SAT Test

From the Washington Post:

Roy Freedle is 76 now, with a research psychologist’s innate patience. He knows that decades often pass before valid ideas take root. When the notion is as radical as his, that the SAT is racially biased, an even longer wait might be expected. But after 23 years the research he has done on the surprising reaction of black students to hard words versus easy words seems to be gaining new respectability.

Seven years ago, after being discouraged from investigating findings while working for the Educational Testing Service, Freedle published a paper in the Harvard Educational Review that won significant attention.

Text continues after gallery …

He was retired from ETS by then. As he expected, his former supervisors dismissed his conclusions. Researchers working for the College Board, which owns the SAT, said the test was not biased. But the then president of the University of California system, a cognitive psychologist named Richard C. Atkinson, was intrigued. He asked the director of research in his office to replicate Freedle’s study.

Now, in the latest issue of the Harvard Educational Review, the two scholars who took on that project have published a paper saying Freedle was right about a flaw in the SAT, even in its current form. They say “the SAT, a high-stakes test with significant consequences for the educational opportunities available to young people in the United States, favors one ethnic group over another.”

“The confirmation of unfair test results throws into question the validity of the test and, consequently, all decisions based on its results,” said Maria Veronica Santelices, now at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile in Santiago, and Mark Wilson of UC Berkeley. “All admissions decisions based exclusively or predominantly on SAT performance–and therefore access to higher education institutions and subsequent job placement and professional success–appear to be biased against the African American minority group and could be exposed to legal challenge.”

SAT is used mainly by East Coast schools. Midwest schools don’t really judge your aptitude by the SATS… If you are good at cramming without learning, you will ace the SATs… It’s an exam designed to test how good you are at passing an exam… Nothing to do with learning at university…

None of brilliant minds of the earlier centuries took the SATs and that’s probably they were able to think freely rather than being taught what to think…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/_A_/ _A_

AfricanSpeech you are dead on. In fact, most testing in schools falls into that same description. But if anyone recalls, this subject was dealt with on an episode of Good Times, back in the 70′s when young Mike Evans failed one of these aptitude tests because of something similar. He got one particular “match the items” question wrong, with a tea cup. The right answer was tea cup and saucer, but he had marked tea cup and table, because they weren’t using saucers in the hood. This is an interesting study though, and really only confirms theories that many of us subscribe to anyway, that racism is an institutionalized practice. I would love to see the differences in scores with Mathematics, and see if low income whites fell in line with blacks or middle class whites with respect to their scores.

The SATs are just horrible…This reminds me of the B.I.T.C.H test (yes its real!) that proved that black people CAN perform better, but the way they word questions is confusing. I wholeheartedly agree. And these tests are just stupid.

hmmmm how the f**k is a test biased if its based on information that is supposed to be taught in all schools?? why are we not attacking the problem of why arent my kids prepared to take this test and the kids across the tracks are?? if we worked more on educating our kids in all genres and not just whats needed to pass an equivalency test then we would be much better off… i do know properly funded suburban schools tend to teach their kids to be leaders while underfunded city schools or “urban schools” tend to teach kids how to be laborers or workers and thats something that needs to be addressed more so than sum “racist” test…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/odoggz/ odoggz

I agree with Hersey1, and due to the invention of Twitter and texting, it’s only a matter of time before whites join us, in low SAT scores. I had no problems with word definitions on SATs, or the SSATs. My strength was math, and the verbal, although a pain, I did fairly well on, too. I mean, you bought books and studied dictionaries to learn words, you also learned how to eliminate bad answers, so I thought grammar was the greatest problem for blacks. That’s what I did, I prepared. Many others just decided to wing it, thinking their school work they did, everyday, prepared them. lol Still, I don’t know about the vocabulary being racially biased though.
I saw grammatical structure (on the test) that I used everyday, in the hood, so that would make me think “Oh that’s the correct way to say it”. I saw a lot of it, and knew it couldn’t be correct, and sure enough it never was. lol They’re have the equivalent of “How that there?” or “What they be doing over there?” and at that time, I felt they were trying to fuk with me, personally. lol That, I can agree is racially biased, if you spoke ebonics, you would get tripped up for sure. However, vocabulary being a racial issue? I don’t think so. White people aren’t widely using the big words I saw on SATs, or in the damn spelling Bee’s, or we wouldn’t be so surprised that little kids can spell the words, but not have to define them. So I don’t get how vocab can be racially biased, I think many just don’t prepare, nor have an understanding on how good colleges would accept you.
The trick to the SATs though, is somewhat foul, if you’re a non-white minority and you do well. If you scored high, you get a lot of acceptances to good colleges, BUT YOU DO NOT GET A LOT OF SCHOLARSHIP MONEY, especially if you are coming from out of state, to the college!!!! They label you like you’re from a well off family, because you did well, and kids with c- averages, who score 500 on the SATs, get the most money. So I knew many people who didn’t bother to study like myself, because they got in programs like H.E.O.P. which gave you full scholarships and book checks, and I couldn’t get into the programs because my grades were too high. WTF? So SATs worked against me, just like when I got good jobs, while in college, I got less scholarships since student payment system recorded that you made a certain amount of money, so you get LESS for your scholarship, the following year! That sh1t is a trap to keep you down, for sure. Don’t do well on SATs and don’t get involved in a job where the government knows how much you make, or just don’t get a job, and you’re golden, full education paid!

I don’t know if the SAT’s are racially biased or not. I agree with AfricanSpeech to the extent that if you are good at cramming without learning, you can do good on the SAT’s. But then you have to ask, if that is the case, why can’t black kids cram and pass just like white kids? And although it can be viewed as an exam to test how good you are at passing an exam, it can also test a students knowledge of the material.

Even though I didn’t do my best, I did fairly decent on the SAT back in ’98, but not because I crammed without learning, and not because I was trained on how to pass an exam. I’m from the east coast and my school did spend a couple weeks of our junior year preparing for the practice, or PSAT, but I was familiar with alot of the material because I took Regents and AP courses, and I worked hard at being a pretty good student. In fact, I didn’t even attempt to study for the real SAT until the night before, and I fell asleep after about 30 minutes. I remember waking up being a bit nervous that I hadn’t really studied, and my nerves caused me to overthink and skip questions that I actually knew. (And even though a blank answer is better than a wrong answer, I still could’ve done much better). But the fact that I paid attention through high school and actually knew most of the material helped me get a decent score, even though I wasn’t completely confident. ( Out of a possible max of 1600, I scored 1150 total- 620 math, 530 verbal).

    @ _A_

As for the math scores, somebody posted some of those stats for different races in the comments section under the main story when you press the link for “Click here to read more”. I’m not sure if those “stats” are accurate or not, but you might be able to google it just to double check.

There is another interesting argument pertaining to race and scholastic achievement that maybe even more telling, and I’ve witnessed this way back when I was in high school.

This might sound stereotypical, but we’ve all been in school where there are those REALLY smart Asian and Indian students. The argument goes that those kids are children of immigrants who come from a place where there is an EXTREME value placed on grades and work ethic. In those families and cultures, kids are forced to study rigourously and ANYTHING less than an A is UNACCEPTABLE. I think the proof is in the pudding of rankings between American students and students in Asia and India.

For white kids, their parents also instill a high value on education, but the demand is not as great. Generally a B average is acceptable. Of course, we all know about plenty of dumb white kids (and asians, for that matter) who skip school to drink, do drugs and party, and become complete f*ck ups in life. But according to this argument, this is based on cultural generalizations.

And in the black community, in general, there is the LEAST amount of encouragement and value placed on education. Again, this is a generalization that does sound very stereotypical, but I am black and I’m from the hood, and I witnessed it with my own eyes. Even in my own family, many of my cousins were slackers in school and only did the bare minimum because my aunts and uncles didn’t press the issue. They frequently failed classes and attended summer school because the only instruction from their parents was, you better “pass”, while very seldomly were they deprived of freedoms or privileges. And that’s the problem. Not all, but many black kids (and parents) think it’s OK to just “pass” with C and D averages.

Once again, NewsOne mistitles an article.

The opinions of a couple scholars is not evidence. They’re just opinions. There are probably thousands of others scholars who will say that the SAT is not biased. So, if we’re counting views as evidence, there is more of it that way. Blacks should spend more time studying and less time making excuses for their shortcomings…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/bvince/ bvince

I easily aced my SAT but I went to a all-white school so it was easy. My first year in college was pretty much the same work I had in high school. The school system does not prepare black children for college. It seems they prepare them for a life of servitude or prison life. I work around a lot of white people and think to myself “how did you get through college”? I don’t want to use the word ‘dumb’ but man……the cerebral knowledge is sorely lacking.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/odoggz/ odoggz

    @Ceyisha
First, college, is just another scam, in the USA. Just another way to swindle people out of their money (behind a false dream), get you buried in debt, and doesn’t promise you a stellar career when you’re done. Most people are not even working in the field that they have a degree in! Sociology majors plague the McDonalds franchises, as fry cooks and cashiers, today. lol Also, more women going to college has nothing to do with black people’s issues. Men, have the option of getting into jobs that require tough physical labor (construction), or jobs women wouldn’t ever do (plumbing, sewage treatment, etc), as well as the many other jobs that women do too, so he doesn’t necessarily need a college degree to work a ‘job’. You don’t need a degree to be in the military, policeman, guard, etc, which are fields dominated by men. THAT is why men are not in college not because of SAT scores.
Many of our people, in the states, don’t have degrees, and don’t need degrees. A degree is just a piece of paper (just like marriage), and most educational institutions teach you to memorize answers, not think for yourself and be dynamic. You can learn all you need, online, or in books, and be successful. Business is not hard, it’s just very time consuming. These people, who are successful, but don’t have college degrees, are EXPERIENCED, came up around people who taught them the ins and out, and hands on experience is better than a pencil pusher from classrooms, in ANY FIELD out there. College does not mean you’ll be rich or have a successful career, that’s as bullsh1t as the American Dream. You might need a degree to be a doctor or lawyer, but unless you’re working as just another cog in the machine, for a company, that requires you to show you have a degree, to fit their corporate image, you don’t need a degree. The head of Enron dropped out of college, Bernie Madoff went to college he couldn’t run a business, Sports Athletes don’t all complete school, entertainers don’t, etc… Do hear how Magic Johnson speaks? Sounds like an idiot, did graduate from college, but he played basketball. Well the guy is a killer businessman, not because of college, because of the exposure he got to real people who know business! College doesn’t determine crap, so the attendance of women, in college, has crap to do with the topic, or even racism.

This is complete BS. I know there will be people on here who will be quick to say “see the man is keeping us down”, its a cop out. You notice the article gave no details on HOW its biased.

When I was in HS I scored 1350 out of 1600 on my SAT. I went to one of the ghettoest (is that how that’s spelled) schools in Miami (Carol City) and if you are smart you will do fine because you have common sense.

I remember an episode of Good Times that mentioned this. The youngest kid got a bad score on some state test and they claimed it was biased. The example was “if a friend spends the night, where do they sleep: (A) guestroom, (B)on the couch or (C) in the bed with you. I Think the answers were something like that.

The kid answered (B)”on the couch” because that’s what he was used to. But that’s stupid. Common sense would tell you that a guest room is for a guest even if your family doesn’t own a guest room. So don’t tell me these test are biased, people just need an excuse to no do well and blame it on the man.

There are alot of REAL problems in education like black schools getting less funding and supplies and such but biased tests are NOT one of em.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/xPeter/ xPeter

Well how do we account for such a high percentage of black Africans who are on the college campuses and not making the same claims??? Dam-It just learn the test!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/billy-danze2/ billy-danze2

As far as people claiming college us a scam, well that’s just sad. I went to college and go an AA and a Bachelors and working on my Master’s now. Before I even graduated with my BA I landed a PT job in my field (Public Administration) once I finished the bachelor’s they moved me to full time.

I have I’m in my third semester of my Master’s of PA and the head of the department (planning and zoning department) asked me how many grad credits I had. I told him I had 15 of the 33 towards the Masters’s and 9 of the 15 towards my grad GIS certificate, he hold me to let him know when I had 18 credits towards the masters because he would give me first look as team leader for a small group of junior GIS techs (4 guy). So don’t tell me college gets you nowhere.

If you’re studying philosophy or some field where there are 10,000 other people studying it then yea you might not be making the move you want but that’s partly because you chose something that either not in demand over over saturated. As far as the debt in most cases you’re gonna come out owing something, but if you’re smart or low income you go
    for little or nothing.

Between my AA and my BA I think I paid 500 out of pocked over 4 years. My employer does tuition payment up to 6 credits every term, but even if they didn’t the grants and scholarships I have still cover about 70%. College is a scam only if you make it one.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/billy-danze2/ billy-danze2

Agreed. People quick to claim “we need to stand up and have our own” and all that but they don’t even stand up and admit “we did bad on the test because we didn’t study/use common sense”.

OH I know where the sociology majors are, because I was poking fun at some of my boys! LOL I mean, to be fair, only 1 is cooking, but not at McDonalds, at some family restaurant, and a few others are managers and such, still they’re in fast food chains and Verizon stores, not making the most of their degrees. I was recruited, to work for a major firm, in my JR year of college, and I didn’t take the original offer to work full time, because I couldn’t possibly work that job and finish my goal of getting my degree. I was double majoring, and the compromise was I’d work part time, and I focused on 1 field and finished school. I could have left school, like a buddy of mine actually did, and he took the opportunity. That startup blew up, my boy got rich (only fulltime employees could take advantage of the stock options), I was temp. He’s super rich now, I’m not (but I’m good to go than a mofo), he has no degree, I do, how do you weigh who got the better deal? OH wait… HE DID! lol The good thing is my connections, including the one with my boy who left to work for the company, are strong. My dude who left to work, he hooked me up big time, with many well-paying gigs (because he passed a lot of projects/tests due to me giving him my work for him to alter and pass off as his own). Cronyism works, not bullsh1t degrees! lol And another thing, people are geting PHDs and it’s in BULLSH1T. You can get a PHD in pet care services, today.
    @Jazzwatch
OH it used to enrage me, every day, just realizing I was almost paying full tuition, and I was dead-broke-poor, yet because my grades were high, I couldn’t get good financial aid- yet here were all the black scholarship fund counselor people, handing out dreams and free passes, to the dumb, black kids (who just wanted to play basketball, do drugs and bullsh1t on campus all day not actually study), and COULD NOT HELP A BROTHER OUT who was trying to be someone in life. Freshman year, grew up/ woke up quick, and to this day, I’m still furious! It was all a sham, and no matter what schools I looked at, it was the same deal everywhere.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/flutterbyfli/ flutterbyfli

…and even the commenters here who take issue with this article have to admit that within our community appropriate value is not placed on READING as a valid and fulfilling past time… I do agree that the purpose of standardized tests is suspect and that college education is more of a business but none of that overshadows the fact that too many adults(in addition to the youth) in our community view READING as a boring, tedious corny activity that’s acceptably ignored. You can learn vocabulary, writing skills and all kinds of information whether you want to or not from reading FICTION so add in non-fiction and you can practically educate yourself in certain fields. We need more coincidental education in day-to-day life that sparks the ability to make connections because this is really what standardized tests measure. So no matter what the system or institutionalized education does to “hold us back” we do ourselves a greater disservice when we choose tv, video games and other frivolous activities over READING.

So the study shows blacks don’t do well on the verbal part because the test is biased. How do we explain the lag on the math part? The SAT has been a very good indicator of how students will do in their FIRST year of college. That doesn’t mean everyone who does well on the test will do well in their first year or that everyone who doesn’t do well on the test will flunk out their first year. But it does a very good job.

I didn’t do that well on the SAT, but that was my own fault for not preparing for it. Plenty of black kids who were in the same school, in the same classes as me did much better than me. We need to stop looking for reasons as to why something is against us, and start holding ourselves to higher standards

I just wanna say—that although college is a scam, that doesnt mean you use it as an excuse for not making the money you want. Everyone knows what money making majors are, and if you chose another path—really who can you blame?

Another thing—YOU are supposed to make your degree work for YOU. A DEGREE is USELESS without motivation. Get and intern/externship while IN COLLEGE. RESEARCH the career you want. TALK with people who make the highest in that profession ETC. DONT just say college is a scam and thats why I failed. I guarantee you THATS NOT WHY. IT may be a scam but LEARN the ways of it.

And JUST because you did well on an exam DOES NOT mean its ‘not biased’. I got a 720 out of 800 on the english part of the SATS. In urban city schools Im sure that is NOT the norm. The SATs should not be used to measure intelligence. But it is—It should be eliminated COMPLETELY.

A degree is proof that you followed something through to the end… That’s all… Ask any body in the industry and they tell you to forget about 80 to 90% of what you learned in college…

Which other business would someone ask you to pay upfront for benefits you may never see…

If a degree is useless without motivation, they need to put that on the disclaimer, LOL… Then people can buy their degrees without wasting their time, LOL…

I agree with you Digg. Every person that is a U.S. citizen knows the ACT and SAT is biased. But what’s new? Nothing is going to change.

@Quiet_storm: I agree with you one thousand percent. Black people need to stop making excuses for our lack of effort learning the basic grammar we use daily. The study only looks at one part of the S.A.T. and not the whole test.

@ Jeffrey: I believe the test is not bias, we have different grammar as races but that do not stop other ethnic groups from doing well on the test … now why is that? What are they doing that we are not? Oh yeah studying and learning for a test, practice makes prefect.

Take a step back and look at everyone we deal with in our day to day life, then look at the world around us. Many of us don’t see past the city we live in and the rest of the world continue to past us by because WE don’t want to do what we have to do in order to make our life better.

Wait … wait … yes we do, when we are older over he age of thirty trying to catch up on all the past years we decided school wasn’t for us now WE including me, have to work our @ss off to have a better life because we didn’t want to work hard when WE were younger.

Hello people stop with the excuses!!!!!

All the more reason why I am considering homeschooling my child. I want him to LEARN, not be conditioned to what people want you to know. Digg is correct; nothing is made with us in mind. Black people cannot even learn OUR History ( HIS-Story) We come from great thinkers, and creators… Not BS!!!

    Pink Diamond, good points!!

African Speech, good points as well. I work in the industry and i will say this. If there are two people applying for the same job or promotion with equal capable skills, the one getting the job WILL be the one with the degree!!

Education Is the key, but the TRUE facts behind it must be addressed; like that crap about Columbus Discovered America…….if such crap we learned as a child was percieved to be true and then turned otut to be false, then people will ge turned off of learning the TRUE stuff; the SAT score determines what colleges to go to, but cannot guanrantee you a job when you get OUT of college…..

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/AfricanSpeech/ AfricanSpeech

SAT scores doesn’t provide the scholarship money for you to go to school unless you fit the underachieving black male stereotype who is good at sports…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/alanidmc/ alanidmc

I did well on the SAT, but I’m not going to say that it is totally fair for everyone simply because I did well. There are always going to be some people who do extremely well and some who do extremely terrible, with most people in the middle. That in itself doesn’t indicate whether the test is good or bad.

But if there is a disparity in scoring between entire groups of people, whether it’s black/white, men/women or whatever else, there’s some problem somewhere, whether it’s the test or the people taking it, and investigation into the problem and reforms where necessary are wise.

I aced the SAT and the GRE even though I was not even from the US.

Does that prove anything? No… It just means that if you are good at cramming and guessing you will ace multiple choice exams. It has nothing to do with intelligence…

I was teaching a lot of folks in the US in college when I was back there and I immediately saw what was wrong with the US education system and I hadn’t even been there for up to 5 years…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CaliFemme23/ CaliFemme23

SAT’s aren’t brain surgery, I mean multiple choice? Seriously? LOL..
When I was a social worker, I met plenty of college drop outs, fck ups and people with criminal rap sheets thicker than a dictionary that aced the ‘tests’….The SAT’s mean nothing…
