obama immigration, dream actPresident Barack Obama’s speech delivered earlier today from the White House Rose Garden focused heavily on U.S. immigration policy – a dicey topic for the President in an election year where people of color count as a critical part of votes needed for his reelection.

Obama gamely spoke to the press gathered in the garden to declare a measure that will effectively end the deportation of several thousand young illegal immigrants who were brought to American shores by their parents.

Despite right-wing Republican and conservative opposition to this step, which the President carefully said was not amnesty or immunity, criticism of the White House’s decision displays insensitivity towards young Hispanics and other immigrant children of color who had no control of their decision to come to America. According to Obama and the Department of Homeland Security, the measure is simply temporary with hopes that Congress will follow suit and pass more permanent legislation, such as the halted DREAM Act that would grant citizenship to many immigrants who are seeking legitimacy.

From the speech:

Effective immediately, the Department of Homeland Security is taking steps to lift the shadow of deportation from these young people. Over the next few months, eligible individuals who do not present a risk to national security or public safety will be able to request temporary relief from deportation proceedings and apply for work authorization.

Republicans Party officials accused the White House of playing election year politics by pandering to the Hispanic vote with this measure, and a conservative reporter’s outburst solidified the disrespect Obama has endured since he’s taken office. Neil Munro of The Daily Caller, a conservative publication owned by Tucker Carlson, stepped out of bounds during the news conference.

(Munro claimed he thought the President was done)

After being shut down, Munro continued to overstep his bounds with questions, to which Obama acknowledged by saying, “it’s the right thing to do.”

Republican and conservative opposition remains baffling, considering Hispanic Republican Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla) introduced a similar version of the DREAM Act and is set to announce it next week. In essence, Republicans may feel trumped by Obama’s measure and are now scrambling for ways to secure the precious Hispanic voting bloc. But critics fail to recognize very key points of the measure.

Obama and Homeland Security are not going to reward criminals and immigrants who pose a threat to the country. Instead, this simply ensures that those immigrants who came here illegal by way of their parents and elder guardians have an opportunity to become part of the world’s greatest democracy. Imagine coming to an unknown country, fleeing doom and despair in order to obtain freedom as a child. The cruelty in sending children back to uncertain conditions should be apparent to anyone with any manner of compassion.

In time, Congress will hopefully recognize the folly in not moving ahead with the DREAM Act and support humanity instead of lustily chasing simple political maneuvers.
