If you thought slavery or human exploitation was over, think again.

Many human rights organizations are condemining what they call human slavery in which Wall Street investors and big companies are investing in the prison industry as they don’t have to worry about strikes, vacations, compensation time or unemployment insurance. They dont have to deal with sicknesses or lateness. Many of these prisoners are threatened with solitary confinement if they refuse to work for these wages.

This also makes it very clear to people that there are more incentives to lock up people in this country. The US has become extremely attractive to companies who would usually use labor in 3rd world countries. They now look toward prison wages for all the advantages they offer a corporation. The U.S. is 5 percent of the world’s population, but comprises a quarter of all prisoners in the world.

Check out some random facts about the prison labor industry and some of the companies involved in it.

  • Starbucks contractor Signature Packing Solutions once hired Washington prisoners to package holiday coffees as did Nintendo with their Game Boys.
  • Microsoft once had prisoners shrink wrap software
  • In Texas, inmates produce brooms, brushes, bedding, mattresses, toilets, sinks and showers.
  • Dell once had inmates recycle PC’s but a watchdog group pprevented them from doing so because it would expose inmates to toxins.
  • Inmates have also produced missile cables. They also cut aircut components which pay them 7.00 an hour when on the outside union wages would be 30.00.
  • California inmates sew their own garbs.
  • Prisoners in Wisconsin once helped build a Walmart in 2005 until community uproar halted the program.
  • Prison industry pproduces 100 pct of all military helments, ammo belts, bulletproof vest, etc.
  • Private prisons pay from 93 cents to $4.73 per hour.
  • Federal prisons pay from  93 cents to $1.25 per hour.

I have always referred to the justice system as the “Criminal Justice INDUSTRY. Any black man who is foolish enough to allow these people to get a hold of his body still has an awful lot to learn about America.

Yes it is slave labor. Slave labor is what america is all about. america was built on slave labor and Black america is their permanent underclass. Screw america, dirty country.

I understand what you’re saying , but once you get one felony the system starts closing doors on you.Regular things like renting out apartments in non-ghetto areas and getting jobs becomes a difficult task.Thats why a life of crime becomes the norm for most with these types of issues.

Wait so we are supposed to feel sorry for them? What kind of democratic liberal bulls**t is this? What about that raped grandmother, that little cousin who was assaulted, the shots that got your friend instead of its intended target, the little mf that broke into your car, the thief that took your stereo from your home.etc.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mypinion/ mypinion

Just like another posted stated. If your foolish enough to let these people get a hold of you, you have a lot to learn. But not only that, you are a fool and you are a slave and your foolishness will keep you trapped for the rest of your life. See they do crimes and they get off. They are never labeled. Look at Tim Allen, a convicted drug dealer but he is not labeled a drug dealer or a felon. I don’t even know if he was charged with a felony. However, he is still at the top of life.
You can’t do that. Teach your children because there are actually people who are paid to plot how many black men by the age of 6 or younger who will end up in prison. They are called actuaries. If you don’t believe it look it up. Actuaries are paid a lot of money. google it.

Yes, prisons are slave camps and the people there are treated like slaves 100%. Your told when to rise, when to sleep, when to eat, when to go to bed, etc.
But once you get out of prison, your never free. Any crimes that occur, they will always look at you. Quit not caring or being fools and thinking it is not going to happen to you. As surely as you do any crime, they are going to get you. There is too much technology and your the main back bone for a whole industry of workers and not to mention the wardens who come out with the fatest pensions you have ever seen.

Teach your kids to avoid this and the seriousness of crime and prison. You will not get a smack on the hand like them. It will haunt you and keep you trapped forever.

It Would Be GREAT if men who worked whatever kind of detail (Regardless) of what the pay is gets credit for time served, more credit for working a job, get a certificate, get job references, paroles, get’s record sealed, being he/she has paid their debits to society. Fair is Fair! How can inmates be punished twice? He/She as served their debit to society! Let them be free & move on in life!

Most prisoners prefer to work. It gives them a chance to get out and get involved in something. There are guys that learn how to bake cakes & bread and cook so when they get released they can work in restaurants and not go back to prison. When I was in jail, guys would compete for the opportunity to work. I didn’t need to since all charges were dismissed after an entire freaking YEAR! Why? because I refused to pay $30,000 for an attorney or pay for anything else. They had me locked up with no evidence whatsoever, and when they saw that I didn’t pay a dime to bail out of jail or hire an attorney, they let me out and dismissed the charges. They never said anything to me whatsoever after my release. I found out that the charges had been dismissed by looking at the court records on the internet.

what the f**k are ya’ll talking about? if your ass go to jail you get 3 meals medical insurance somewhere to sleep all off the taxpayer dime for a crime you committed hell yea get that labor out that ass… i go to work everyday to eat & have insurance for me and mine so should they. as a matter of fact if you get incarcerated and have kids you shouldnt even get paid the money should go to your kids hell you dont need jordans in jail! everybody talking this slavery s**t okay i get the relation but slaves werent brought to america after committing any crimes these individuals were. if you dont think the s**t right dont get locked the f**k up simple…

Trapped for life couldnt be emphasized more than with this type of situation. When i caught my case in Arizona for assault i was looking at a felony and 10 years.. that was just the legal talk.

I ended up only staying in jail 2 days with a misdemeanor and a year of probation.People think i got off rather good.Talking to many Blacks with felonies they dont see any of this as a problem.I now have to explain this s**t for life(and in my case i was railroaded) and ill have trouble getting back into nursing school.Anything they can label you with to affect your livelyhood they will. The best way to hurt a person is through their pockets.

If a person can only get a minimum wage job or no job the’ve kept you right where they want you to be at..Jail cant possible be for any normal person.Rappers have made their millions glorifying jails and ghettos.Lets stop using them as examples of what should be considered normal.

I have no sympathy for prisoners but this activity should be illegal. Any money made should go back into the prison system;therefore, helping reduce the cost to taxpayers. Companies should not be allowed to makes money off the prison system.

  • http://twitter.com/Shangrilatida Shangri La

I would rather see them pay a debt to society while trying to become a better person, whether they leave jail or not. It serves no one but the greedy and underhanded to use free/slave labor to make themselves richer. Remember, there were hardworking, honest people outside of prisons who used to do and support their families with those jobs. Some still have not found jobs to replace jobs sent overseas and inside prison walls. Prisoners can do somethng better for humanity than fattening the pockets of the greedy. They care about us on the outside of prison, just as they do those inside of prison.

I am sorry to hear about your situation, Tish and I commend you for telling people what they need to hear. I argue all day long with people on here obsessed with what goes on in DC when the real battle is to get our young to stop glorifying “thug life” and to understand that when you catch a felony case, you’re getting much more than jail or probation, you get a whole set of “collateral consequences” as legal scholars call them (no vote, no job, no public aid, no education aid) that locks miilions into a life of low wages or crime. This is where the real battle is for black people, we need to stop being “legal slaves.”

This is all part of the “American” system to maintain an underclass and slave system based on race. Even though the Black police officers association, many black lawyers, and organizations across the country tell us that whites are selling & consuming at least at much dope…..THE WAR ON DRUGS IS A WAR ON MOSTLY BLACKS AND MEXICANS, WE GET ARRESTED THE MOST, AND GO INTO THIS DEFACTO SLAVE SYSTEM.

THIS CIRCULAR SYSTEM SET FOR MINORITIES SEEM TO BE THE REASON MOST STATES WON’T LEGALIZE WEED, WHICH MILLION TIME LESS HARMLESS THAN TOBACCO CIGARETTES. THEY WANT TO LOCK UP, RUIN THE FUTURES, AND CREATE SLAVES OF MILLIONS OF BLACKS THAT HAD 20 DOLLARS OF MOFO WEED OR OTHER DOPE.

Your dumb cracka ass is so intent on being racist and upset that God gave you a little dick that you don’t see how this affects white people as well as all American citizens. Time Wise, a white man, did say that you idiots are too busy being racist and bigoted to realise that you are being screwed just as much as other black people when it comes be exploited by the rich. Look dumb ass, the jobs that they give to prisoners are jobs that should go to all Americans.
Why am I telling you this. You are probably too dense to understand and just some 17 teen year old reject who only has one loser friend and no girl will even talk to you so you try to come here and troll against black people so you can have someone to feel better than. Pathetic!

Some of them do. It’s worth the risk if at least one prisoner is successful… If one black man can find a job and stay out of prison it makes a difference to the one that succeeded. My friend in New Orleans making good money and just had a baby girl last month. All he needed was a second chance.

Excellent observation! I never connected the reason to keep weed illegal and the criminal/prison industrial complex. Yes, they need to keep weed illegal so they can lock up people for it; keep lawyers, judges, upstate, depressed town economies thriving and now corporations with cheap labor. america is such a dirty country. facist. totalitarian america.

My question to everyone who is against convicted inmates working. What exactly do you think a grown ass man is suppose to do all day workout, play cards and dominos and have sex with each other? I’m confused aren’t they supposed to be punished? How is eating three meals, free health insurance playing games and sleeping all day punishment for a BUM (y’all call them thugs).

    Let’s not forget that:
    1. All slaves weren’t black. Most of em yes, but do your research. Chinese, Irish, Latinos ect all played a part in slave labor.
    2. All inmates are not black. Most of em yes, but ALL prisoners go through that mess.
    3. All inmates are not hardcore criminals, most aren’t even in jail for murder. And probably does not deserve that harsh a punishment.

A personal question for you, have you ever been locked up? Or even gone through the whole court process? Minorities is the cattle of upscale America. For example: Were supposed to be in a recession right? When the new Tim Duncans came, brothers don’t have no money for food, bills, nothin. But they had that 300$ for dem shoes though. That’s what I mean. Generations as a whole see lil Wayne as there father figure and get locked up chasing a life style that means nothing. In a country where jobs are scarce, you can’t blame anyone for selling drugs to feed their family and support a household. White man figure lock him up so he can make tennis shoes for a dollar an hour, then we take em and sell em for over 200$. No need to give em a job, just a cell and 3 plates of oatmeal. That’s how they plan on gettin out of debt. Yea “our” taxes pay for all that not their taxes. If you Owned a company , would you want to put out 5 mil a year on employees or 1 mil a year? Consider thinking about the things the average American is too caught up in the brainwash to think about. That’s Illuminati.

  • http://twitter.com/Vanity357 Vanity357

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/koolios2050/ koolios2050

I’m not against anybody working, especially someone who is guilty and convicted of a crime. Because punishment does not work, but work does.

The more important point here is the numbers that are put out, and the numbers that aren’t put out by this article. The main point here is that the prison industry is growing by leaps and bounds CAUSED by the desire for cheap, almost free labor. This is one of the reasons why the U.S. has the highest incarcerated population in the world. This is also one of the reasons why we have such harsh and unnecessary penalties for relatively minor crimes. This is also why we have such a huge population of our minorities in prison. The industry is feeding itself, and has found a convenient way to do it to make money for themselves, and damn the rest. Black men and other minorities have the highest incarceration rate, and the unsurprisingly the highest false conviction rate. DNA evidence has turned over many cases but they are never shown the light of day. Black men also have the stiffest penalties for matching crimes. All of these things serve to merely bolster the prison-industrial complex. This makes them more powerful, and the vociferous agreement that we have to the work gotten out of these (many wrongly convicted) “BUMS” means that the system grows, making it more and more likely that one of us will be the next one snatched off the street to feed the machine that we are in such favor for.

Once again, my point is not that prisoners should not work. They should work. My point is that instead of falling back on our default positions from this article, we need to check the causal links and understand that modern day slavery is the point, and unless something is done to revise the ridiculously anti-minority (ethnic and otherwise) pro-business partnership the prison system has imposed on our government and us, then we might be the next one stamping license plates and making money while someone on the outside who doesn’t know the numbers and the truth damns us with their words

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/freelancepimp/ freelancepimp

I can’t believe how many of you are missing the point. This has nothing to do with Inmates having to work. There asses should be made to pick up trash and clean toilets. This is about big businesses and rich folks sticking it to the middle class. It is about jobs that should go to free Americans. For the people who think they are menial jobs, the next step will be to start training people in prison for more advanced jobs and under pay them. Prison labor is the biggest threat to free labor.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/freelancepimp/ freelancepimp

You know I love you but I don’t knwo how we are going to make this work. I mean we can have our disagreement but I guess the only thing is as long as we don’t go to bed mad. This is not about prisoners as much as it is about not paying a decent wage to unincarcerated Americans.

Look, I am determine to make us work. I am going to go consult Steve Harvey. He knows how to make relationships work.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/koolios2050/ koolios2050

The problem is that one does not HAVE to “do” anything. Take a look at some of the conviction rates and more specifically the wrongful conviction rates. As a matter of fact, take a look at the unwillingness of the judicial system to review a case once it has been carried out especially when a conviction is given. Anybody remember a certain man who was executed recently even AFTER seven of nine witnesses recanted. Reasonable doubt is not enough to stop the prison system nowadays, especially if you are a minority.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/freelancepimp/ freelancepimp

Yeah you are right but that was the first person that came to mind. The black panthers used to also try to tell poor white folk that they were just being screwed by rich white folk.

  • Anonymous

I think some people on here are missing the point of this article. First, prison should be about rehabilitation for a person, not to get cheap labor. Second, that labor should be used on the outside of prison with fair wages. Seems like one step to spur the economy. But like someone pointed out, the “powers that be” know what they are doing.

  • OneManPosse

You are correct, sir. Here is how it goes.(1) They want you to f**k yourself. (2) They want another black person(s) to f**k you. (3) If neither 1 or 2 happens then they just directly f**k you.

Usually 1 or 2 gets the job done in the form of you committing some petty crime and getting in the system or being the victim of black on black crime and they get to sit back and laugh.

If we can eliminate 1 and 2 (and we can) that will go a long way in solving our problem.

  • OneManPosse

Ok, brother man. Keep doing what you’re doing.

The United States Constitution Amendment XIII allows inmates to be slaves: Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

Stay out of jail; thereby mooting the argument.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/germandog21/ germandog21

Brother, nobody is crying that we should be “sweeter” to prisoners. Most deserve to be there. The main issue is “should wall street billionaires be able to get richer from prison labor when we know the criminal justice system is engineered to railroad more blacks and minorities, even though whites are doing the same amount or more crime”? This is especially true in regard to drugs.

Do we want prison labor to continue to be a private industry, mostly for the rich, or is it better for prison profits to help pay for all costs associated with maintaining inmates, compensating victims, increasing the tax base, financing needed programs for youth, or attacking the national debt, etc.

Sure, there can be problems however the money is handled because any money made helps create a system that needs prisoners. It seems healthier that prison profits go for productive uses that would help our society…….not make make the wealthy richer

Good question! I can not speak on it for everyone that does. Relaxation, fun, a need to escape maybe. Perhaps for the same reasons that everyone from those high in politics, corporate giants, down to the low class moonshiners , risking jail for alcohol during the prohibition era.

My issue is weed is much safer than alcohol and especially cigarettes but somehow it is used as a trap for minorities who engage weed no more than whites but suffer the lion’s share of weed arrests.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/soultry-soul/ soultry-soul

    SMDH and LOL!

I completely agree with you on…not pay decent wages to unincarcerated Americans.

  • http://escapingmediocrity.wordpress.com Natassia

Alcohol was used for things other than drinking: cooking, antiseptics, etc. But while it was illegal, why would someone who wants to avoid jail, risk it for some alcohol?

The reasons you listed just don’t make much sense to me. It seems like a steep price to pay for some temporary pleasure. However, a misdemeanor like having a blunt on you probably isn’t going to get you jail time whereas being a dealer will.

Are minorities getting caught more because they are the ones more likely to be dealers and transporters?

What % of the 2 million people in prison are on “bogus charges”? Right after slavery ended, the Mississippi legislature enacted Black Codes which restricted the rights and freedom of movement of the freedmen. The Black Codes enacted in Mississippi and other Southern states virtually re-enslaved the freedmen. In some states any white could arrest any Black. In other states minor officials could arrest Black “vagrants” and “refractory and rebellions Negroes” and force them to work on roads and levees without pay.

“Servants” in South Carolina were required to work from sunrise to sunset, to be quiet and orderly and go to bed at “reasonable hours.” It was a crime in Mississippi for Blacks to own farmland; in South Carolina Blacks had to get a special license to work outside the domestic and farm laborer categories.

    THIS IS MODERN DAY SLAVERY!

This is not an issue that’s just black and white on the surface. It is easy for others to say that those in prisons deserve it and should pay for their crime. Yet could not take the time to check facts and variables to this prison industrial complex.

    1) Please if you believe the slavery was abolished by your President Lincoln, whose grandfather and father are black men, then you have taken in their history and not yours.

    2) if you believe that sharecropping was not slavery then please go to the labor statistics and the economic system thats being used during the antebellum. You will realized that the system is exactly like chattel slavery just a different name.

    3) Now if you have not heard of the Slave Codes and Jim Crow laws. Time to catch up or forever be left behind. Jim Crow was never taken away from the books, it was just changed by name such as Rockefeller drug laws, 3 strikes, driving while black, etc. :ick up the book by Michelle Alexander, The Jim Crow.

    4) With all the policies being put forth to combat the so called economic woes that we are in are policies to permanently disenfranchise us as a people; so we can be the permanent lower/slave class. Look at the system that has been enacted all over Latin Amerikkka, India, Philippine islands, Haiti etc. All black people in those regions have been relegated to slave labor. For example, there was 70% blacks who work for the government both federal and local, and with the breaking down of the unions and lay offs. who do you tink are being targeted?

All in all, the prison industrial complex and the military industrial complex are just two new names for slave labor or slavery. But does not mean we cannot fight and do better to get the best out of us. It just mean now we know the roots of the problem and where it stems. we can then find the solution or suggestion to do better. It all comes down to, are willing to do the work or you just like ranting and raving online so you can get some draws?

    Black 1st! 24/7 365.

I agre with some of your points, but I have to disagree that such prejudice and bigotry does not exist in China or Japan. If anyting it is much overt not covert like out here. I have read so many articles on how blacks are being treated in China and Japan except at times they will phrase you because just like YT folks they want to copy us. Now in Botswana, Tanzania, Barbados and everywhere black folks is at.Racism exist it is just more covert and systematic. In any caribbean islands and countries, the YTs has the control, and you have some mulattos that they swing back and forth on your face to make you calm and non threatening i.e. Jamaica, haiti, Trini, Dominican Rep, etc. The truth is the caste system is very evident and alive all over latin Amerikkka, caribbean, India and other parts of the world where black people resides.

For a so called journalist to even ask,”Big Business Or Slave Labor?”, is redundant and oblivious; and should not be taken seriously. If one study slavery and the United States of Amerikkka, this country was founded as a corporation and it is still one. And for one to look at this multi national companies and the families that owned these companies were all beneficiaries of chattel slavery like New York Life. Now Prison Industrial Complex is a big business and another form of slavery. Therefore, look at how prisons can be build so fast in the last decade.Yet, education is being gutted out. Now look at how the YT supremacy system is working around the prison system. For example, our people are being pushed out of the urban areas and physically transplanted outside the city where the new prisons have been built. look at Harlem and where those populace are going? look at Downtown Los angeles and transplanted to Lancaster and san bernardino. Thats how much power they have and we dont. It is called effeciency in economic terms.

Jewsone= a joke. why do I say that?

Lets break this down to the lazy and degenerates.

    1) Who controls the music industry and media? Jews

    2) who control the Prisons(companies and individuals that own the prisons)? Jews

    3) who controls the banks? Jews

Now, when you have rappers like Lil’ Wayne, Jay-Z and others thats promotes prison experience as the road to manhood and womanhood. The question is, who are paying them to promote such degeneracy? (look above for the answer)

Next, these rappers and entertainers are getting paid how much? $1-6 million for their record or movies etc. on average. Now last year in the state of New York, the prisons racked up 100 million alone. Now take the fee they give rappers and entertainers for promoting these dysfunctional culture. that is a profit of $94 million in one state. now multiply that with 50 for 50 states, and then look at all the prisons all over the worlds even in the coldest part of Europe are filled with blacks. So much are they making off us?

Also, ask the clintons and the bush how much they made off the prisons because they are investors to all the prisons.

Those inmates should be happy that they are making ANY money at all. The rest of the money should go back to the taxpayers who give them free everything. Or maybe they can make a regular salary and have to pay for their food, clothes and shelter like decent human beings.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/smittyboy7/ smittyboy7

I tried telling those dumbass white boys on my job this samething, but the last thing white folks want to do is believe their empire is falling. They keep yapping and dreaming about,it’s going to get better, but in reality America the so called great is on it’s way down and out of power in the world.

Well whites avoid jail time because of skin color, and thats all.

  • http://escapingmediocrity.wordpress.com Natassia

You really think that’s it? How about blacks and Latinos are more likely to have a prior record than whites? And where do Asians stand, I wonder? How much you want to bet they are jailed even less often than whites?

  • http://escapingmediocrity.wordpress.com Natassia

What centuries-old stereotypes would that be, I wonder?

Who cares. Jail is supposed to be unpleasant, same as prison. F those criminal sc** in jail. I hope they all die in there. Work them until they drop. It is amazing how some people forget about why they went to jail or prison in the first place. Remember those victims. Again, F those criminal sc**. F them until they die.

The prison system is a modern day slave system. Many people are jailed for manufactured “crimes”, like traffic violations, such as expired registration, or lack of insurance. Not to mention “crimes” like smoking marijuana. After being jailed, the government owns these poor captives, and does whatever it wants with them.
