Charter and magnet schools represent nine of the top 10 public high schools in the country, according to the new annual U.S. News & World Report analysis.

The 2017 U.S. News Best High Schools National Rankings says charters and magnets represent 60 percent of the top 100 schools, even though together they account for just 16 percent of the 6,000 schools awarded medals in the survey.

U.S. News awards gold, silver or bronze medals to the top 22,000 public high schools throughout the nation. Medals are awarded based on state assessment performance and college readiness, which charter and magnet schools tend to emphasize.

This comes as the alternative public school sector is exploding. The outlet said charter schools have seen a 100 percent increase in student enrollment since the 2007 – 2008 school year.

At the same time, a wave of studies on charter schools question their effectiveness. Charter schools in the District of Columbia are now under a microscope after a U.S. Department of Education study found that many students in the city’s D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program regressed academically.
