After insulting Mexican immigrants in America, grandiloquent billionaire Donald Trump has blasted his way to the top of the list of Republican presidential candidates in a crowded field that includes several high-profile elected officials, reports The Hill.
A new Economist/YouGov poll shows that Trump was the preferred GOP nominee for 15 percent of respondents — 4 points ahead of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul who were tied for second place, the report says.
Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee shared the third spot with 9 percent each.
Besides being the first choice for the majority of likely voters who participated in the poll, Trump was also the primary second choice for those who preferred another candidate as their nominee, the report says.
That’s not the only good news for Trump.
The Washington Post reports that the real estate mogul and reality television star dominated social and regular media reports last week after hurling degrading insults at Mexican immigrants.
He had more than 1.9 million total mentions on social, traditional, and broadcast media from June 30 to July 6, the report says. Meanwhile, Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton received the next highest number of mentions, with less than half that at 448,000.
Trump was mentioned on Twitter about five times as often as Clinton. On TV and online media, the gap was more like two-to-one, the report says.
Can Trump maintain his lead, or is this just a media blip during the dog days of summer before serious campaigning kicks off in the fall? Sound off in the comments.
