perry gives you a choice…you have the stereotypical character and then you have the positive character…it’s free will…not in every one of his movies, like oprah…he is viewed as a damn animal…whatever damn problem she has with black men…she’s got enough money to work through those issues with a psychologist…hell she knows dr. phil give him a call!! i’m just too through with oprah..sorry…

    just my opinion.

Ms Antonio is not in touch with reality. This movie in no way made black women take a step back or degrade. It told the truth about what goes on everyday. And as for black people being degrading blacks, i’m sorry PROFESSOR but if you can remember white men started raping black women a long time ago. And believe me there are more white girls being raped by there father, grandfather, uncles, brothers and the like. Black women are being exploited throughout the world and all we can do is sit back and laugh cause people want us to feel bad and we don’t, or at least i don’t. They dogged Jesus out and everybody cals on him. Black Women continue to love YOU!!

    ?

but anyways…yes…white women are being raped…but in those movies there’s always a support system…there for them…not every which way they turned there was just another idiot standing there…what the argument she is making which is a valid point…is that no one is doubting that abuse happens not only in the black race or other races…but their are never positive images of the black man or the strong black family unit shown…call it a cliche but this is true…because believe it or not there are black people that live normal and productive lives everyday.
