We often hear about how we shouldn’t rely so much on credit. But rarely do we hear the other side of the story – the fact that many of us could no longer qualify for more credit if we wanted it.

Just a few years ago, lenders were handing credit out like candy – in the mailbox, at stores, on college campuses and through subprime mortgages. Heck, I even know 5-year-olds who were offered credit cards through the mail. But if banks are at fault for giving out credit consumers couldn’t afford, we have to take some blame for spending what we couldn’t afford. Many folks (myself included) once used that credit as an excuse to spend more than we earned. The end result? An economic meltdown that’s caused consumers to default on their debts – and scared banks to get stingy with future credit.

So if credit is so dangerous, what’s the problem if we have less of it? Because our economy needs some credit to get back on track.

Some lending is necessary for people to buy houses, get car and start businesses – the kind of investments that make the wheels of the economy turn. It’s about balance. We have to rebuild our credit enough to stimulate lending again – but not so much that we end up right back where we started, drowning in debt.

You might not be able to control the economy as a whole, but you can start by fixing your own financial situation. If you want to repair your credit, you need to show you can manage what you already have. Instead of cutting your cards up, start paying them off on time. You don’t need to use credit to show you can handle it – just keeping a zero balance is proof that you can manage an account.

Now, I realize that paying the bills is easier said than done, especially when you’re dealing with the situations that land most folks in debt – i.e. high medical bills, a lost job, car repairs, just to name a few. But by paying down debt, you can free up extra cash to help pay the mortgage, utilities, gas and groceries and all those other necessities. One of the most effective ways to do so is bankruptcy.

If you’re in debt, you already have a form of consumer protection. It’s called bankruptcy, and it’s your legal right. Filing for Chapter 13 can stop foreclosure, protect you from creditors and re-organize your debt so you can afford the bills.

Good article. We must learn to stop buying cars with 24″ wheels, jewelry and clothing, among other stuff on credit, that we can’t afford, to impress people we don’t like, that go out of style in months. This is why I think the recovery is taking so long. Black people aren’t out there spending money foolishly like WE used to!. When I charge something, I pay it off and get furnishings, laptops, TV’s and pay them off interest free in so many months, which is the same as cash. I shop for clothing off season. I may be wearing last years clothes and driving a 4 year old car, but I don’t have bill collectors calling my house or job, and I can travel and take vacations when I want to. I have been there and it ain’t a good feeling! And ladies, how many purses and shoes do we really need????? LOL

As someone who works within the industry, this article harps on the basic principle, of which most knows already, on how to solve you credit problems.Whether pay on time or file for BK. Well, most people doesnt know that the credit system is an institution created to put the masses in financial enslavement not much difference to sharecropping. When one pays her/his minimum monthly payment, one only acc**ulates more debt thats why when you look at your statement there wasnt much of a difference except you felt good that you paid your bill on time. Remember, that payment that you have doesnt cut to the principal. You are rather just paying the APR, in which only helps the rich gets richer. The reality of credit cards is, you are in debt to the institution for most of your life if not all your life. Therefore, WOULD YOU RATHER BE OUT OF DEBT AND OUT OF THE SHACKLES OF THESE INSTITUTION OR YOU BUY IN TO THE SYSTEM THAT WILL NOT HELP YOU ATTAIN YOUR GOALS???

also, be informed that if you are over 50% of your credit limit that will reflect as a negative to your credit score. Dot believe that you need to be maxed out and late on your payments in order to receive a negative score. That’s what uninformed individuals will tell you in order to make you feel good.Credit card companies have so much clout in bringing in laws that are biased to their industry, which is GREED.

BK should be your last resort if you exhausted all your options and your debt is killing you, literally. Remember, that BK’s will be on your record for 10 years. Yes you can get credit even with a BK.However, think of some present circ**stances in your life that will affect your future before taking that step. For example, if you are going back to school and needing a loan i order to pay for all your fees. Be aware that institutions except the government Pell grant, will likely look at that BK as a negative. Same goes if you want to start a business etc. Also, be informed that your credit score doesnt rely on how many credit cards you have or how much is your credit score. One credit does the affect on your credit score as 3, 5, 10 credit cards.

If you want to know some solutions and other options to get your credit in order or pay your debt within TWO YEARS. Go to my page and leave me a message. There are ways to build your credit without killing yourselves, and we can also go deeper.

“the credit system is an institution created to put the masses in financial enslavement not much difference to sharecropping” Truer words have never been spoken. This is the reason financial responsibility is NEVER taught in schools. CC companies thrive and survive on the individual’s ignorance. You almost need a degree in Finance or Law to understand the contract they send you. As the old saying goes, the devil is in the details. Instead of just signing that new card’s contract, try reading and understanding it. These days, you can easily find an online source to assist you with it.

This bad economy has done one good thing: It’s shown people how stupid it is to try and live beyond your means.

I rarely use my credit cards, and I pay on time. If you can’t afford it in cash or can’t afford to pay it off in a few payments, then leave it in the store.

One thing not mentioned is that if you don’t use credit cards, your credit score will be lowered. If you have paid off all your loans and pay cash for everything it will be even lower. Who cares, everything is paid off and I am not renting from the loan company, it is all mine.

Stop spending your money with people that dont look like us.
Buy only what you need, and very few want’s.
Remember this cash is king, during a national emergency, ATM’s will not work and stores will only be able to handle cash, so save up some cash for the hard times that are coming in the very near future.
