New York City will close its first jail on Rikers Island this summer as part of a 10-year plan to shut down the infamous and violence-plagued jail complex.

The renaming recognizes the injustice to Browder and his role in shedding light on prison abuse of minors.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Friday that the dilapidated and notorious Rikers Island jail complex will close, with the process taking up to 10 years.

President Obama commuted the prison sentences of 79 inmates on Tuesday, upholding his pledge to release non-violent and low-level, drug offenders, The Hill reports.
